Browns 2023 UDFA Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Getting Hickman as an UDFA when he was a guy that could've been a nice late round pick was a home run... Think there's a really good chance he and/or McAllister make the roster given their versatility and lack of anyone behind Delpit/Thornhill..

With the guaranteed money given to Phelps and Diabate, there's a good chance they are added to the PS with Diabate having an outside shot at making the 53-man LB room...

Phelps may not have been drafted because of his size but has really good movement and pass-rush skills as a sub-package rusher...

Pulled this from the SI article on Hall's pro day:

He ran a sub 4.5 forty-yard dash, had a 37-inch vertical jump, which was the best among all participants that day, a 10-foot, 10-inch broad jump and he had 18 reps on the bench press.
The one thing that gave me a bad taste was not getting a rb. . Supposedly the guys they liked went before we had a shot to get any of them .

Supposedly they would have drafted Zach Evans had he not gone earlier .

We are def one injury away of having a very very thin rb room .

I wouldn't be surprised to see a veteran free agent brought in to push John Kelly during the preseason.

I wish we could've scooped up Jordan Mims, RB out of Fresno State as a UDFA signing before Buffalo got him.

Sean Tucker obviously is the most talented, but with his medical red flag, I just wish him luck in Tampa. Baltimore got someone I thought could've gotten drafted in Keaton Mitchell.

And I swear if Andre Carter develops into something in Minnesota, I'm never going to forgive Andrew Berry.

Yeah McKinnon went back to kc. I really don’t like any of the vets that are left to be honest. Not sure Ford is an ideal third down back to catch passes either. I go like him but not sure he is a great fit for that role. Too bad Kareem Hunt is no longer worth a look .

For reference, 250K guaranteed is more than Maurice Hurst, Wes Martin and Michael Dunn got signing with the Browns this offseason as free agents.
Bababooey is going to make the 53-man roster.

I was pronouncing Mohamoud Diabate completely differently...

Another 250K guarantee.
I want to understand the UDFA game more. Like is there a limit to the guarantee? How does this all go down? I feel like AB is consistently getting some of the most potential from this crew as if he ran an analysis and decided that $250k is less than expected value or some shit.

Like is there a situation where if I have a 7th round grade that I would rather be undrafted? Sure you can then pick your team, that’s huge. But is there a financial aspect w these guaranteed signing boners?

There's no limit to the guarantee. A team can offer $0 guaranteed or fully guarantee the contract if they're so inclined.

In a lot of cases, especially if a player is not confident that he will make the team, it is beneficial to be undrafted than to be picked late since draft pick contracts are slotted.

For example...

Last year's 7th rounder Isaiah Thomas got $115K guaranteed on his four-year rookie contract. Now he ended up making way more than that (850K) because he made the roster, but had he gotten cut, he would have only walked away with $115K.

The Browns gave at least two of their UDFA's this cycle 250K guaranteed.
