James, Brand named NBA Players of Week

January 30, 2006
NEW YORK (Ticker) - After leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a perfect week, forward LeBron James on Monday was named as the NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

James was virtually unstoppable, averaging 33.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.3 steals per game as Cleveland posted a 4-0 record.

James posted 44 points, including a career-high tying 32 points in the second half, 11 rebounds and seven assists to help rally Cleveland from 18 points down to top Phoenix, 113-106, on Sunday. The last player to post at least 44 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in a game was Hakeem Olajuwon on March 23, 1996.

In the Cavaliers' 106-97 win in Atlanta on January 25, James scored 38 points and had nine rebounds and six assists. He posted at least 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists in each game during the week.

This is James' second weekly award this season and fifth of his career. He joins Elton Brand, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Steve Nash and Dwyane Wade as the only players in the league to win the award multiple times this season.

James also was named the NBA's Eastern Conference Player of the Month in November 2005.

Brand, a forward for the Los Angeles Clippers, was named Western Conference Player of the Week. He averaged 24.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 blocks in leading the Clippers to a 4-0 record.

Brand began the week by scoring 28 points to help the Clippers overcome a 19-point second-half deficit and beat the Golden State Warriors, 96-93, on January 22.

Brand also hit 14-of-21 field goals and posted his 25th double-double of the season with 33 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Clippers to a 105-87 win at Denver on Friday, which snapped the Nuggets seven-game winning streak. The following night, Brand scored 17 points and had eight rebounds along with a season-high eight assists to lead the Clippers to their largest margin of victory this season in a 112-79 win over Denver.

This is the third weekly honor for Brand and the fifth of the career for Brand, who also was named the NBA's Western Conference Player of the Month in November 2005.

Other nominees for Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki, Detroit's Chauncey Billups, Tracy McGrady of Houston, Miami's Shaquille O'Neal, Milwaukee's Michael Redd, Philadelphia's Allen Iverson and Seattle's Ray Allen.

allstar starter for sure. that'll make the season a success.

excellent chance at making the playoffs.

home court provides a better than average shot at winning in the first round.

probably little chance at advancing past the second round.

what could be better than that?

we're #4!

we're #4! (in our conference)

It has been a great week or so from LeBron. He has stepped up, and finally teammates players are stepping up as well and not just Ilgauskas.

A few player of the week and month awards, all star starter, NBA all first team, playoff appearance, and further self improvement. Not a bad year.

Moohead is talking about the nomination on the podcast. They're talking about how Lebron ran down Barbosa (who is considered in the top 5 fastest players in the league, I guess) from behind for that block, then drove fullcourt in 6 seconds for the dunk. This will probably be remembered as 1 of his greatest plays of all time. Good stuff!

Edit: could move this to "How did he do that?" thread

How did Kobe not get Western CPOTW????

I saw the play, and it was good, but it def wasnt one of the best of all time.

Maybe one of the best of this year, but people went wayyyyyyy over board on how good that play really was.

A Mac I agree with you on this one.

It was definitely a terrific play and it happened very quickly but neither the block or the dunk were all that spectacular. Either way its is definitely getting a little too much attention.

I guess its just how effortlessly and quickly LeBron did it all. Sometimes he still looks like hes playing with those highschoolers.

True the block and the dunk werent spectacular but u combined that all in one play and how quickly it happend and thats what made it special.

It sure was fun to watch in context though because it threw the momentum of the game and left Barbosa scratching his head!
