So Long, James Jones

Re: Welcome James Jones

I would have to think the fact that Jones and Miller decided to come here would only increase the chances that Allen will eventually decide to join.

Sounds like he's close...

Re: Welcome James Jones

This is your Earl Clark Move That Isn't Really a Move of The Year. Won't get off the bench and if he does he's probably not helping the team. He's here just cause.

Earl Clark comparisons should be limited to horrible players or to show contrast between good and horrible players. Jones isn't horrible; he's actually a solid contributor off the bench. Earl Clark has been a dumpster fire on every team he's ever played for. We should be thankful we won't have to watch Clark bog down the team for a quarter of each game next season.

It's a non-move that will have zero impact at all. We could have signed basically anyone to this slot and gotten the same level of production or better. He'll be lucky to play 10 minutes a night.

I disagree with the bold. Jones at least offers one elite skill: three point shooting. He's not going to play big minutes, obviously, but he has the ability to step on the floor and knock it down from three at an elite clip (40.3% for his career). I do agree that he won't play much, but having bench guys who can do at least one thing really well is always helpful.

You also compared Jones to Clark, while also suggesting, "(Jones)Won't get off the bench and if he does he's probably not helping the team." That part is patently false. While I agree that his minutes will limit his impact (playing behind LeBron), his per minute production is still light years better than Earl Clark's. Jones also gives the Cavs an extra 3P shooter to surround LeBron with at the end of close games, but considering your commentary, I'm sure you'd be just as happy with Earl Clark.

Trying not to overanalyze this signing...If and when Allen signs, he is pretty much redundant. Play ten minutes a night? That'd be 800 minutes for the year, and I can't believe he will come close to that. His value lies in the fact he can sit on the bench for a week, two weeks, even longer, then come into a game cold and immediately hit 3 pointers at a remarkable rate. He almost literally does nothing else of basketball value. (I understand he is a consummate professional and a good teammate.)

Would have preferred using his roster spot on a big man. I mean, I know the Cavs will be adding another big by some means, but I think even in addition to this another big would have brought more value. But again, I'm not going to overanalyze.

Re: Welcome James Jones

James Jones isn't very good, but aside from his frame he is in no way similar to Clark. Very low mistake player...Clark is just the opposite.

Re: Welcome James Jones

Jones is going to be a situational player specifically a guy Lebron will trust to hit a 3 under duress. Always useful to have a gyy like him in the playoffs.

One can shoot; the other cannot. Pretty simple contrast.

While Jones won't get many minutes, putting together a strong bench is a byproduct of several solid moves. If every bench player has at least one elite skill, the chances are that's probably going to be a quality bench. Likewise, if every bench player plays like Earl Clark, the opposite is true.

Re: Welcome James Jones

I feel like James Jones is going to win a game for us this year on a last-second three, and we'll be tracing back to this thread at some point.

Clark was... Just be happy we have James Jones instead.

Re: Welcome James Jones

Clark was signed as starting level player. Our fault but still. Jones is signed to ride the pine. Way different reason for him to be on our team. We have 3 major players on the outside, that will take most of the minutes, two good substitutes and limited minutes. We need practice and locker room presence, this is where I see value in Jones and eventually Allen.

Precisely this.. and the importance here cannot be understated.

What James is doing is smart. He is replacing the locker room; packing it with as many of his actual friends as he can. Jones is a personal friend of James, as is Ray Allen, Mike Miller, and Anderson Varejao. Tristan Thompson looks up to LBJ highly and is represented by James best friend. That's almost half the active roster aligned towards a single player.

Unlike last year, this will be a very tight nit group.

Now, that doesn't ensure success; but I highly doubt those veteran players will tolerate, even for a moment, in-fighting among the rookie players (Irving/Waiters/Thompson). There will be order and stability here, and if anyone gets out of line, they will likely be put on full blast from James' bully pulpit.
