My thinking is that if 'Melo goes there, it will be because LBJ urged the Lakers to sign him, and everyone would know that. Then, when 'Melo goes there and has the effect of a giant fart lingering over and around the Staples Center, it will reflect badly on LBJ, and make it a less desirable destination for free agents because it'll look like LBJ is the "real" GM.
