Welcome Shawn Marion #31

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Haywood and Jones aren't good enough to play anymore either. It's garbage time. He still won't put him in. There has got to be more going on there.

We are saving him for the playoffs. /green

Just a wild guess, but I'm wondering if Marion has balked at playing in garbage time.

Kind of a "I'd rather sit the entire game then go in during a blowout" type situation.

I don't have any complaints about Marion being benched, because he has not produced that much in months. But I'm not happy that he has struggled so much. The Cavs would be much better and that much deeper if he was able to make more substantial contributions. It's pretty disappointing to date, especially remembering some games where he made an impact, especially on defense. I don't think he has really been the same since shortly before he announced his retirement.

I seen that to as he knows he is a step late but the fire in him wants to be out there. I am pleased with his efforts here and he did his job. That is all we can ask and yeah the guy is done.

Maybe Marion will ask for a buyout?

Marion's making the minimum. His salary was guaranteed on January 10th. There's no buyout, he's the first guy to go if a halfway decent PG gets bought out.

Marion has looked to be on old age time. Little injuries are reoccurring which isn't surprising

Saving him for the ECF, etc

Don't play a winner until you really need him

I like Marion. I hope we don't buy him out. Plus we could use his defense for the playoffs. Just for the shits and giggles, imagine an all-defense lineup of:

Shump
Marion
Lebron
Perkins
Mozgov

Mike Brown would be salivating at the thought of it.

Jason Lloyd had a tidbit in his mailbag column:

Why doesn’t Shawn Marion play anymore? Is he hurt or just out of the rotation? @5bigal

Why is Shawn Marion basically out of the rotation? @szeremdf

Marion has been battling a lingering left hip injury that has affected him off and on for a couple of months. If this were the postseason he could play through it, but he’s trying to rest it now so he’s ready for April. I’ll have more on Marion on Ohio.com before Sunday’s game against the New York Knicks.

Some more nuggets in that column, and I encourage you to read it:

I may have missed it, but I don't think I had heard of this minor, but lingering, injury till now. Probably the sort of thing aging veterans routinely have to deal with, and wasn't something that was generally known.

I'm probably in the minority on Marion, but I have felt he has been fine and has generally performed his role. He started off strong on the corner 3, and since has fallen off dramatically, and that has been disappointing because it hurt offensive spacing. But generally you don't expect any offense from him. Earlier in the year when he was starting at SG, back when the team effectively didn't have a starting caliber shooting guard, I think people were impressed he was able to do as well as he did defensively on the perimeter.

He also doesn't do bad things -- he doesn't turn it over and he doesn't shoot if he doesn't have a good shot (he has taken exactly zero long 2's all year per basketballreference.com). He still rebounds and he has a knack for getting his hand on the ball and blocking shots.

I mean, I'm not complaining about Blatt playing Shump and/or JR as the backup at SF -- that's clearly been a benefit to the offense -- but I think Marion still has his uses, though it would be a help if he could show he can hit the corner 3 at a 35% clip again.

IOW- suck it, haters. He'll be in the rotation leading up to the playoffs.

That's good to know on Marion.... I've been a little surprised he hasn't been playing. The Bulls game in particular was surprising as I think the more natural thing to do would've been to start him at the 4 in place of Love and play TT increased minutes off the bench. Less disruption to the rotation then. Marion is much more suited to go up against bigs than James Jones was.

I suspected he might be injured and I'm glad the media got around to asking about it. LeBron must not have posted anything on Twitter for them to corner him about so they had to ask worthless questions like why a guy that was in the rotation has been racking up DNP-CDs. I'm glad Lloyd asked because if Kevin Love might make an Instragram post about In-N-Out burger this afternoon, it may be another week before the team gets any questions about basketball from Haynes, Lloyd or any of the other TMZ hacks covering the team.

I hope he gets healthy for the playoffs because his defensive versatility can still be very valuable in certain matchups and I like his 3/4 versatility against run and gun teams.

Ideally, the playoff rotation is a core of 7 guys:

Kyrie, Smith, LeBron, Love, Mozgov, Shumpert, TT

with the following guys getting into the 8/9 man rotation depending on matchups and game situations but I doubt any of them play EVERY game come playoff time:

Marion, Delly, Perk

and maybe in a pinch guys like Miller or Jones make an appearance.

Marion is still a vet and he will find a way to make some sort of impact in the playoffs. Good guy to throw out there even if it is simply to give someone like Korver a different look.

Same with Miller. I really think those guys will have some big moments or make a crucial play or two. Experience does matter in situations like that.

I do like that we have the option to rest Marion as much as he needs in order to be effective again. He has to be hurt, no way he fell off a fucking cliff that hard
