Welcome Shawn Marion #31

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I like the Shawn Marion signing, but I don't think it really moves the needle that much for the team.

Yes, he was a very good player for quite a long time. Yes, he is probably a better value than a 40 year old Ray Allen at vet minimum salary.

However the Cavs are not getting the 2005 or 2010 Shawn Marion. They are not even getting the 2013 Shawn Marion. They are getting the 2015 Shawn Marion. The 2015 might be a bit better than a minimum salary player, but not a lot better. He's mainly a jump shooter these days. When he was on the court last season, the Mavs offense suffered, the rebounding suffered, the defense really suffered. There's s reason why Dallas wasn't fighting to keep him.

Marion strikes me more as strategic depth signing. He can fill in at multiple positions. He'll be great to have around if there's an injury or a trade. He's going to be a lot better than a d-league call up. I'm not sure he'll get higher than the 8th guy in the rotation on most nights.

Here's where I think you could be wrong. In an offense with insane spacing, Marion's nose for the ball, and sense of where rebounds are going, where passing lanes will be, where to fill in space..... he's a veteran. If anything, this team has lacked veterans, severely.

Sure his athletic gifts aren't what they used to be, but he's a ballplayer, there's a reason he's stayed around this long and continued to contribute somehow to get himself playing time and all these additional contracts.

In context, you need one heady veteran play per game, and if that one big play gets you into the finals, or contributes to it (no matter how big or small) then the signing is worth it.

If he takes minutes off LeBron, fills the lanes, snags rebounds, makes hockey assists, hits an open jumper.... He's heady enough to where he can impact the game, even with his athleticism declining. He's smart, and he's capable of playing the way our coach demands.

Maybe not flashy, but they might as well call him the workbench. Without him, shit's just not getting done the way it could be.

Talent or experience?

Experience. We've got our whole foundation in place, now it's time to buy a nice workbench, a nice stable piece that helps glue a lot of our loose ends together with experience and knowledge of the game.

Great signing, even if it does not come off as the flashiest move. In time, you'll come to appreciate this signing.

Yet he had a major impact on the Mavericks success.

Shawn Marion had a shoulder injury . once he took off some time and return to play his production shot back up.

He was abysmall in the mavericks 4 losses and the team was barely an 8th seed going int ot the playoffs.

MArion averaged 30 minutes a game. he is done with that. I believe Marion has another 2 to three years in him if he chooses to continue to play off the bench.

if you watched Dallas at all last year you realize Marion has plenty left in the tank.. he still has length and excellent athleticism for his age.. shot 36% from 3 and still finished great at the rim and out in transition.. still played solid Def.. even guarded bigger SG's like JJ,Kobe, and DeRozan just to name a few.. this is a monster get for the Cavs... he is the biggest FA signing other than LeBron by far.. exactly what we need.. he also played very well vs SA last year and is a guy whom can guard Durant if that is whom we may have to beat eventually to win it all

I really can't get over the unlikelihood of all this. The euphoria is so real right now.

I mean first Kyrie resigns, then the King comes home, then Love completes Cleveland's big 3, then one of the most exciting players in his prime and one of those "must have" fantasy players growing up signs on, and then potentially the greatest 3 point shooter of all time might also sign.

TO CLEVELAND.

Let me say that again.. TO THE CITY OF CLEVELAND. C-L-E-V-E-L-A-N-D.

Never in my wildest dreams could I dare to imagine a scenario even mildly similar to this. It's absurdly perfect.

Given the influx of caliber players, I'd say my credit card is getting a workout this season. Even if it's for a brief moment, these are players I'd have to "custom retrofit" their names on the back of a Cleveland jersey if I wanted that in the past.

Now I can just buy the actual things. To think in 4 years, I could go from buying a Mo Williams jersey to all-out spending on 5 players in order to retain the memory and prestige surrounding this team.

It's going to be a hell of a lot of fun this season, ladies and gentleman. A hell of a lot.

He'll be a great target for our trio of passing all-stars. You need a guy that doesn't need the ball to be effective, that can punish defenses that pay too much attention to your stars, and Marion can do that. He's not just a spot up guy, he can make cuts to the basket and find open spaces in the half court, as well as get out on the fast break. His defense will be very important, not that he's a stopper but he's solid and will give the effort. He's about as good as you can expect a role player to be.

In 1970-71 the Bucks acquired an old Oscar Robertson to pair with young Kareem Jabbar. Robertson was well past his prime. His per game points, rebounds, and assists were almost career lows that season. Yet, the Bucks dominated and won the title. Oscar provided exactly what was needed. The Bucks might not have won without him.

Now I don't mean to compare Marion with Oscar Robertson. Marion won't even start on this team. But if he can provide solid defense, and be able to reduce Lebrons minutes, he will be extremely valuable. He makes our practice sessions more competitive than some games will be.

The opposition will truly face 48 minutes of hell.

Getting The Matrix is huge for the Cavs, huge. And count me in as another who thinks this is the 2nd most important signing this year other then LeBron. If we don't get a legit rim protector this year Marion is going to be on the court at the end of close games in a small ball lineup and do the dirty work on defense and hit a 3 every so often; I have no doubt he will get the LeBron rest treatment as well during the regular season minutes-wise.

What a ridiculous offseason. If they can somehow get Mozgov for the Utah pieces and a 2nd, I'm going to start thinking voodoo is involved.

I loved that Bucks team, it was the first one I ever followed as a kid as the Cavs came into being. Jabbar was Jabbar that year but Oscar was the steadying hand on that team that could still do everything on the court , but had Jabbar do the heavy lifting in the regular season. Oscar was a beast on that playoff run when it was the big-time. He played on a mediocre team most of his career but finally won a ring w/ Milwaukee.

Really?? You have Love @ PF and Lebron @ SF. I hope he's part of a trade to bring us a center.

Thompson isn't going to be moved. That's LeBron's guy.

Most likely, if we don't use the contracts we got from Utah, we would probably use those and Haywood's contract in trade for a center.

LeBron wouldn't like it if we traded his guy. Also, you need a back up to Love.

TT will be a great energy guy off the bench.

I hope that if Cleveland wins a championship then for one day they lift all rules for its citizens kinda like purge - do what you want (except murder and loot) please please dear god - a championship

Starting Player on an NBA championship team.

the guy would of averaged a duble double for his career if he wasnt injured and sat out a year during his all star run. looks like a viable candidate down the road

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, because to me Marion still doesn't look like like a viable candidate down the road. Even if he wins a couple rings with us I don't see him having much of a case, and I've always been a big fan of Marion. I posted about him a couple months ago that despite not having a dangerous jump shot he was still one of the best small forwards in the NBA for the better part of a decade in the Wiggins thread. There's a limit on who we should label definite Hall-of-Famers though, and calling Marion a shoo in is hyperbole. That's not even the worst from tonight though, did someone really bring up Oscar Robertson in this thread? Good times!

I feel the need to say I'm not trying to shit on Marion, he was a great player that was one of the best 15 players in the NBA for a couple years in Phoenix. That doesn't make him a shoo in though, guys like Jermaine O'Neal and Michael Redd had similar peaks and aren't considered Hall-of-Famers by any stretch. It's about sustainability and overall impact, and looking at his full career I just don't see HOFer with the Matrix.

Good way to put it. When we sub in our bench is that really what teams want against their backups? They got Delly pissing off whoever your backup PG is, we got Dion driving on whatever backup SG they have. Then we have Marion and miller switching in and out offense defense, both have decent shots so you can't ignore either. Only weakness is TT and whatever center we have unless it's Okafor. I don't see a bench that can handle ours right now

No, actually Jabbar was Alcindor that year. :chuckles:
