An Open Letter to Dan Gilbert

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So... I wonder what the next letter is going to say?

Dan Gilbert needs to use his leverage. He's got the team that fits Lebron best.. I'd have been pushing plan b three days ago. Looking to swing a deal to get another star here... Lebron is waiting simply because he can. He either steps up and comes here or we make the needed moves we need to make now.

Dan Gilbert never learns. He's the owner, not Lebron's bitch the second time over..

Lebron would find that power play hilarious.

"Wait, if I don't decide they are gonna go after who? Yeah, OK (laughs)"

He can find it hilarious when he gets trampled in the finals again with Miami then. I'm all for making moves to go after Carmelo. We can't wait forever. We cleared that cap space and we're going to look stupid if we sit on it.

Don't gut the team. That's my letter to him.

The next letter would be short and simple. It would say " ... fool me twice, shame on me."

This is EXACTLY the same position the Cavs were in four years ago -- waiting on pins and needles to see what Bron would do, and letting the rest of free agency slip by while they wait for LeBron to make up his mind -- which he is once again apparently doing without any direct contact with the Cavs. Have we learned nothing from 2010?

Yes, LeBron is a great player. Yes, he would improve the Cavs a lot. Yes, the first choice would be to have him return. But if he's not all in, then move on to other options. My "second and increasingly close to first" option would be for the Cavs to announce that they are ending their pursuit of LeBron, with a tone of "LeBron is a great player, and we wish him well in his future endeavors, but our organization has chosen to move in another direction." Take control of the process, instead of letting others determine your destiny for you.

I'm ready to move to plan B, as long as plan B isn't trading Wiggins for Love, then hoping Lebron returns as a result.

If he's not his bitch, then making no moves would make more sense.

Trading away all our assets as a way to leverage him coming back would be idiotic.

I completely agree. We should have been confident in the direction of the team without him--treat him like a bonus should he elect to play here. Tell him we want him as a part of our core, but we are prepared to move on by a certain deadline. At this point, we have missed out on some young FA's who could have helped us.

Their plan A of trading jack and loads of assets sucked balls. I just wonder how much of a disaster that plan B is going to be.

Agreed. No trading Wiggins, and I'm almost ready to say no trading Bennett. I want to see him with a coach that actually can draw up an offense before saying "ok, enough of this"

I disagree 100%, W&G.

You're saying he shouldn't be LeBron's bitch again, and yet you want Gilbert to swing a deal to get another star here - presumably in order to entice LeBron to "shit or get off the pot". That would demonstrate yet again that Gilbert was trying to appease LeBron.

Presuming that "the Letter" and lack of a public apology is truly why LeBron is delaying, then ending this stalemate is simple.

If you're Gilbert you contact Rich Paul and tell him that if LeBron truly wants to come back, the Cavs need an answer TODAY or else we have to move on to other free agent targets in order to look out for the long term interests of the organization.

If you're Gilbert you tell Paul that if a public apology is what is holding up this deal, then you will gladly give a sincere, heartfelt, contrite apology at the presser after LeBron signs here.

If you're Gilbert you tell Paul that any public apology that you give now will simply look like you're groveling and that LeBron is being egomaniacal. Only a public apology at the introductory presser assures that both parties come out of this looking like mature adults who have put their past blunders behind them, have forgiven each other, and are ready to move forward with "unfinished business".

That's not what I'm saying. You have another line of attack this offseason that doesn't include Lebron James at all. You tell Lebron we need our answer by this time, or we execute plan b. I'm tired of Lebron being the center of this franchise's universe, basically. Next year we could have everything in place.. And not even need Lebron.

Maybe I misread it, but I thought W&G was referring to deals that would improve the team even if LBJ did not come here -- including some deals that might actually preclude him from coming. Just put the wheels in motion, and if hearing those wheels isn't enough to get LBJ to announce, then just go ahead with them, and he can find somewhere else to play. At least, that's what I thought W&G was saying.

Well said. That's the only scenario under which I think any apology would be tolerable.
