Jason Whitlock got 700K a year to jump to Fox Sports so I'm assuming ESPN backed up the Brinks truck for Windhorst as well making it a no brainer. I doubt The PD could get in the ballpark.
What? No calls for franchise tags for mid-market newspaper reporters?
The Cavs are a lottery team?I'm sorry but some of the people in this thread are being fucking babies about this......
Windhorst is a damn good beat writer and by all accounts. Covering a lottery team or covering a historic team nationally? You make that choice.
I'm bummed because I think Windy is top shelf....but not gonna hold it against him that he took a promotion. And ya know what? When windy writes his first article questioning Lebron nationally, you'll be back on his nuts.
Stay classy cleveland FFS

Wow you're an a-hole. Is this your way of jealously downplaying Windy's great work he's served us with for 7 years? Give us another Chris Mihm story.
How does Jason Whitlock compare to Windy's situation at all? He was a writer with the Kansas City Star until about a month and a half ago after being there for 16 years, while doing work for ESPN and FS through the years. The only way they compare is in girth.
Regardless... to most of us, this loss hurts more than losing the piece of dirt in free agency. Windy was very much a fan like us, who despite his consistent journalistic integrity reported things that we fans wanted to hear on RCF chats, Twitter and Cleveland.com for quite some time. Though he rose to fame in the same way and timeframe that James did, Windy was thought to be one of us, a true and true fan deep down, and brought a refreshing rare perspective.
He's done an excellent job keeping fans on their toes and serving as a go-to be all end all for Cavaliers knowledge. Unfortunately those days are over now. I for one will miss Windy and will read his articles from time to time just as a reminder of what used to be as Branson Wright, Mary Schmitt Boyer, Bob Finnan, and Jason Lloyd all try to pick up the pieces. Good luck Windy, make that dough and enjoy Miami, you deserve it.

I find it laughable how many of you are letting this guy off the hook. Geez, stand up for what your city and team represents. This move was about following James' coattails and, IMO, all but confirms why he failed to embody any real conviction or sting in his articles following James bailing on the organization. Also explains why he chastised Gilbert's reaction email.
Now to his credit, he basically admitted he's going to Miami to sniff James' ass, but spare me the nonsense about having property there or how the Heat are such a 'big' story. Sure had had property there for four years and didn't re-locate until now.
Wonder why?
And as far as following a story - huh? I'm not a journalism major but isn't that what you're NOT supposed to do? Particularly when it comes to uprooting your family.
Even moreso, the most appalling aspect of this 'decision' is that it reveals Brian doesn't believe in this current rendition of Cavs. I mean, seriously, people act like we got 2002 talent on this squad. What if the Cavs surprise pundits and become an above average team? Maybe a 50 win team? What if Gilbert uses the TE and steals another complimentary player that solidifies the Cavs as an annual playoff contender?
Is this not a great 'story'?
You damn right it is. And it'll be a story Brian never gave himself a chance to cover cause he's not a believer either. Well if he is, he obviously believes in the spoils of covering James more.
