CHRIS WEBBER RIPS THE REPORT ABOUT DAVID BLATT PARROTING LEBRON’S PLAY-CALLING
  • Eric Goldschein
  • 10:57 am, April 3rd, 2015
A few days ago, Brian Windhorst went on “The B.S. Report” podcast and said that David Blatt just basically stands on the sideline and repeats whatever play-call LeBron James decides on. It was yet another blow to Blatt’s standing as the coach of the Cavaliers, positing him as a parrot on LeBron’s shoulder.

Of course, this ignores the obvious fact that in basketball, whoever runs point usually calls out the plays anyway, as an extension of the coach on the floor. LeBron, often the de facto point guard because he’s a basketball genius and good ball-handler, is simply doing what many before him have done. Chris Webber made a point of explaining that on last night’s TNT broadcast of the Cavs-Heat game.

You’ll notice that nobody — from David Aldridge to Ian Eagle to Webber — mentions Windhorst or ESPN by name. But the message is loud and clear: Shut up.

Windhorst’s time on the podcast gave us some nice gossip, but at the end of the day it appears as though ESPN truly has an axe to grind with LeBron and the Cavs, and will publish anything that causes drama and thus fuel for the 24-hour news cycle.

For bonus material, check out Blatt shutting down a reporter asking about the “issue” that is LeBron operating in the post (go to 4:30 mark).

I'd definitely listen to this one if you have a chance, some of the stuff that reads bad doesn't sound quite so awful when Windhorst is talking about it.

That's a fair take, I think. The link to the podcast is now in the write up post I did. So people can listen to the show for themselves and come to their own conclusions.

I was just so ticked off with the "Cavs dysfunction" storyline this week that I had had enough. And I'm glad Windy got called out, even though I'm probably as big of a Windy fan as anyone around.

This team is dominating and is the favorite to win the title. Do we really need a "Cavs insider" talking gloom and doom now and bringing up dirty laundry from earlier in the season? I don't think so.

I was right there with Blatt yesterday in his post game presser when he talked about "nonsense" reports. That comes up from 4:40 to 5:50 in the video below (Vardon asks a question and then it goes to the Cleveland Scene guy after). And you'll notice that he brings it up with the sympathetic Cleveland Scene guy.

It's clear to me that Blatt is calling out Windy here. As well he should.

Blatt has proven everything by now. He's not completely adapted to the NBA game yet, but this guy survived a full out attempt to oust him by powerful forces and the team is now the favorite to win the title. Get off his back and end these lame storylines already.

15. David Aldridge got it wrong. I did not say that LeBron ignored Blatt (think this what he said).

Windy took offense to Aldridge saying that LeBron was "contradicting" Blatt, but then went on to say that he knows that LeBron "ignores or changes" plays.

I may only have an MA in English, but I don't know how those two things are different.

I should say though, in Windy's defense, that I think he was just giving Simmons what he wants, which is sensationalism and rumors. Simmons lives for all that shit, even if it's not true.

I totally agree. Well put.

Windy used to be Mr Lebron. Now he's Mr ESPN, and that apparently means Mr TMZ Sensationalism.

I still like Windy a lot, but I don't think this past week has been his finest hour.

Quite frankly, this 'bad week' extends at the very least to last summer. This rumor mongering, soap opera, strawman building ESPN BS has been going on with him for at LEAST that long - I actually wonder, with respect, what it is you like about him anymore? Because this bad week you speak of is SOP for him anymore where it comes to the Cavs, and some of us have been saying that all along.

LeBron could certainly be a lot more supportive of Blatt, and, therefore, end this narrative, but I don't think he's going to fully support him until they win a title. I truly believe that anything short of a Finals run could spell doom for Blatt.

I just hope ESPN doesn't allow Mark Jackson to broadcast Cavs playoff games - especially if they end up in the Finals against the Warriors. God, he'd be insufferable. He'll either be lobbying for the Cavs job, or explaining how he'd do a better job than Kerr.

I didn't think Simmons and Windhorst said that the Cavs were disfunctional. My take on it was that they said there are teams focused on their coach, there are teams that are disfunctional, and then there's what's going on with the Cavs, which is very unusual, and that 20 year NBA scouts were asking "what is going on here". I didn't come away with the impression that they were saying that the Cavs were disfunctional, just that the Cavs were operating very differently and it was going to be very interesting to watch in the playoffs.

it's the way Windhorst presents things now. He says "I don't know what is going on there" instead of saying "I don't know what is going on there, but whatever it is it is working, as the Cavs are the favorites in the East and possibly for the title"

Windhorst was great when he was on the Cavs beat. Now that he has been shut out in cle, it's a lot of Broussard-esque journalism. i.e. all speculation and not much meat with regards to actual basketball between the lines.

Props to Windy for this Bucks game write up (Windy was at the game) that is devoid of any semblance of "Dysfunctional Cavs" storyline.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/1...ats-milwaukee-bucks-clinch-no-2-seed-playoffs

Good, solid write up with some excellent informational nuggets. Please Windy, just stick more with this type of thing rather than what TMZ ESPN may want you to write or say to bait readers, listeners or viewers.

@Douglar - I agree with what you said. Unfortunately Windy's 'take' on things seemed to open up the door for the "Dysfunctional Cavs" storyline that the rest of the media was happy to run with afterwards. That's what ticked me off.

Someone said in another thread (Blatt thread, I think) that ESPN's Elhassan was trying to defend Windy's take from 'ignorant' fans who apparently just don't get it. Stop. The worst thing that many of these outlets do is to underestimate their audience. If the audience senses BS, then that's probably what they're getting.

Hey Windy --- 4.10.15

01. (Cleveland Indians opening day talk)

02. (NCAA Championship basketball game talk)

03. (Why Windy hates Duke)

04. (Why Windy respects Coach K of Duke)

05. (Talking about NCAA basketball prospects for the NBA draft)

06. Don't worry about the next 4 games or about the talk of whether guys should rest or not. Don't worry if guys take time off. Games are meaningless. "Rest vs rust" is just media guys filling time [but Blatt has talked about keeping guys in rhythm; this sounds like Windy's version of what is and is not important].

07. The Celtics games coming up are important for Boston. But not for the Cavs. Cavs have to do what is best to them, if that means to rest guys so be it.

08. Don't ever overreact to 1 playoff game. Like if the Cavs go down 0-1 in a series.

09. The first day of the Finals is 8 weeks away. It's a long process.

10. The toughest grind of the playoffs is the mental part, more so than the physical part.

11. The Cavs have the ability to score points in dramatic fashion, very quickly.

12. If the Cavs get down in a playoff game, they can get back into it because they can score quickly.

13. If the Cavs lose 1-2 games in the first round, it's not a big deal.

14. If the Cavs go down 2-1 in a series, people will panic. Including ESPN. We will stoke that panic (use it for headlines and stories).

15. LeBron has been behind in a number of playoff series, and come back to win them.

16. Bill Simmons made the case in his podcast that the Bucks could upset the Raptors in the first round.

17. Celtics play a different style of switching defense.

18. Cavs should use the two games against Boston to scout them.

19. Cavs want the Raptors in the #3 seed.

20. I would pick Cavs over the Bulls in 6 games. But it would be a tough series.

21. Raptors are not super talented, and Lowry is hurting.

22. Cavs could have dream first two rounds. Sub 500 team and then winner of Bucks/Raptors.

23. Cavs should be rooting for the Raptors to win out.

24. Caller: Has LeBron/Blatt relationship got better? Do you have different take on LeBron calling plays now after the reaction in the media last week? What role will Perkins play in playoffs?

25. Windy: LeBron and Blatt are fine; they have working relationship. LeBron trusts him more now than earlier in the season.

26. Windy: When I said LeBron was calling plays, not a big deal. Would be different if he played for Popovich, LeBron would call fewer plays then. Media ran with what I said, made it a big deal. Bigger than how I felt about it.

27. Windy: I don't want to talk anymore about the controversy over my comments or my getting "called out." Most of what was said about it was said by people (I think he said) who don't understand how the league works (I think this was the ESPN Elhassan argument that was mentioned in the Blatt thread). [Good thing here is that Windy is determined to move on from this whole 'dirty laundry' discussion. Great.]

28. Windy: I don't think Perkins will play much in the playoffs. He's an insurance policy.

29. [So, Windy still took a bit of a 'comparative' shot at Blatt by comparing him to Popovich and by mentioning that LeBron may have scrapped Blatt's offense earlier in the season, but Windy wants to move on from early in the season 'dirty laundry' and not focus on negative stuff with Blatt, it seems. Awesome.]

30. Tweeter: How is the playoff atmosphere at the Q?

31. Windy: Fans are intense, it should be an advantage for the Cavs.

32. LeBron told me (at the Bucks road game, which Windy was at) that he likes playing on the road in the playoffs.

33. Tweeter: What will Mike Miller's role be down the stretch and into the playoffs?

34. Windy: Miller is a zombie. Will be revived and hit threes. Can do it at any time.

35. With trades, Miller has less of a role now. Ideally Cavs won't see him (in playoffs).

36. Cavs could use Miller as a "curveball" move in a series, though, to change momentum in a series.

37. If Mike Miller makes just one play in the playoffs to help Cavs win, then his salary is worth it. [Too bad the Heat didn't realize this; LeBron might still be there. Which could be Windy's point]

38. I think James Jones will get more run than Mike Miller (and Marion) in the playoffs.

39. The big NBA news of the last week is what happened in Atlanta.

40. Hawks have leveled off in last 6 weeks. Clinched early.

41. Millsap hurt his shoulder. Sefalosha out for the year with the lower leg injury.

42. Sefalosha would have guarded LeBron or Kyrie. With Carroll, that was who Atlanta was going to use to guard LeBron and Kyrie.

43. Sefalosha injury is significant for the Hawks.

44. Host: I give credit to Brad Stevens of the Celtics.

45. Windy: Yes credit to Celtics. They can be hard to guard. They switch a lot on defense.

46. I'm not sure if any of Boston's top 7 players would play in Cleveland's top 7 rotation.

47. Cavs would have big edge over Boston in terms of talent in a series.

48. SALARY CAP 101. Nuggets acquired a player who will likely be waived, and it will cost everyone on the roster $100,000. They were below the salary cap floor. So the difference the team is below the salary cap floor is split up between the entire roster. But Denver picked up Shavlik Randolph on waivers and that put them above the salary cap floor (or less below it), so roster not get the bonus now from team being below the salary cap floor (or as far below it). Saved the team $1.2 million.

49. NON BOLD PREDICTION. Cavs will play Nets in the playoffs in the first round. Cavs were 3-1 against the Nets this year.

50. Cavs may want to beat the Wizards next week to help make sure Toronto gets the #3 seed.

51. I think Thunder make the playoffs rather than the Pelicans. But it won't matter. Warriors will wipe them out.

52. Watch who the Spurs play in the playoffs. It is in flux.

53. I will be watching The Masters later today. But I will say I'm going to be watching the Indians' opener, because my wife cares about the Indians' opener.

Windy still butthurt over the blowback from his "LeBron calls all the plays" story he advanced, and I love it. And he still can't resist getting in a subtle shot or two, either.

One thing he's absolutely right about is Mike Miller, who I really expect to make like Robert Horry and come off the bench and make a huge shot or two in the playoffs.

Is anyone else still befuddled at how much Windy’s personality has changed since he was last here and covering the Cavs? His whiny anti-Duke rant at the beginning of the podcast was very off-putting to me.
