Welcome to the Cavaliers Coaster -- price of admission: pain and joy. Up and down, we go, as the Cavs have alternated win and losses consistently for the last month. They have not won or lost more than two in a row over the last 17 games. After a disappointing loss in Houston, the Cavs rollercoaster works it way back up with a win in Indianapolis. The Cavs were 0-2 coming into the night allowing 120+ points in both previous outings against the Pacers. Tonight, the Cavs won and allowed just 103 points. The Pacers only scored less three times in 2024. At the start, it didn’t look like it was going that way. The Pacers scored 34 points in the first quarter and shot 60.9% FG. In the following three quarters the Pacers scored 69 points and...
The Cavaliers three-game road trip ends in Indiana against the 38-30 Pacers, who are in 6th place just 0.5 games ahead of Philadelphia and Miami as they fight to avoid the play-in tournament. Obviously every game is huge for the Pacers from here on out. The Pacers are 21-14 at home and 2-0 against the Cavs this year. However, both games were in the first week of the season and both teams have changed a lot since then. The Pacers traded for PF Pascal Siakam and sent out Bruce Brown and Buddy Hield. They also lost Bennedict Mathurin to a season-ending injury nine days ago. Those three players combined to score 41 points per game. Since trading for Siakam the Pacers are 14-13. He hasn’t exactly taken them to the next level. They were...
With two days off following one of their most impressive wins of the season the Cavs’ road trip continues with a visit to Houston for a Saturday matinee. This game will be a rematch of the Cavs’ 135-130 overtime win in Cleveland three months ago. The Cavs were missing Garland and Mobley that night but Mitchell scored 37 points and Merrill chipped in 19 off the bench. Center Alperen Sengun had a line of 24/8/6 in 31 minutes for Houston. This time around the Cavs will have Garland (but not Mobley or Strus) and the Rockets will not have Sengun, who is out with an ankle injury suffered six days ago. Sengun leads the Rockets in scoring and rebounding and is second in assists. He is an emerging star in his third year. The Rockets have...
If this is how the Cavs are going to play on their 14-game, 13 slate to end the season then it’s going to be a pretty good run. It may not be a stretch to say it was one of the Cavs better all-around games on the season. Donovan Mitchell was welcomed back after a seven-game absence to one of Darius Garland’s best performances this season. His game score (30.2) was the highest of the season. Garland had two 5+ assist quarters on his way to 11 assists on the game. After the game Mitchell said he thought Garland had one of his best games, especially managing the game. There have been times Garland has been criticized for his turnovers, or how the offense has looked under his guidance, but Mitchell’s analysis was correct. The offense was...
The Cavaliers, with a 6-8 record since their 9-game winning streak was stopped by Philadelphia on Feb. 23, hit the Big Easy to take on the red-hot New Orleans Pelicans, winners of 13 of their last 17. The Pelicans are 39-25 overall and 18-12 at home. These teams played in Cleveland on Dec. 21 with the Pels emerging with an easy 123-104 win. The Cavs were without Garland, Mitchell, and Mobley while the Pels did not have Zion Williamson. This time around Zion is playing and combined with the hulking Jonas Valanciunas the Cavs are likely to get pushed around in the paint. The Pelicans have had two days off and are at home, healthy, and well-rested. In the last two weeks they are 5-1 and lead the NBA with a point differential of...
The Cavs have a competition problem of late. For as much as they’ve played up to the competition with wins against Boston, Minnesota, and Dallas, they’ve also played down with losses to Chicago, Atlanta and Brooklyn. Good teams are consistent, and the Cavs are not consistent right now. Sometimes teams have hot nights, it happens. The Nets made five three-pointers in the first half, and then proceeded to go 13-22 in the second half and score 44 third quarter points. Yes, these Nets… 44 points… on the second night of a back-to-back. Up to the third quarter the Cavs had pulled ahead but they trailed for most of the game up until that point. There were injuries, but if they can beat Minnesota at home with these injuries, they can beat...
