Who is our starting quarterback in the 2013 opener?

Assuming we get Chip Kelly, here is a list of guys I could see the Browns targeting via trade or FA:

Dennis Dixon - Backing up Joe Flacco in Baltimore: I don't think he'd be acquired to be a starter, but he put up great numbers at Oregon with Chip Kelly and understands the system. Dixon also put togther a couple of good starts in Pittsburgh before being signed as a Free Agent to Baltimore. Dixon tore his ACL as a senior at Oregon and lost a bit of his athleticism but he was always a throw first guy anyways, which is what Kelly likes.

Zac Robinson - Backing up Andy Dalton in Cincinnati: Robinson put up huge stats at Oklahoma State, similar to Weeden. Robinson has a nice arm, but really good athleticism. He's the type of guy who would keep defenses on the backside honest. Again, a guy who would be a good back-up to whoever ultimately gets the job.

Mike Vick - This is an obvious choice. He still has a few good years, IMO. The key is finding the right system and an offensive line that can protect him. He was lethal in Philly when he had time to throw backed by a good run game. He is certainly athletic enough to force defenses to stay honest on the backside and he has a cannon of an arm. I'm not sure Chip Kelly would want to hitch his wagon to Vick though. If it doesn't work, a lot of people will become skeptical of whether Chip Kelly can produce. Going with a less established guy builds in a buffer.

Joe Webb - Kid is crazy athletic with a big arm. He currently backs up Christian Ponder in Minnesota. He showed some glimpses in the pre-season and finishing out last year as starter due to injury to Ponder. I think Webb could bring a lot of excitement to this type of offense.

I'd add a guy like Terrelle Pryor, but with such a weak QB class this draft, I think Oakland will see what they have in him next year. Pryor looked good in his first start, and gives Oakland a much better chance at success than Leinart. The Raiders will not pick up their option on Carson Palmer unless they want to waste $9M.

I'm pumped up though. I think Chip Kelly would be able to move the ball with any of these guys, and could probably increase the productivity of our current players if he chose to do so. There are a lot of variables to bringing Kelly in, but it will be fun to follow. I hope we learn the outcome soon.

Glad you're not our GM...

Are we seriously considering backups that have not started in the NFL as our guy?

KC tried this with Cassell and failed. The Texans tried this with Shaub and have yet to win the big one. And this was after they proved they could hang with the big boys at least sometimes.

I'd rather crash and burn with Weeden this year and get a high draft pick than sign Vick. Who knows, maybe Weeden surprises me and figures it out, if not we can look for our QB in the draft.

Best case with Vick is what? A couple 8-8 or 9-7 seasons and then we have to find somebody else without a high pick?

True, I'd rather have one more bad season then take Vick and be stuck in mediocrity. Might as well grab a defensive player in this draft and worry about our offense in the later rounds.

People are really clinging to the idea of Kelly bringing in more terrible QBs just because they can run.

You want to crash and burn with Weeden.....again?

Terrible.

I'd rather Weeden figures it out and continues to grow and can be our QB for next 7 years, but that seems unlikely if Chip Kelly is coach.

If there were some attractive options on the market, be it draft or free agency, I would be all for replacing him. However, I don't see anyone out there that I'd want.

Is it that hard to believe Chip Kelly could style an offense around Weeden's strengths rather then force a system down his throat?

I threw out a few names they may be interested in due to the styles they play with. I didn't say any of these guys were long-term, Super Bowl winning Quarterbacks. For the millionth time, with such a weak QB draft class, and having QB's on the roster that are very sub-par, I think any of the guys on the above list would be considered, even as back-up options.

I don't think Weeden is talented enough to warrant styling an offense around.

Ultimately that's up to Kelly, or whoever the new coach is, but I'd rather have the coach try to run the system they want and adjust later if there are players talented enough to force the adjustment.

If Brandon Weeden had the ability or talent of a guy like Andrew Luck, ya probably. I don't see why Kelly would waste any time adapting his offense around a 29 year old, very average, quarterback.
