Well I fell into a rabbit hole after listening to the idiots on 92.3 and looked into possible DeMarcus Cousins trades. Let me preface this by saying I'm not a fan of trading for Cousins right now.
Pretty much the basis of any deal for Cousins would probably consist of:
Iman Shumpert $10,337,079
Channing Frye $7,420,912
Draft Pick(s)
For
Demarcus Cousins $18,063,850
Cavs would actually save $305,859 in salaries along with $1,299,901 in taxes by my calculations, or about $1.6 million total. The repeater taxes are no joke.
I was really curious about possibly adding in Etwaun Moore into the deal somehow. He's due about $8.5 million a year for the next 3 seasons. You can get there by adding in Cedi Osman and Ante Zizic into the deal. That is the only realistic scenario I would see. However, this would lead to an increase in salary of $4,462,826 for this season. But that's not all. That increase would set the Cavs into the next tier of the repeater tax, and would cost them an additional $30,126,839 in taxes alone. That's insanity. Long story short, the Cavs would not be getting Etwaun Moore in any deal with the Pelicans with Cousins. Too bad, I think he'd fit well here.
The other aspect of the deal is the draft picks. Obviously, the Brooklyn pick would have to be involved. However, if I'm the Cavs, I'm doing the absolute best I can to negotiate a top 3 protection, or at least a top 1 protection (shoutout to Neil Olshey, some of you will get this reference). These are the picks that the Cavs have through 2020:
2018 BKN 1st
2018 CLE 1st
2019 CLE 1st (if 11-30)
2020 Miami 2nd
Unfortunately not a ton to work with. The Stepian Rule also throws a wrench into the deal. If we do trade for Cousins, its extremely likely the Cavs will retain that 2019 pick. Therefore I think it should be included. The Stepian Rule then prevents the 2018 Cavs pick from being included. NO's draft picks are far simpler. They have no picks incoming, and their 2018 second rounder outgoing. I think the Cavs would like at least a 2nd back with the picks they're giving up. So in total, this to me is the most realistic trade for the Cavs/Pels with Cousins that I would consider as Cavs:
Cavs receive:
Demarcus Cousins $18,063,850
NOP 2020 2nd Round pick
Pelicans receive:
Iman Shumpert $10,337,079
Channing Frye $7,420,912
2018 BKN 1st Round Pick*
2019 CLE 1st Round Pick (if 11-30)
* Top 1 protected: if the pick falls as #1 pick, NOP receives CLE 2021 1st round pick unprotected and 2020 MIA 2nd round pick
In total, the Cavs would again save about $1.6 million, though would likely fill the Now opened roster spot and the additional tax.
The Cavs draft pick situation isn't ideal, but if the BKN pick is conveyed, this would leave the Cavs with their own 2018 pick, Miami's 2020 pick, and New Orleans 2020 pick. That's just enough for me even if Lebron were to leave. They have enough tradeable players to replenish their draft picks if needed in my opinion (If Dan can swallow his pride - doubtful).
So whether you are for or against trading the pick and/or trading for Cousins, this is how I think it would breakdown. Certainly there's plenty of room for change that we can't predict, especially with Dell Demps. For example, NOP may want Zizic back for that 2nd rounder or something.
Was already looking at these #s and possibilities and figured it was worth posting for anyone else who was curious. Interested to see what everyone's thoughts are on the above scenario
