Rays DFA John Meloan

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Very interesting. I wondered what was the deal with this guy. The trade didn't make any sense. Maybe he has some character flaw that noone is reporting on or something. Anyway, I hope we end up getting some scrap of value out of this one.

He wont be back, the fact that we traded him for a player that is 32 and has been on 10 other teams tells me there was something they didnt like about him.

Didn't we just release the guy we got in the trade for Meloan anyway? I don't see us getting Moloan back. If we got rid of the guy that we traded him for we obviously weren't high on him anyway.

So we traded Meloan to Tampa Bay for Abreu..

We released Abreu..

Abreu signs back with Tampa Bay..

Tampa Bay now released Meloan..

So, what was the point of this trade again?

. . . and we might resign Meloan in the off-season? WTF? I'm stumped.

According to Realgm, the Rays acquired Greg Zaun from the Orioles, and to make room for Zaun, they DFA Meloan. I could see Shapiro getting him back since he liked him so much in the Blake deal.

They liked him in the Blake deal but they soured on him once they got him. He was mediocre to awful at Buffalo. When you get passed up for a recall by guys like Greg Aquino, Luis Vizcaino, Matt Herges, Matt Gosling, and Tomo Ohka, then it is time to find another team to try out for. Good luck to him where ever he lands- probably back at Durham.

Looked to me like the team was trying to clear a 40-man spot for a reliever on the bigleague club. I almost have to think that they were ready to DFA Meloan and went shopping him to see what kind of reliever they could get to try in the pen and decided to take a shot at Abreu. Abreu is a bit of an enigma, though- all those Ks at AAA but he just gets destroyed in the bigs. Not defending the logic, but this is what it looked like to me.
