What's the Best Game You've Played Recently?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You'd have more time if you didn't spend all day on here writing essays. :chuckles:

I have more time than I need for games. I only play occasionally at this point, mostly because nothing has replay value. I own/have owned about 16 or so games for ps4 so far. Beaten every one, but here I am back on ps3 playing bo2 literally as I type this

I was replying to gouri.

I've recently replayed (casually) the following:

1) Fallout 3 (didn't finish, no time)
2) Planescape Torment (didn't finish, no time)
3) Xenogears (didn't finish, no time)
4) KOTOR I (finished)
5) KOTOR II (finished)

Best of them all? Xenogears, by far...

In order?

1) Xenogears
...way further down
2) KOTOR I
3) Torment
4) Fallout 3
5) KOTOR II

If i wanted to play xenogears, how should i do so? It looks like i can download and play it on my ps3, any reason to avoid that? Also would you similarly recommend the 3 xenosaga games for ps2 (just looked this up on wiki)?

I've heard great things about this series and its one of the few acclaimed RPGs that i haven't tried, just not sure what the best way to get into them is.

Edit: Also, xenoblade chronicles for wii?

I'm on another TF2 kick, and given my limited time for gaming it's the only thing I've played (aside from the two-hour most recent ep of Walking Dead) in the past week or so. I really do want to continue on with Divinity: Original Sin, though. That game is almost daunting when it first opens up, which is why I've been hesitant to go back to it. I feel like simply playing it for an hour at a time isn't enough. :chuckles:

Xenosaga games for the PS2 are horrendous. Battle system is jacked, storyline is stupid. Don't waste the money on the 3 of them. Don't even waste emulating them.

Xenogears better than Fallout 3, KOTOR, and Planescape.

Da fuq? :chuckles:

Dark Souls 2 is where it's at. Not for the weak though. You have to actually be good at games to have a chance at beating it. Dark Souls 1 & 2 are easily my 2 favorite games outside of shooters. Everything about them is amazing.

Have you actually played it, or...??

Because I've played every game on the list and know them back and forth better than most. Xenogears is by far the best game up there. The storyline is unbelievably good; the best in any RPG I've ever played, including Torment. The battle engine is fun for a PS1-era game, and mech combat is pretty cool with some challenging (puzzle-like) bosses (like Ramsus, Miang, etc).

Xenogears is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made. The only reason people don't think it is the best RPG is because it lost the Final Fantasy name. It was slated to be Final Fantasy VII, and the game that was VII was supposed to be VIII, but XG's storyline was considered far too controversial and it was put under it's own title. Had it been an FF game, more people would've been exposed to it, it surely would've seen the second disc get completed, and it would've surely been the best FF to date.

Yes FFVII, and FFX are great games... but Xenogears is, IMHO, a much better one.

As far as KOTOR.. Again, a great game! But the battle system was broken and very one dimensional. There's a mile of difference between KOTOR I and II in that department. For all the fuck ups Obsidian did to KOTOR, they made an incredibly improve battle-system. Also, the storyline in KOTOR was pretty straight-forward. You knew you were Revan about half-way into the game. Also, you can beat KOTOR fairly quickly, it's not very challenging at all (game is incredibly easy), and a lot of the missions are just "fetch this."

I love KOTOR, but a great deal of that love is because I so love Star Wars. It's why on replay, I prefer KOTOR II. I know both stories, and KOTOR I is better, but II has far more replay value.

Fallout 3 is a great game, but it's not even the best game in the series. I absolutely love Fallout.. But let's be honest, the story is nonexistent. The battle engine is okay, but at times seems not to make much sense; again, Obsidian made a great deal of improvements in New Vegas. Fallout 3 is massive, and I love the environment and setting.. but again, the main quest is fucking boring. You can also beat Fallout 3 in a single sitting if so inclined. The main story arc is so short, you are forced to play side-quests to get 40+ hours of gameplay. I wish there was more effort put into the story itself.

Also, there are no characters in the game at all.. Unlike every other game I've mentioned, Fallout 3 has no character development whatsoever. So, it's a "role playing game" sure, because you are playing the role of the guy from Vault 101; but still, a story, characters, something would've been nice.

Torment, it's not really even an RPG, it's more like an interactive book. You can count the number of meaningful battles on both hands they are so few are far between. The storyline is fantastic and there are tons of places to go and multiple endings. This game has loads of story, an amazingly deep setting and environment, incredible amounts of character development.. It's just a great game. But unfortunately, it can draw on at times from all of the reading. Again, it's like reading a very long novel. It is intense. There's also just not enough combat in this game, and what combat there is isn't that great.

So yeah, Xenogears, with all it's flaws, is easily the best game on this list. Hands down.

I've never done that.. sounds like an awesome option.. Normally I emulate Xenogears and improve the graphics and use Save States.. It makes the game more enjoyable for me. I also turn the battles off at times using a GS code.. If this is your first playthrough though, don't do that, you'll need the battles to learn deathblows. I just know the game very well, so I don't need the battles as much.

If you do all of the sidequests and d some basic leveling, you're easily looking at 75 hours of gameplay prior to the final dungeon.

This game has the best storyline and character development of any RPG I've ever played. It has the best protagonist and antagonist, backstory, and the best ending I've ever seen. The shit that happens in this game is unlike most others. There is some very light carryover from Neon Genesis, but outside of that, XG is it's own story and far more complex.

Also would you similarly recommend the 3 xenosaga games for ps2 (just looked this up on wiki)?

The first one is definitely worth playing. I know X said to skip all three... I strongly disagree with that. I really enjoyed Xenosaga I, it was a great game and you'll learn a lot about the story from the in-game encyclopedia UMS. If Xenosaga 2 and 3 played like Xenosaga 1, they'd have been much better games; unfortunately, they decided to streamline the game due to folks thinking there was too much going on in the first one. This had the effect of cutting out too much of the good stuff and leaving in the bad (long cutscenes that lead up to battles; the game felt more like an Adventure game than an RPG).

I don't recommend the other 2 unless you want the complete XS storyline. Personally, I don't like XS2 or 3, but XS1 is good enough to play on it's own and has many XG references (makes it interesting to play).

I've heard great things about this series and its one of the few acclaimed RPGs that i haven't tried, just not sure what the best way to get into them is.

Start with Xenogears, then play Xenosaga Ep. I. If you dig it keep going.. Personally, I think you could stop there and just enjoy it, XS2 and 3 aren't necessarily worth playing IMO as they are too focused on KOSMOS and not The Contact.

Edit: Also, xenoblade chronicles for wii?

If you don't have a modded Wii, I can tell you from experience this game emulates VERY well.. Just download it and play it on your PC.. That's how I did. I never beat Xenoblade as I didn't have time, but I hear it does tie in with Xenogears greatly.. I've been meaning to give it a go.

I type incredibly fast.... Also, I only post when I'm at work. I can't really game while I'm here.. I guess I could.. But, I shouldn't! :chuckles:

Also, a game that should be on this list is Dragon Age: Origins...

That was a fucking amazing game.

Yes it was. And Dragon Age 2 was such an abortion that I'm hesitant to try the new one coming out despite how good Origins was.

BioWare's last two games have both been fucking awful. Dragon Age 2 has been mentioned, but let's not forget that Mass Effect 3 had one of the worst endings of all-time. Once EA bought BioWare, the writing was unfortunately on the wall. I'm not sure they'll ever get back to where they were with EA forcing deadlines on them.

I'd mention the KOTOR MMORPG too, but then I'd be the first person to acknowledge its existence in years. :chuckles:

As a side note, I hate how these companies keep giving us World of Warcraft clones based on single-player games when we'd all much rather have another damn single-player game. No one wanted the KOTOR MMORPG. No one asked for it. We all wanted another single-player KOTOR, but instead they forced a lame WoW clone down our throats.

You mean like Elder Scrolls Online and FFXIV? I tried both, and while the latter is a gorgeous game, they're both the same ol' grind-and-loot models. ESO wasn't even worth trying to beta another weekend.

That being said, I've been playing Wildstar. It's sated my MMORPG cravings...for now. The humor, the telegraph system, and the design are pretty worthwhile thus far. I don't have a chance yet (accepting freelance offers so I can work from home, of course) to play near enough to use the C.R.E.D.D. system, but it is useful for those who have the time to sink into gaming.

Yeah the KOTOR game and Elder Scrolls Online were the two I was thinking of when I said that.

I've never gotten the appeal of making Elder Scrolls into an MMO. I've always loved the somber isolationism of those games. They're all about exploring a huge world alone and finding your way slowly through it. Morrowind was by far the best at this, as its world was so much more unique and creepy than the worlds in Oblivion (it was just so generic and all the dungeons looked the same) and even Skyrim (which was much better than Oblivion but still a bit lacking). Exploring Morrowind felt harrowing and dangerous, and the fact that enemies didn't level with you made adventuring treacherous. I really missed that in the sequels, and I don't get the point of the MMO at all. I don't want to explore these worlds with a dozen people. That takes away from the whole experience.
