Some alarming numbers on the Guardian's right-handed hitters, including switch hitters batting right-handed.
Batting average: .205 (last)
Home runs: 13 (last). Next lowest team has 20.
RBI's: 68 (last). Next lowest team (KC) has 118. IOW, our right-handed hitters have 43% fewer RBI's as the second worst team and about 55% less than the average team's RHH's.
wRC+: 61 (last). We're 39% worse than average hitting right-handed.
On-base percentage, slugging percentage, ISO, wOBA, and OPS: Last across the board. However, I found one statistic our right-handed hitters are not last in - strikeout percentage. We're 29th.
However, our right-handed hitters are 18th in line drive percentage. Twelve teams are lower, which suggests we've been pretty unlucky. That being said, we're last in hard hit percentage so a lot of those line drives have been soft line drives. Myles Straw line drives, IOW.
Our right-handed hitters are last in pull percentage and second in oppo percentage. They're going oppo more than anybody except Miami and pulling the ball less than any team. No wonder they're last in HR/FB percentage at 5.7%. Of the 30 teams 23 are over 10% in that category. Our RHH's are wimps - slapping the ball to right field. Bell, Rosario, Straw, Arias - they all go the other way a lot resulting in less than 1 in 17 fly balls leaving the yard. Franmil could hit home runs to right field but none of the guys we have now can do it. I think Bell might have one.
Our RHH's do lead baseball in one category - the percentage of medium hit balls.
Hitters who go oppo a lot should strike out less since they are tracking the ball longer and letting it get deeper into the hitting zone. But the Guardians right-handers are second highest in K percentage despite being second highest in oppo percentage. They're hitting a ton of soft and medium hit balls to right field but still striking out second most often and being last in home run percentage while hitting just .205.
Part of this is the catchers, but that's just one of the nine spots in the order. Bell and Jose are hitting like crap right-handed, Rosario is at .227, Straw .230, Arias .204, and Oscar Gonzalez hit .192 before being sent down. Something needs to be done before next season. Only 68 RBI's in 60 games from right-handed hitters and a .205 BA and .272 OBP isn't going to cut it.
