I have no reason to believe Kyrie ever had any ill feelings towards the city of Cleveland itself, but I certainly believe he wasn't too happy with the coach, the organization, and the teammates around him this year...hence all the reported grumblings. But I think David Blatt and the roster reshaping by Griffin go a long way to addressing these issues, so there's no long-term concern.

But at the end of the day, all of this was irrelevant regardless. Even at the height of the "Kyrie wants out" freak out, most of us thought he'd sign a max extension with us regardless, if we offered it. There was just too much money he would have left on the table to not accept it, especially for someone with Kyrie's injury history.

Griffin has laid out a definitive plan that would fit Kyrie's playing style and strengths, has gotten three players who fit that system already in this draft (one of which could become a superstar), and Kyrie couldn't ask for two better coaches than Blatt and Lue. On top of this, we plan on making big moves in free agency, and all of our young guys are a year older and are ready to make the jump.

Kyrie also makes the most money here and also couldn't ask for a better fan base.

There is a lot to like about the direction in which this team is headed.

Give me a break, he could make max money anywhere my friend. Quit trying to find something to criticize him about or make something up about him that isn't true. He could make the max in LA, he could make the max in NY. Just enjoy this signing and how our team is moving in a positive direction and is having a wonderful off-season.

He can only make the Max in Cleveland

You guys are so desperate for a star to be married to Cleveland that you spend every day in this thread convincing you Kyrie is that guy.

Fact is, Irving was always going to sign this. Who has ever turned it down? The way he played this past year, he isn't worth it. But I'm really looking forward to his 4th year and see what Blatt can do with him. I am expecting big things.

He doesn't need to love Cleveland. At all

He has to have the desire to be a winner and a willingness to work with the team and the new coaching staff

He has to have the desire to become the best player he can be and to grow into being a better leader, whether just by example or by outgoing leadership

He needs to appreciate the 5 year, 90 million offer and be comfortable enough with the direction of the organization that he accepts the max years(5) without any ETO or player options.

He needs to be mindful and thoughtful of things he says about the city and make sure to take an active enough role in the city that supports him and that he pulls his paycheck in.

But he doesn't need to "love" the city nor should be expected to or have it held against him if he doesn't

The "does a player love the city" thing is a dynamic/myth created by nervous fans of losing teams. As a team and a fanbase, we need to be transitioning from that to the mindset of a winning organization, where the players we retain and add are happy to play for a winner, happy to play for an organization that does things first class, and happy to play for a fanbase that supports them like crazy.

All of that is far more important than any professional athlete not born in Cleveland "loving" the city.

I'm happy as can be that he's committing long term. People don't do that if they want to be gone. What I'm saying is that the rumblings the past few months are assuredly real and it'd be naive to think they didn't have any merit. I wouldn't blame him, you'd be mad too if your coach isn't qualified to coach a middle school girls team and as a whole the season was a huge disappointment.

He'd get the max from every team in the league.

What does that even mean?...

What does that even mean?...

1) not the rose rule max
2) it means you want desperately to think that your wife married you for more than your money....

Here are a few guys that weren't worth a max contract: Gilbert Arenas, Roy Hibbert, Ben Wallace, Jermaine Oneal, Rashard Lewis, Rudy Gay, etc.

I'm sorry Chris, but I'm not ready to put our rookie of the year and two time all star in the above bucket. I'm inclined to believe that last year's stat dropoff was due to a troubled locker room and a coach who didn't have any offensive plays.

We'll see how this pans out next season, and perhaps we'll revisit this talk, but as of now, I strongly disagree with you

Hey now, Jermaine was third in MVP voting. Injuries wrecked him, and having his crazy(I can't express how crazy he was) teammate's back in Auburn Hills.

Roy would've been Portland's mistake if we hadn't matched. I don't know how I feel about that.

This is my obligatory "I told you so" post. Carry on.

If anything, I would have been disturbed if he was totally happy playing for a dysfunctional team that was going nowhere with goobers like Bynum, Clark, Jack, and Gee playing major roles.

Yep.

If he does sign the full max, I'll look forward to throwing it in Windhorst's face via Twitter. He won't respond, but I'll still enjoy it thoroughly. It's the little things in life...

Definitely, and also Jason Lloyd. Remember all those passionate Windy/ESPN stories and discussions on WKNR about how Kyrie wanted out of Cleveland? When he does sign the extension, look for a small article from ESPN.

I believe ESPN was just trying to bad mouth Cleveland so LeBron would not even think about signing here.

Irving and Gilbert take so much shit from a part of this fanbase. Just don't get it. Go root for whatever team lebron plays for if you hate the owner and star player so much.

Not from the fanbase, but from outsiders such as ESPN, Jason Lloyd and Windhorst. The fanbase supports the Cavs and fills the Q, but not nearly as much as they will this year.

Super bumps for posterity.

CtB: Last question: so there’s been a lot written this year about Kyrie being unhappy in Cleveland – that he wants to leave as soon as possible. A lot of people in Cleveland particularly have criticized that line of story for being the equivalent of picking at a scab, at the very best, to just plain not being newsworthy when the team has control over him for as long as they do. What’s your response to that criticism?

Windhorst: 2010 taught me a lot of lessons and I’m applying them the way I’m covering the LeBron free agency. I’ve written a lot of stuff this year that in 2010 I’d have been like, “What’s the point of writing that? It’s not going to happen.” Well…
And, as far as Kyrie, rumblings and stuff, with LeBron I would have let it go. Well I’m not going to let it go [now]. I’m going to talk about it and here’s the truth:
The truth is [Kyrie’s] camp has been putting out there for years – years – that he doesn’t want to be in Cleveland. That they don’t want him in Cleveland. He doesn’t like Mike Brown. He didn’t like Chris Grant. He doesn’t like Dion Waiters. He’s already gotten a General Manager fired. He might get Mike Brown fired. This is the last time – once he signs he loses all of his leverage – so this is the last time he gets to enact leverage. I know he’s said all the right things so, fine, on July 1, when they offer a max contract – which they will – and I don’t even know if he’s a max player, but you have to sign him – sign a five year, no out. That’s what a max contract is. A max contract is five years, no out. If you want out or you want three years, that’s not a max contract. You want three years? Okay, we’ll give you $12 million a year. We’re not giving you the full thing.

I’m just giving you my feel right now and my feel is that he’s not crazy about [signing the full max extension] unless he gets everything checked off across the board.

And the other thing is: if the Cavs ever dream of having LeBron, it’s not going to be with Kyrie there. LeBron and Kyrie have drifted apart in the last few years, even to the point that if the Cavs wanted to get LeBron they would maybe trade Kyrie for someone who would fit better with LeBron. And I’m not making that up. That line of thinking was not originated by me. That’s just the truth.
Now, Kyrie has been very upset by this stuff but, whether he wants to acknowledge it or not, it exists out there and I’m just saying the way it is. I’m sure Cavs fans are upset about it. The Cavs are upset about it. When I’ve written about it, the Cavs have been like “Why does this stuff have to be written about us?” I say, “It has to be written about you because this could happen.”
I think this is very elementary from Dan Gilbert’s perspective. If Kyrie wants to play for Team USA, he’s going to have to do his deal before mid-July when he goes to play for it and he’ll either take the five years or he won’t. If the answer is “no” to five years, he goes on the trade block. Period. I think it’s pretty simple.

I thought I knew Kyrie, but he’s just disappointed me this year with his immaturity. I really do think that if he will lock up for five that you have to do that. But if he starts messing around playing power games, you’ve got to trade him. Dan Gilbert has said as much. At the end of the day, if Kyrie was really a max player, this Cavs team would not be where they are. He would have carried them to much more than this. I’m not saying he has to be LeBron, but he’s only spent one day of his career above .500. I know it’s unpopular for some people, but after 2010 I’m not in the business of messing around. It’s definitely out there in the NBA that Kyrie is not happy in Cleveland – but if that’s not the case, he has a golden opportunity to prove everybody wrong and that opportunity is coming in a few months.
