JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Holy overreaction, Marc Stein.

Stein doesnt let up on Smith with this question...

4. Fact or Fiction: The refs deserve some blame for how they officiated the series.
Adande: Fiction. That would be like saying Jae Crowder deserved the payback for what Kelly Olynyk did to Kevin Love. With different crews working each game, you can't hold Game 4 officials accountable for what happened in Games 1-3.
Forsberg: Fiction. Refs were a nonfactor in the series and largely let the teams play "playoff basketball." Things tend to get chippy this time of year.
McMenamin: Fact. When Evan Turner is allowed to hit LeBron James in the face and it's only called a common foul in Game 1, that sets the tone for the entire series. Boston took whatever leeway it was given and by Game 4, it got out of hand.
Stein: Fiction. The skirmishes involving Olynyk/Love and Perkins/Crowder were unsavory but not uncommon for the playoffs. It happens. Yet when it comes to J.R. and Crowder, sorry, you're not going to convince me that the refs' failure to call a foul on Crowder first somehow offsets how far over the line Smith's reaction was. I blame nothing but Smith's lack of control here.
Windhorst:
Fiction. The series? No. For the game? Probably. I think Tony Brothers should've ejected Perkins, then warned both benches there would be zero tolerance. No double techs, just straight ejections. That may have calmed things down because it was an elimination game. I understand there was some building frustration, but that happens in most playoff series.

Holy overreaction, Marc Stein.

That's what makes it worse, you have a lot of talking heads calling for an extreme and lengthy suspension, it makes you wonder if Silver will cave into that. He's a pushover, this guy is not Stern, where he lays down his own law, and doesn't give a flying fuck how he's perceived when doing it.

Silver might cave into the media's expectations of what the suspension should be.

I don't have a good feeling at all about this. I originally thought it would just be a game, but I am feeling less and less optimistic that will be the case.

Uh oh, JR is gonna be so upset that Fedor graded him so poorly for yesterday's game and added a good tongue lashing as well.

J.R. Smith
Stats: 16 minutes, eight points, 3-8 FG, 2-7 3FG, two steals.
Analysis: Smith's short temper led to an ejection and uncertain playoff future. It also highlighted why New York was desperate to get rid of him.
Smith has been on his best behavior since coming from the Knicks. His redemption story has been nice to see unfold, but it was being written during the good times for the Cavs, the "honeymoon phase."
Adversity came on Sunday and Smith's answer was to take a vicious swipe at an opponent in one of the dirtiest plays of the season. Was Smith pushed in the back by Jae Crowder as the two were fighting for a rebound? He sure was. Should a foul have been called earlier? Absolutely.
However, there's no justifying Smith's blow. It was despicable. There's no place in the game for that kind of behavior and it wasn't a basketball play.
Smith should be embarrassed and the league should come down hard on him. It wasn't showing toughness, it was taking a blatant cheap shot because he couldn't control his emotions well enough in a heated series. That's not a good sign as the postseason progresses. It doesn't matter what else he did on Sunday. He was ejected from a closeout game. That tells the story of his Game 4.
Grade: F

I seriously believe that none of this is Fedor's actual take on what happened. All this seems to be copied and pasted from other peoples articles and twitter opinions.

This will never happen but...............tell me, how many play off games will the "Cs" miss because of Perk and JR?
Why penalize the Cavs TEAM for what happened against a team that is eliminated?
Penalize the Player and not the Team. Why no talk of penalizing Stephens for trying to hurt the Cavs playoff chances in a series they had NO CHANCE of winning?
Why reward the Bulls for stuff they were not even involved in?

He speaks the truth. JR has issues with "losing his cool." This isn't the first time and it probably won't be the last. I would be shocked if the league didn't come down hard on him for yet another cheap shot.

FIVE games? Five games is a lot. I believe Artest got 6-7 for this... and this was a tad similar. But Artest looked like he was aiming.

The thing is, while he'd never admit it, Silver has to think he doesn't really want his ratings cash cow in Lebron to get bounced early because he took out a core player for a series due to suspensions, especially if he knows Love is injured at the same time.

Silver has to know if he hammers JR hard he basically helping to put us in the grave, so that gives me some hope we might get off lighter.

Unless you think JR had eyes in the back of the head and in a split second plane for Crowder to step back, the JR play isn't even remotely the same as what Artest did. Perhaps it's hard to give JR the benefit of the doubt, but there is a somewhat reasonable basketball explanation for what he did. There is no basketball explanation for Artest.

Yeah, this is right. If you look at the play, Crowder pushes him once with extended arms, then pushes him again from his left shoulder which is JR's shoulder away from the basket, and then tries to get over the right shoulder to get inside for rebounding position. If Crowder is there on the right shoulder, the elbow is into his chest just like Barkley was talking about, which happens 50 times per game with no problems. It is the fact that Crowder got further out of position that led to JR's elbow not catching anything to stop it, and hitting his face.

I have no idea how the NBA will handle it, but that is definitely what happened in my view.

Holy overreaction, Marc Stein.

Gotta love that he won't read malicious intent on Olynyk, but he has no problem thinking that JR is a hellspawn thug that needs to be locked up. Methinks a bit of bias might be in play.

Marc Stein, ESPN.com: Fiction. Olynyk has no history of such behavior, and NBA players get tied up in this manner all the time. The video doesn't look great, obviously, but who can step into Olynyk's head and conclusively say it was intentional? Not me.

I still believe he swung back but aiming for the head is nonsense. He didn't look back, he might have wanted to hit him square in the chest for all we know. All these people on tv saying it should be a multiple game suspension is stupid. Even if it has to result in a suspension, 1 game...hell if you feel like he deserves more, fine him as well.

I don't get the league sometimes, I really don't. Stern, would have already announced his decision and wouldn't have let the media dictate it whatsoever.

Sucker punch? He swung his arm wildly to clear space with Crowder BEHIND him. A sucker punch is what Melo did to mardy collins.

If Smith hits Crowder on the arm it's a tech at worst. He just happened to knock that fake tough guy out.

No the kid has history of hitting players violently. He wasn't trying to clear space he was doing what he always does go for a strike.

smh at not a sucker punch. Crowder had no ide that he was going to get hit in the face. Jr smith squared up and faced him when? before he blindsided him with a knockout blow? missed that.

I am saying dont suspend the dude AT ALL. it was DESERVED and a result of a bullshit series. But that was a sucker punch.

Artest would have murdered Crowder out there, I hate Artest but it would have been fun to see Crowder mouthing off to the bench and Artest just mouthing back and Crowder's scared look and shuts up.
