He was told by Izzo to take Draymond as well. So that's a prime example of sometimes he lets his staff do what they want. But who is to say Draymond is still Draymond if he came here with Byron Scott and Mike Brown as the HC

Grant had said he didn't want more than 2 rookies every year. One of the reasons we didn't end up with more talent was Grant wasn't willing to take enough shots.

At least with Beilein, we shouldn't be worried about bring in too many young players. He is use to bring in a good amount of new guys year in and year out.

It depends on some things, but this might be the best move since draft LeBron. Beilein is, IMO, a top 5 coach in basketball right now. The way that he develops and turned that Michigan program around was nothing short of amazing. To be able to have that type of pull with our organization and players on the team right now is simply awesome and makes me think of Gilbert and Altman maybe slightly different.

I also believe Gansey has a tremendous future if this is the type of relationships that he could create.

Never been more stunned by a woj tweet and I actually LOVE this hire. Always puts out a highly entertaining team that wins and the whole seems to always be greater than the sum of its parts which was crucial since he wasn't paying recruits like the other coaches. That kind of mentality and grit is why he will succeed and why guys who get all of the recruits in college fail in the pro ranks as their individual abilities are exposed (Think Calipari...my god I would've quit if Gilbert hired him)

Now surround him with the 500 assistant coaches that were interviewed and we're off and running for the rebuild. He's older so when he's done he will have groomed a few assistants who can takeover. Might actually operate like a legit organization if this hire works out and Gilbert is patient.

Great point. I've wanted the Cavs to be more like the Spurs as an organization and slowly they seem to be headed in that direction. As good of a coach as Popovich is their organization stresses getting not only talented players but the right personality too - good work ethic and not an over inflated ego. They also stress good fundamentals so I am happy to read comments about Beilein in this regard.

Kobys number 2 was all for this hire. He played for Beilein when he was at WV. I am not saying this isn't Dans choice. But no one can say with 100 percent certainty that it was. People keep bringing up the Michigan connection.

People do realize Gilbert went to Michigan State and not Michigan don't they? It's also the GMs job to get players who fit the coaches system. If they can't work well together thats on them not Dan. Beilein just needs to tell him the type of player he needs.
Gilbert knows Michigan from having been there and doing business there...MSU isn't the only source up north for him,but he would have connections in that state.
No doubt in my mind he's been reaching out to those connections.

I would have hated Izzo hire. I don’t think he could break that yelling in players faces mentality, has a bigger ego, and would relate to pros poorly imo. Beilen is exact opposite personality wise.

When the only weakness people can bring up about his as a coach is age you know its a good hire. But how long will he realistically be here? Hes 66? Gotta pay attention to his assistants which are apparently gonna be NBA guys. Hopefully they get him a good understudy and he instills the right culture in his time here.
Does this mean Longobardi and the rest are gone?

I'm hoping Beilein also adds the ability to develop all of our drafted players so they keep their value. I feel like a major problem with the Cavs is players are boom or bust in terms of development and value. So many assets just wasted because we couldn't keep developing a player to have value when we wanted to trade them.

Danny Green, Joe Harris, and Quinn Cook are players that were on the Cavs roster but we failed to even get value for them. Good organizations don't waste value and convert them to help their team in other ways.

other thing that bugs the crap out of me here: this is such a Dan Gilbert hire.

Why can't Dan remove himself from these sorts of things? Let your GM (who you said will be running the search) make his hire. It messes up the entire dynamic between the two (GM/coach) if your owner hired his guy. So if things start to go sideways, the coach can say, "well, Koby isn't getting the right players" or Koby can say, "he's not using the players we have correctly" everyone gets into "cover thy ass" mode.

I'm not sure why you're assuming this is a Dan Gilbert hire. I get that you hear Michigan and think Gilbert, but he's a Michigan STATE guy with connections to Detroit's professional landscape.

He has no connections to UM as far as I know.

I was shocked they hired someone this morning. I saw college coach and I was underwhelmed.

Thing that I worry about with a college coach is inflexibility. I know some things from college just don't work because in the NBA the shooters are too good, the ball handlers are too good and the bigs are too skilled.

I don't know a lot about this guy, but the things I worry about in regards to college guys don't appear to be a problem with him. He has been successful everywhere and is one of the most respected coaches. His ability to coach both sides of the ball, his ability to connect with players, and his versatility are all major pluses.

I really don't care about his age. 66 used to be a lot older. 71 when his contract ends. I am most concerned that we might fall in love with him and he retires just when the team is becoming relevant.

I think we keep the pick as he adjusts and takes some time to instill his system. He has a lot of teaching to do, and there isn't enough practice time during the season.

I see exactly the type of coach that Sexton needs, I see exactly the guy that can help Cedi take it to the next level, I see a guy who can help Zizic diversify his game especially passing which he has shown flashes of, and a guy that can get to Larry as well and use his playmaking, but hopefully channel it better than Drew could.

I think Kevin will go for it too, and he is also a guy that will benefit from the offense.

There are a lot of things to like. I am pretty positive about this hire especially now that I have done some research. Bring the coach along slowly and keep that pick next year.

Just hope we add one or 2 awesome rookies for this guy to work with.

Here a little look at John Beilein.

I was skeptical about this guy at first, but upon further search and the response around social media, he seems like the Coach the Cavaliers need. I'm hoping he can come in here and change the Cavaliers culture and develop players.

I don't know much about him, but I hope he can correct one of the main problems we had last season. which was arrogant veterans freezing out and shunning our young players.
Drew worked those vet players to get rid of that and it didn't take long.

Perhaps we were interviewing all of those NBA assistant coaches to find Beilein's eventual successor more than to find a head coach. I expect one of them will be named associate head coach or some title that feels like a promotion to coach-in-waiting.
