5. LUKE WYPLER, Ohio State (6-2 ½, 302, 5.08, 5-6): Third-year junior. “Some of our guys really like him and some of them don’t,” said one scout. “He’s not real big, but what he can do is run … when you see him pull.” Backed up Josh Myers in 2020 and moved into the lineup in ’21 when Harry Miller was injured. “I was surprised he came out,” a second scout said. “I don’t think he was on their radar to come out but he’s done a good job and the athletic ability shows up. He’s got a high ceiling. Myers was more of a sure thing coming out. He played longer at Ohio State. Myers is more physically strong, has more power to his game.” Started all 26 games the past two seasons. “Big-time overachiever,” a third scout said. “Seventh round or free agent.” Wonderlic of 26. Arm length of 31 5/8 was the shortest of the top seven centers. “You know what?” a fourth scout said. “He is what he is. He’s not going to get any bigger. He plays like a little pumped-up soft guy. There’s a degree of tightness to his movement skill. He’s not a fluid athlete. But he’s (very) smart and he’s got great toughness and intangibles. He won’t be like (Corey) Linsley.” From Montvale. N.J. “Saw nothing there,” a fifth scout said. “Competitive guy, smart, but very limited athletically. No pop. Struggles to move. A get-in-the-way guy. This guy isn’t even as good as Myers.”

PFF ranked him #54 prospect overall in this draft. He earned overall grades of 81.6 and 87.4 in his two seasons as a starter. There will be questions at the next level because of his arm length, but he was effective against great college competition.

Ohio State version of Nick Harris.

While I don’t disagree there is opportunity in the strength department Harris is a unique case of weakness and I’m not sure Wypler is so physically inferior that it’ll end his career the way Harris’ did.

Talked to a scout friend of mine who covers the Big Ten for an NFL team and I figured was familiar with Wypler. Said much of what has already been said here, but made a very interesting and intriguing comp: Paul Pierce.

I think Nick Harris has gotten a little more hate around here than is justified.

He played quite well in the only actual NFL game he ever played at center.

Yeah he was terrible at right guard as a rookie, but this new guy Wypler would be terrible at guard too. They're centers only.

I just don't think Harris is big/strong enough. I don't know who he played against in his lone game at center but feels like every time I see him he's getting pushed back into the QB.

Maybe Wypler isn't the guy either - we'll see.

Out of curiosity I compared their measurables. Harris has longer arms by half an inch. That was the big knock on Wypler. Wypler is the same weight and two inches taller at the draft, but Harris has lost ten pounds since then. Hopefully Wypler can keep more weight on without losing his athleticism.
