The draw was definitely a tough one for the Americans. Everyone was hoping that they'd get a weaker African team than Ghana and a weaker 2nd European team than Portugal. But, the reality is that the Americans have a far more forgiving qualifying region than the European countries for example. So, it is hard to feel too sorry for them since they are pretty much guaranteed to qualify for the World Cup each time now. Until the Americans improve and become a legitimate top 10 team in the world, they're going to need a favorable draw and some luck to get out of their group.

Ghana is not the same team from 2010. Not at all, actually. People here are acting like that team was frozen in time and moved to 2014. They have regressed and the USA has progressed. They might have our number, but you have to end that streak eventually. Tactics killed the USA in that match. Those early goals (in all of those games, minus Algeria) were back breakers. Jurgën will have them ready.

I don't want to play down Portugal, but I am also not going to drool over their play. Look at qualifying. A total one man show with a lack of depth. The USA needs to be physical and wear them down. Qualifying isn't the World Cup, sure, but you can't tell me a team that tied Northern Ireland, was tested by Luxembourg and had TWO draws with Israel, is a team the United States is going to bow down to. Who even knows is Ronaldo is still stable by then, with injuries nagging him.

Germany... yeah. I'll chalk it as a loss.

I am not confident they will make it out, but I am also not writing them off right now. Battle tested against European teams and playing well. Though, that last match to Austria was a bummer, the win vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina, with 3/4 of their key players, showed me they can compete. Writing them off right now is foolish.

If they make it out of group play, that means they played damn well. Their ceiling is semi-finals. I mean literally an un-breakable ceiling. People need to pump the brakes on them having no shot in the group stage.
