Welcome Shawn Marion #31

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
0 is the ugliest number in sports and shouldn't be allowed.

Don't get me started on 00 which doesn't even make logical sense.

I think we'll likely see Lebron and Love get about 36 minutes a game, and we will see Mike Miller & Tristan Thompson get regular minutes as forwards. If that's the case, then there probably won't be 24 minutes available for Marion unless he gets ahead of both Mike Miller and Tristan Thompson in the rotation or there is an injury.

I disagree. Marion and Miller will allow LBJ to reduce his minutes to the 30 min range a game.

That should be the goal with him during the reg season. It's time to start thinking about extending his prime.

I agree that it would be great to reduce Lebron's minutes, but Charles Barkley is so fond of saying, "Father Time is undefeated" and Marion and Miller's ages add up to 70. Come playoffs, that will be 72. I'm setting my expectations low. If the team can get 2000 regular season minutes between the two of them, that would be great. I think it would take a lot of luck to get 4000 minutes from the pair. Injuries and age take their toll. And while I know this is unfair to Shawn Marion, the last 36 year old free agent that the team signed was David Wesley. Sometimes the wheels come off at that age.

And something just seems wrong with the idea that the team might be counting on a pair of guys in their mid 30's reduce Lebron's minutes. It doesn't seem to be the right way to do things. How much gas will Marion and Miller have in the spring if they play that much? What growth with young talent have if they never see the floor? I'd be much happier if the team can find a way to get 1000 minutes for a guy like Joe Harris and to let Tristan play his usual indestructible 2500. The young guys might be better in the spring for the extra minutes, while extra minutes for Marion and Miller probably won't have the same effect.

I feel like LeBron might eventually get a little less. I can see Ky and Love eating a bulk of minutes together, though.

But then again, knowing LeBron's competitive nature, is he really going to be satisfied with 30 minutes a game? This is a dude who plays with flames in his corneas each night. I feel like he'll want to be on the court as much as possible, especially in tight games.

I do feel like they should all be limiting their minutes if a first half gives us a blowout lead in certain games, though.

Yes, that's what I think. Like I said, James will play at least 34-36 minutes, imo.

Marion is gonna be so fucking legit off the bench, oh man.

Do some of you guys really think LeBron will want to play 30 minutes? LeBron is not only gunning to win a 3rd ring, but last year, he was a bit bitter that he didn't won the MVP. He knows that he's the favorite to win it and has the best storyline, and playing 30 minutes isn't going to cut it. LeBron will definitely play 35+ minutes.

I disagree. Being healthy and being fresh is more important then a MVP?

Last year Marion logged 2400 minutes (his most since 2008-09) and Miller 1700 minutes (his most since 2009-10). I don't think anyone is suggesting the two will combine for 4000 minutes this year. I think the idea that LeBron, who hasn't averaged less than 37 minutes per game his entire career, plays only 30 mpg this year is not realistic. If they can keep him at 35-36 that would be great.

I think a case can be made the team should use some bench player minutes to develop younger players (aside from Thompson and Delly, who will both obviously get a lot of minutes), as San Antonio and even OKC have done. Several voices -- Mark Deeks and David Thorpe among them -- have recently cautioned that the Cavs, by signing older vets, are losing the chance to develop a younger bench that might be more sustainable. But that approach only makes sense if your bench guys can actually play. It remains to be seen what future Joe Harris has in the league. I'm certainly fine with him getting 1000 minutes this year if he shows he deserves them, but I don't think you can count on that at all. I personally am even less confident about Dwight Powell's prospects.

The Cavs have not been particularly good in recent years at drafting or signing/trading for young talent and/or identifying a role that plays to their strengths so they can succeed and develop. Most of the young, unestablished free agents they have signed have not worked out. A couple of their young players have gone on to succeed elsewhere (most notably Danny Green), while many more have failed to achieve anything in the NBA (Samardo Samuels, Semih Erden, Manny Harris, etc. etc.).

In fact, until he convinces me otherwise, I am still skeptical of David Griffin's ability to identify and develop a supporting cast for the Big 3. Given that skepticism, I am totally in favor of bringing in Miller, Marion, and even James Jones, and would also be on board with adding Allen. Their proven track records outweigh the risk that they will break down this year (and it is only a one year commitment for each, except for Miller who got two years). I guess at the end of the day I think Riley did a pretty good job putting together the Miami teams (with the partial exception of the last season when he was forced to make budget cuts), and to the extent that the Cavs are following that model I can't complain too much.

I never said it wasn't more important, but that doesn't mean that LeBron is going to want to play 30 minutes while he see Durant, Kobe, Melo playing 35+ minutes and padding their stats. He has an ego, and it was obvious to me last year that it bothered him a bit that Durant had the freedom to averaged as many FGA as he wanted, while LeBron had to shared the ball a bit more. LeBron is a competitor and he knows how to conserve his energy well, but he'll play more than 30+ minutes. The guy will be one of the anchors on the defensive end in the starting lineup, and his presence on the court on the defensive end will make a significant difference, and Blatt knows it too. Mark my words, LeBron will play more than 30 minutes in the reg.season.

Marion is in the Manila area holding a basketball and anti bullying clinic. Think he will sign when he gets back. Interesting the Manila paper showed a picture of him and said he was in a heat uniform and would be playing for the heat next year. Think the paper is a little behind the times. And looked like a Cavs uniform to me.

He's in Manila and will soon return to the U.S. to sign with the Cavs.

Marion, who will finalize the agreement with his signature upon returning to the United States, says he chose Cleveland because "I was looking at the teams and see who I think was the best fit to make a real run at a championship."

But more than that, Marion wanted to be close to the biggest priority in his life today as he looks to attain a second NBA title.

"The distance between me and my son. I wanted to make sure I was close to my son where we weren't too far away and I can either drive or fly," according to the soon-to-be-Cavalier, alluding to the proximity of Cleveland and Chicago, where his son resides, which is four and a half hours away by car.

"I just wanted to make sure that he's involved. I got a new-born son. So, you know, he's my priority right now."

"He's more a priority than I am."

Of course, playing with arguably the most loaded team in the NBA - at least on paper - helps make that decision easier as well.

"I'm excited. I think it's going to be fun. It speaks for itself. I wanna try to add to my legacy. I think we have a good chance of winning a championship."
