Who is our starting quarterback in the 2013 opener?

I don't think that is fair. The draft class is incredibly weak, and we don't have a good QB on the team. It's logical for people to see what moves they may look into. Also, it's important to look at guys who can throw first, because Chip Kelly is not looking to run an Urban Meyer QB inside slam offense. Kelly limits the damage his QB's take, but the threat of the QB keeping the ball is favorable.

All of the guys I listed came into the NFL as "duel-threat" type QB's but have maintained back-up jobs in the NFL based ont heir ability to sling the football. It isn't as if these guys are incapable of slinging it.
No matter who is the coach, I don't see any of those guys being guys capable of leading their team to a Super Bowl.. I'm sure if their talent exceeded that of others, a coach would cater to them and their strengths (much like Shanahann is doing in DC now..)

Fact is I don't think we would even be excited about these guys as backups normally...

Man this is a problem potentially with Kelly... His gimmicky offense is leading to terrible names (just cause they have legs that can move) like Tavaris Jackson or Dennis Dixon... Goodness.. These are not good QB's.....

No, this is the problem with Kelly: this notion that he's bringing a gimmicky Oregon offense and going to try to run it at the NFL level is asinine. None of these QB's are good, and none of these QB's are going to be targeted by the Browns. Chip is going to build a more traditional, yet still innovative NFL offense...I'm sure of that. Chip will put Weeden in the shotgun and Trent in zone and power runs, not try to find a shitty QB who can run the Ducks offense.

The real problem is that people are stupid.

:chuckles:

Not sure why, but that had me cracking up. But I agree. No matter what he decides to do (if he comes to the Browns), he is going to be an innovator. Whatever team gets him is in for a real treat.

There isn't anything gimmicky about his offense currently though. Will he adapt it, sure. But you're implying his current offense is college only in scheme, and that is also a fallacy. He likes a vertical passing game off of his run-game. His run game consists of attacking weaknesses in the defense (where are the safeties, are they in base nickel, is the backside linebacker respecting the edge?)

He can put together an offense for Weeden, I just don't see why he would spend that energy though. Weeden is 29, with 1 year under his belt. I think the logical move is to find a guy you can install the offense with and then get "the guy" at a later time. And I'd like to see putting Weeden in shot-gun with Trent Richardson next to him, and see the abuse Trent gets. That's the problem with what you're suggesting. Running power football out of shot-gun without the remote threat of the QB keeping it, is asking for your RB to get his ass kicked. Just pounded. That would be stupid.

I do think Richardson could be used in the same way Kelly utilized Jonathon Stewart and Lagarrette Blount. A nice zone, power run game. But to think you can operate an effective run game in the NFL out of shot-gun, without keeping outside linebackers and safeties honest, is completely laughable.

Agreed. Which is why Vick is my guy. With Vick at the helm, it makes Chip's job that much easier.

Who would you suggest?

EDIT - If you think Alex Smith is the guy now and for the next 6+ years....then you pull the trigger.

Good friend of mine is a huge Georgia fan, and he always compared him to Rex Grossman. Undersized with a penchant for making head scratching picks at bad times.

Another good comp

I'm curious to see what Joe Webb looks like tonight. I didn't realize he was likely to get the start because of a Ponder injury so it's coincidental I listed him. If he plays well, the league will take notice. Conditions will be difficult in Green Bay and I can't imagine his game is sharp right now. But he has crazy athletic ability and a rocket arm. He's pretty unheard of, but Minny thought he might be their guy until Ponder showed he can handle the load this year. Also, if the Browns do indeed bring over the personnel guy from Minnesota it'd be interesting to see if he makes a play for someone he's familiar with.

Murray is far and away a better prospect.

Murray might honestly be worse than Colt based on the games I've seen. He has looked downright pathetic at times the last two years.

Speaking of Mike Vick, looks like he's not too pleased sitting at home watching the playoffs:

I'd take a risk on him if Kelly thinks he can succeed here. The Browns have a better offensive line, along with a special back in Trent Richardson and solid young receivers in Gordon, Little, etc.

Not a long-term replacement, but he can plug the hole for a few years until the team drafts or signs their quarterback of the future.

So, who will be our backup for when Vick breaks his ribs in week 3?

Or turns the ball over 14 times in that 3 game span?

Pass... this isnt Madden, this isnt fantasy. I want to find out if Weeden can be "the" guy in Kelly's offense, and if he isnt, the search continues. Vick is a temp move, and a very risky one at that.
