CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians have come to terms with left-hander Rafael Perez. The team and Perez were scheduled to exchange arbitration figures today.

Perez signed for $795,000 with a $25,000 All-Star bonus. He was the only Indian eligible for arbitration.

The Indians have not gone to arbitration with a player since 1991.

Perez is coming off the worst season in his career. He was considered one of the top set-up men in the American League before that. After opening last season with the Indians, he was optioned twice to Class AAA Columbus.

In 54 appearances for the Indians, Perez went 4-3 with a 7.31 ERA. He struck out 32, walked 25 and allowed 66 hits in 48 innings. The opposition hit .335 against him. Left-handers hit .412 and right-handers .277 against him.

Perez allowed two earned runs in 16 appearances at Columbus. He had a 0.83 ERA, but he never could carry to Cleveland.

While Perez struggled, right-hander Chris Perez and left-hander Tony Sipp became the Indians top set-up men. Rafael Perez is going to need a strong spring training to get his old job back.

On the Indians current payroll of players signed to big-league contracts, Perez ranks seventh behind Mike Redmond, who signed an $850,000 deal last week. The Indians are slashing payroll from last year's total of $81.5 million to between $50 and $60 million this year.

Perez appeared to find something in winter ball. Pitching for Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Republic this offseason, he went 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA in six appearances, including five starts. He allowed one earned run, walked 10, struck out 25 and allowed 14 hits in 27 innings. The opposition hit .156 against him.

Here's hoping he earns this extra $25K.

Now let the negative comment parade begin.

I'd be happy if any of the team makes the All-star game.
