W Cavaliers 116 Wizards 94 Preseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Cavaliers @ Wizards - Preseason

preaseason means nothing, but man was it a good feeling to have scoring off the bench. and besides washington scoring 41 in the first quarter in the remaining three periods they never got under 18.

Basketball is finally back

Great game by the Cavaliers after a shakey defensive start. Every player who stepped on the court did not harm their chances one bit. Jackson and Martynas were nice surprises off the bench. Gooden and Snow showed why they should start, whilst Marshall and Jones gave us a great spark. LeBron and Hughes did their thing, as did Z. Sasha worked hard and come away with some nice plays. Henderson showed why he was an astute signing by Ferry. Wilks and Keleena are in for a mighty battle for the final roster spot.

Good stuff. I loved the bench production from Marty, Luke and Henderson. We know Lebron, Larry, Z and Gooden can produce, it was good to see the other guys doing there thing.

88 - 76 though three quarters. Amazing to see us come out of halftime and actually play some basketball. Not really a bad player out there.

Hopefully we can find some more time for Martynas in the 4th. Look for the trialist guys to get some time in the game tomorrow, being a back to back.
I can't believe I just read this! :)

I think this game is a microcosm for the whole season. We will struggle to gel and find eachother a bit at first our defense will come later as opposed to sooner. I liked how we didn't have to play LeBron Larry and Z to erase the deficit.

Havin Jackson drop 12 off the bench is a breath of fresh air, I don't think we had a guy drop 12 off the bench did we? Yeah probably but if he can get 8 points or so off the bench that is still pretty decent. Playing behind LeBron and Larry from basically a rookie what more can we ask?

I think Marty made a case to come up next year instead of 2 years. Z isn't the most physical fellow out there and Marty has added 15 lbs since being drafted by us. He has a good shot he has a long body for blocking, basically he is Zydrunas just a little younger then we got him and more raw. I was impressed by Wilks and Ekezie, and I'm glad Buike' got 6 points in some action :) He has continued to impress on practice at the offensive end because he brings it defensively every time. God this is so fun talkin about CAVS games!

Yeah last year we were lucky if the entire bench could muster up 12pts. Also talk about your production... Cavs only played 237minutes compared to the Wizards 240mins. and we still beat them. How does that happen?!?

Good win...thanks for the recap Karma....been watching football and baseball. Was nice to read the ebb and flow of the game. :chuckles:

What did you listen to it on?

WTAM I think was covering it, with good ol' Mr. Tait. I'm glad we played well at the end, but it is kind of hard to discuss a game you couldn't see  Like someone previously mentioned how can you put stupid poker re-runs over Cavaliers preseason? I'd love to see guys battling it out for roster spots during games, then we can judge for ourself who should have gotten the spot over who actually did. Especially if you are pulling for a player like me Kelenna and want to see him playing :( Well I'm glad to see Mike Brown is more verbal during games then Silas or Malone. Silas kinda just glared at people and Malone just sat there. Hopefully he can keep us motivated and keep our heads in the game. This brand of nonstop coaching could only benefit us, especially Drew who has ADD during games lol. I can't wait for the next game so much to talk about. Marty the bench the final roster spots the new players the new coach AND THE KING! :king:

Cavs beat Wiz In Preseason Debut

Cleveland 116
Washington 94

AP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- LeBron James and Drew Gooden scored 16 points each to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 116-94 victory over the Washington Wizards in their preseason opener Monday night.

Reserve forward Awvee Storey had 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Wizards. He shot 6-for-7 from the field in 22 minutes.

Antawn Jamison and Antonio Daniels scored 13 points apiece, and Gilbert Arenas added 12 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes for Washington.

Gooden also grabbed eight rebounds for the Cavaliers, who got eight points and six rebounds from offseason acquisition Donyell Marshall. Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 10 points, and Larry Hughes added nine points, three rebounds and three assists against his former team.

James was 7-for-11 from the field in 25 minutes, as the Cavaliers shot 50.7 percent in coach Mike Brown's debut. The Wizards shot 43.2 percent and committed 25 turnovers to Cleveland's 18.

Reserve guard Damon Jones scored five points as the Cavaliers took control with an 11-0 run late in the third quarter.

The Wizards led by as many as 13 points before ending the first quarter with a 41-30 edge. Cleveland pulled even on a tip-in by Gooden late in the first half.

Washington led 59-58 at halftime.

Wizards forward Caron Butler missed the game with a groin injury.

Luke had a good game going 4-8 for 12 points with 2 Ast and 2 Stl.

Edit: Didnt realize we had a Game Thread portion of the website. My bad. :(

I will have pics up tommorow, great game though/

Sounds like an awesome game. I don't mind the first quarter at all: as long as we make the adjustments ( ) in the game afterwards, that's whats important... something Silas never really accomplished.

Gooden is doing what he should be doing... hope he can keep it up. Not forcing or demanding the ball, 8 rebounds is impressive.

Marshall, I'm fairly impressed with. He had to play center a bit, which he probably doesn't like, but he can use it to his advantage in the future. I liked his toughness as well, leading the team in blocks with 2.

Henderson is a big surprise to me as well. But remember, it was Tractor, not Diop, that came off the bench first to back up Z. Now we have someone that can consistently produce at that position.

Z/LeBron doing what they should.. except for the combined 2 rebounds... that will change I suppose. I'm happy to see the 0 attempted 3 pointers by LeBron.

I'm not going to break the bank for Ekezie just yet, he's played 1 game. I'm sure Brown will give Bateer and Hamilton similar minutes in the next few games.

And Marty... very interesting. His hard work is paying off, and we might even see him this year if he does the right things: focus on defense and add a bit more toughness to decrease injury proneness, and wait for his offense to come to him, because that's where his strength is.

Snow starting is OK, but aside from that 15-footer, he only attempted 1 more shot. But the 5 pts, 5 assists, I'll take any night if D.Jones can come off the bench to rain 2-3 threes.

Luke/Sasha was the most interesting matchup. If things continue like this, then I can see Sasha, with his 5 boards and defense, to backup LeBron at the SF, while Luke, with his superior shooting and all around game, to backup Hughes for a bit more minutes.

Damn, I'm excited... I can't wait to actually see these boys play!!!

Good to see Coach Brown make some adjustments in game. This seemed beyond Silas, and results spoke for themselves. Early days.....

Adjustments is the key word. I listened to a little bit of the second quarter last night, but I was too busy to pay close attention. Thanks everyone for the constant updates.

Luke and Sasha, as most have predicted, are going to be the "X-factors" on this team.

On top of the adjustments made and the fast start to the second half (did we EVER do that last season?), I am really excited about the scoring we have coming off the bench. I know that it's only preseason and only one game, but hopefully, this is a sign of things to come.

I'm sure I'm repeating alot here.
Excellent start to the pre-season. I'm sure Brown loved the 3 straight quarters of solid D holding the Wiz under 20 pts. Our offense was about as consistent as you can get(30/28/30/28) with every player who played scoring. Balanced scoring with 7 players scoring 8 or more. Really liked Sasha and Luke getting 20 min each playing mostly together.....hopefully this is a sign of things to come. Luke shot great, Sasha played solid with 5 boards and 3 assists....his shot will eventually fall. The depth of our team will be a real luxury not seen in a long time in Cleveland. Hopefully we will see many blowouts this year so we can keep Lebron, Larry and Z's minutes down. Our second unit is talented AND HUNGRY....unlike Diop who was just hungry.
Can't say enough about the D. Brown will be thrilled with us forcing 25 TO's....the 1st Q will be a different toned discussion.
Overall, great first game. Can't wait for tonight!

Rusy, but effective

WASHINGTON -- Cavaliers coach Mike Brown has preached about his team's defense since the day he was hired.

When the Wizards blew the Cavaliers off the court in the first quarter of last night's preseason opener -- to the tune of 41 points -- it had to shake the very fiber of his being.

But the Cavaliers responded after the putrid opening quarter to rout the Wizards, 116-94, at the MCI Center.

Washington went on a 15-0 run in the first quarter, largely because the Cavaliers couldn't stop their transition game.

The Cavaliers defense stiffened after the opening quarter and held the Wizards to just 53 points and 35-percent shooting in the final three quarters.

''It wasn't our defense,'' Cavaliers forward LeBron James said. ''We were turning the ball over. We had seven turnovers in the first quarter, and they had 17 fastbreak points off our turnovers. After that, you saw what we've been working on in two-a-days. It was great to see.''

If they hadn't made a stark turnaround, Brown would have blown a gasket.

''The biggest thing we've been preaching the whole training camp is defense,'' he said. ''If we defend, we'll be able to win on the road, like we did here tonight. In the first half, they jumped on us with the press. We just implemented our press break in today. Our guys responded well after we settled down. It turned into a rat race there for a while. They started to trust the system, trust their teammates, communicate and help one another.''

Forward Drew Gooden had 16 points and eight rebounds, both game highs. James matched Gooden's point total and added four steals and three assists.

Brown had to be happy with the play of backup center Alan Henderson, who had seven points and four rebounds, and Luke Jackson, who banged in 12 points, including two 3-pointers.

''I look at this team like I looked at Dallas last year,'' Henderson said. ''They had a lot of guys who could do a lot of things. What I bring to the table is defense and rebounding. That's what I do.''

Cavaliers shooting guard Larry Hughes, making his first return to the MCI Center since signing with Cleveland as a free agent, added nine points and three assists. He was booed when he was introduced and just about every time he touched the ball.

''That's what fans do,'' he said. ''They support their team. It wasn't so much as they were booing me as a basketball player. It was more that I played here last year and they wanted me to come back.''

Brown said he loves the addition of Hughes.

''We weren't thinking Michael Redd,'' he said. ''We were thinking Larry Hughes. I went to visit him at home. Forget him as a basketball player. He's a tremendous person.''

And not a bad basketball player, either.

The Wizards averted possible disaster with 8.5 seconds left in the third quarter. On a strong drive to the basket, guard Antonio Daniels was blasted by Cavaliers forward Donyell Marshall. Marshall was assessed a flagrant foul, and Daniels lay motionless for several seconds. He got up and shot his free throws. He'll need an ice pack today.

Daniels, who grew up in Columbus and attended Bowling Green State University, had 13 points and two assists in his first game with the Wizards. He was wooed by the Cavaliers in the offseason before signing with Washington.
