Windy on WKNR this morning:
-The Cavs were aware that they had to spend and they have put themselves in a good position because its a good year to invest in free agents but a bad year to have cap space because now players want the money but the cap is going to zoom higher in a couple of years. Spending on your players now and getting them locked in, they will be better contracts in 2 years. These investments are smart and that is why he is willing to spend all this money. The Cavs will be in a terrific position, its good for business and its terrific for LeBron.
-Kevin Love picked Cleveland because of LBJ, the chance to win and money. He has an opt out after 4 years at age 30 and he can be a free agent again then. Why risk $100M to maybe make an extra $30-40M next year. We haven't seen many of the stars take short deals besides LBJ. Davis, Lillard, Leonard and Butler all took 5. Its hard to turn down that kind of payday.
-None of the injuries the Cavs had were debilitating, they were shoulder injuries and Kyrie broke his knee. The Cavs have the deepest front court in the NBA, Andy, TT, Mozgov, Love. With Kyrie, they need to go out and get a quality backup guard and they have the means and interest to do it. The Cavs had bad luck last year, hopefully next year they don't.
-The TT deal is not done but it will get done. There are some negotiating points they are still going over but he thinks it will happen. With JR, he isn't sure. Afflalo signed a 2 year $16M deal and they are comparable players. JR could use this as a basis for his contract and he doesn't know if JR is worth $8M to the Cavs. Delly is a RFA and the qualifying offer the Cavs gave him is around $2M and he may end up just playing on that contract. Let's see what they can do with the Haywood contract.
-The expectations are that they get back to the NBA Finals, that is a reasonable expectation and the Cavs put themselves in that position. The Cavs believe if they were fully healthy, they would've won that series. Considering that whole team will be back with some more depth and younger legs, why can't they win it next year?
-Yesterday was a humbling day for the Los Angeles Lakers. LMA essentially said "Your presentation wasn't good. I don't want to play with Kobe" you are living like its 2005. Kobe's approach to LMA was "come in here and be my #2" when he is 36 and injured. The Lakers are behind the times with their analytics and their management of the salary cap. One of the reasons LBJ came back was the fact that they were able to put together a good team around him and the Lakers have not done that.
Thanks!
