Slingin' Sammy "Super Soaker" Merrill

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
That shot is smooth as hell.

I keep trying to tell myself there’s no way he can carve out a role on the real squad, but then I just keep seeing Korver when I watch him play.

He’s going to be behind Isaac in the backup rotation, but if there’s an injury or a roster move still left to be made?? Watch out for Sam shooting his way into regular playing time.

He doesn't make mistakes, and his defense seems good. He shut some of these guys down. Real NBA players will give him a harder time, but man, he could play the 1 with Caris at the 2 off the bench. He's so good shooting.

I am sort of mad they didn't try him once in the playoffs just to get some space

I do like him I must admit. He has a skill that I think could be useful with experience. I think he’s a lock to stay on the roster this season and if you’re on the roster you’re gonna get some minutes over the course of the season.

Much rather fill out the roster with players who can get hot from 3 than the Lamar’s of the world personally

I like Merrill myself but let’s be real, if everyone stays healthy he’s no better then the 13/14 guy on this team, and that’s okay. We’re pretty loaded at the Guard position, with that said I hope he gets a lot of Charge run, if nothing else to keep Bates in check, Bates seeing another good shooter on his team, will hopefully makes him understand he don’t or shouldn’t try to do it by himself, Nice his first pro coach will be his in season coach also…..

I just hope Merrill looks decent in practice with the rotation guys. If so it'd really open some flexibility in trades to move off some of our deep guard depth chart without as much fall off. I'd love to be shopping around Okoro +Rubio and pick for a long wing because we think Merrill and Porter Jr or whoever can step in and play 12 minutes a game without stinking.

In today's game, having another guy who can shoot like Merrill is a plus. When teams get behind, they can run 3-4 3-point shooters and get back in the game fast. He surprised me but he's a late bloomer and you might note he went on one of those Mormon missions that last two years after college which pushed back his development, so he would be where he is, development wise, at 25 if he didn't go on the mission.

The issue with Merrill is size. He can't parade as a forward like Korver could.

On this team, there simply aren't minutes at the guard position.

Size is less of an issue in today's game than it was just 10 years ago. He is a lot quicker than Korver to make up for that.

So are the guys he'd have to match up with. I don't agree that size is 'less of an issue' for players playing the 1-3 spots. If anything, the increase in switching defenses has favored larger guards.

Until injuries happen. When they occur having a pure shooter on the bench will be helpful

If enough injuries happen to Garland, Mitchell, Okoro, LeVert, Rubio, Jerome, and Strus that force Merrill into a large role, then the team is screwed regardless.

Doesn't mean there won't be a role in the future, but today, he's simply blocked by way too many guys.
