Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I got an 1170 on the SAT, with a 660 in Math.

And yes they did tighten up their standards a lot which was unfortunate. According to my Dad everyone that went to HS in Ohio went to Ohio State back in his day.

I also think being out of state actually hurt my cause. Given that OSU is so big they don't really have room for outsiders that don't have a 3.5+ GPA

Ever since they changed the SAT scores I really have no idea what's considered good anymore. That's why I posted my ACT score. I don't even remember what I got on the SAT. Granted that was about 7 years ago now. And yeah, they tightened up admissions when I was applying there. People the year before me got in with crap grades and mediocre scores. When I applied a lot more people got rejected as they raised their standards.

During my college application experience I found that essays and test scores carried more weight than my grades. I mean my grades weren't terrible but they weren't good. I also had a lot of extracurriculars that made for great essay topics. I got into schools that friends of mine didn't get in to even though they had better grades.

Looks like I was right.

As usual. *troll face*

What?!? Until the grade has been changed and you have a reputable academic career, we will call this a dead heat at best.

Again I only tried to help the kid, not get into a teacher vs. student battle. None of you have seen the magnificence of a Keys lesson.

I'm thinking the 1170 is what did it. Isn't that out of 2400? If so that's a fairly low score.

Out of curiosity Keys, what do you teach?

Nooooo, the 1170 was just out of the Math and Reading sections lol. Christ, if i got 1170 out of 2400.....

With writing I got 1730

AH, okay that makes a lot more sense. That's about 75th percentile and equates to an ACT score of about 24. It's not bad, not great. If you had a higher GPA you probably would have gotten in. If you had the same GPA and a few points higher on the SAT you probably would have gotten in. But like you said, it's all in the past.

I think I had a 1.7 in highschool. Got a 0.0 one semester. Only reason I got into real school is because I have a million and a half credits

I teach world history and English, but I have taught debate, U.S. History, American Lit, and others in the high school and juco level here in Cali.

.. and I still made time to crack poop jokes on RCF.

Talk to your school guidance counselor. See what options you may have.

There could be a lot of things going on. He could end up grading the class on a steep curve, as I do with my AP Biology and Chemistry classes.

A bad grade in an AP class also usually won't carry much weight at all, ESPECIALLY at the very end of a 4 year long high school career.

Though I tend to curve from the start so I don't murder my students' morale when they start turning in poor work early on.

At the end of the day I see no reason why you shouldn't easily be able to get into Ohio State. Keep up the good work in all of your other classes, get some extra-curricular activities, apply early, and get a good letter from a trusted teacher talking about how much of a special snowflake you are. Don't get in any trouble, you'll be fine. It's likely you'll be accepted before that F even gets a chance to bring down your GPA. If the college inquires about it after the fact, simply be honest. But ultimately, you're worrying over nothing, but it is nice to see a young kid so concerned with his education.

I'll take a few jabs here as well. AP History is easily the least useful of all of the AP classes. If you can pass the test and get the college credits, it's still worth it, but if you want to learn something useful hop into a Calculus, Biology, or Chemistry class(or English...throwing Keys a bone here).

As for the grade on your paper, I have no idea. History papers are for hippies and pseudo-scholars. Fuck grammar, give me some choice beakers and Sudafed and I'll show you a real world skill :chuckles:

I spent most of my senior year getting handjobs in the back of the classroom from my best friend's girlfriend.

Also...no I didn't.

But you can imagine if I did.

If there is one thing I learned about the education process it's that the higher level of education you are in, the bigger the ego of the teacher. College professors are some of the biggest dicks in the world.

I think you are fretting too much. You don't have to go to a "good" (and by good I mean private) college to get a good education.

College is what you make of it. There are plenty of great state universities that have great programs.

Here is my story:

I wanted to go to Case Western. I got in to Case Western. I didn't have the money for Case Western. I applied to OSU and UC as safety nets. A lot of my family and friends went to OSU, so I wanted to go to OSU. My mom made me visit UC anyways... even though I told her I probably wasn't going to go there.

We get to UC for a standard tour and the dean of aerospace engineering comes by to take me on a personal tour. He illustrates their facilities, shows the type of partnerships they have with GE, and highlights their fantastic student/teacher ratio in the department. He showed me how valuable co-op was, and basically sold me on UC.

I then went to OSU to tour the college. Here's the thing too, my uncle is an alumni of OSU and donates heavily. We had some wanker sophomore business student take us on a tour... and that's when I realized I would have been just another number at OSU.

I am in my last few years in grad school here at UC, and it turns out Case Western's Aero program is in the stone age compared to UC's, and UC (while having many less students in the aero program) brings in similar research funding compared to OSU.

My point is, there are misconceptions about college. You need to tour campuses and do your research on the program the college carries, not the college itself. For instance UC also has a great DAAP school (design, art, architecture and planning), OU has a fantastic journalism school in Scripps. Ohio State is competitive in a lot of things... etc. You can easily get into a number of good colleges that have great programs you are interested in... for much less than a private school tuition.

I'm glad I ended up at UC, and that isn't a knock against OSU or Case. Case is a great college, just not worth the money, and OSU is a great college, but I wanted a more personable relationship with my professors. There are just too many other students at OSU for me to be comfortable. Big class rooms make me drift off to sleep.

Good points but it's not like at OSU every class is going to be 500 people. Once you get into your major, I found plenty of personable classes with ~20 or so students.
