Maurice Clarett Blogging From Prison

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Thanks for the correction. In any case, I know from watching the lock-up documentary that a lot of these guys have television privileges. Some of them even get to play board games and do various activities amongst others.

It always pisses me off.
Yep, tv, chess, checkers, dominos, cards.

I've heard stories some local jails are actually worse then county jails or the penitentory, I would highly doubt that tho. I've only been in a local jail for a few days, it's not that bad but I knew there was an end in sight and only a couple days. I'd probably wanna kill myself if I knew I'd be sitting in the pen for 15 years.

I've also heard stories of people smoking weed while in the pen. They get to work jobs in the kitchen and such and be somewhat productive. Really the only outlet you have is reading and some tv.

I sure as hell wouldn't wanna do time in the pen or federal pound me in the a$$ prison.

I agree with what you're saying about the violent offenders and such. I'm sure they're locked down for most of the day, i.e in their cell. i think the worst is having the lights on all day and no sense of time.

I know some work release places, where you pay to stay the nights and weekends to get locked up when you're not working have internet access.

Prisoners should have shorter sentences if they agree to do manual labor and contribute to the GDP. Tired of our tax dollars being wasted on a system that doesn't help, might as well try my idea.

What are your thoughts on whether prison rehabilitates prisoners or not?

It really depends on the prisoner's outlook on the whole situation, what crime they committed, age, what institution they are in, and programs availiable to them. Very many factors really.

I know what point you're trying to make here Jigo, so let's face it, a lot of prison's don't exist to rehabilitate. The "prison business" has become very profitable. Low operation costs combined with mandatory labor make it so. Therefore more bodies equals more money.

Without getting to in depth on that subject I will say you are right, most prisoners probably don't come out of their situation any better. But like I stated, it depends on their outlook on the situation. I was merely refrencing my own experience.

However, just because our prison systems are flawed, doesn't mean we shouldn't allow convicts the opporunity of rehabilitation. Privileges are an intrical part of that process. Denying someone the ability to socialize or relieve stress can have severe detrimental effects to one's mentality (Why it's used as a punishment).

At the most basic level for the prison, without privileges to take away, do you really have any control? If there is nothing for the prisoner to lose, there is everything to gain. That could be a very dangerous situation.

Great points. And give me a little credit here, :chuckles:

I wasn't trying to use you to make a point and didn't necessarily have a point without knowing the reality of what it's like in prison. I appreciate the info and I've never actually thought of prison as a business before, but that's a very interesting way to look at it.

IMO once you've molested a child, committed rape, committed an act of terrorism or otherwise murdered someone in cold blood you lose your rights to enjoy freedom of any kind.

I'm thinking we just give them one of the Dakotas or even Boston(might cost a few hundred grand tops). If that's too contraversial for Americans we could give them part of that worthless country Canadia(in return we'd promise not to make fun of them any more or something). The we just put a big wall around the area we pick.

Then we could sell hunting trips. People could chase down the molestors and rapists in jeeps with sniper rifles....or even helicopters. The real rich folk could even rent tanks. Then we could televise it and have 3 different judges each week critiquing the hunts...cool people like Chuck Norris, Arnold, Bruce Campbell, Christopher Walken, Robert Deniro and Mr T.

Think "Escape From New York" meets "The Running Man" meets "American Idol". It would makes billions and rid the country of the molestors, rapists and murderers.

Off to the "start a business" thread...:runs:
