HOUSTON -- A former NBA star was arrested Friday for allegedly possessing an illegal substance, officials told KPRC Local 2.

Shawn Kemp, 36, was arrested in Houston early Friday morning and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Kemp allegedly had two ounces or less of the drug in his possession.

Kemp was booked into the Harris County jail and released a short time later on $500 bond.

Kemp's court appearance is scheduled for July 28.

Kemp retired from the NBA in 2003 and now resides in Houston.

The Seattle Sonics drafted Kemp with the 17th pick in the 1989 NBA draft. Kemp played for the Supersonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trailblazers and Orlando Magic during his 14-year career. Kemp appeared in six NBA All-Star games and was a member of the gold-medal winning Dream Team II at the 1994 World Championships of Basketball.

Obviously didn't want his career back that badly. No sympathy for this clown.

what a moron....i believe Denver was really gonna let him have s hot considering they let Elson walk and might trade Evans

but nooooo

cant stay away from the drugs

dude you have like 100 children ...learn how to be a decent human being and take care of them and dont do drugs for a while

Unbelievable, especially for the amount of work he put in getting back into shape. Addiction is a powerful thing :( Sucks, I was looking forward to following him at Denver.

Eh, almost everybody smokes weed in the NBA. This wont stop teams from looking at him, if they were.

If it were crack, then it would hav ebeen an issue.

Kemp will never make it back..no one cares.

If it were crack, he wouldn't be as much of a fat **** as he is right now either.

But he'd be reeeeeal itchy!

Kemp was on the verge of possibly perpetrating a huge fraud on some gullible NBA GM. Looks like the good guys one on this one. Shame on you Shawn. The NBA isn't a smoker's club.

Im sure a lot of the players smoke weed. I believe they changed the drug testing policy recently, so maybe the players are cutting down. Yeah this hurts Kemp's image a little, but lets not group marijuana in with hardcore drugs like crack and heroin. Actually, id probably rather have a player that was a pot head, rather than an alcoholic.

There are also reports that Jesus used cannibis. Im not saying its absolutely true, but its out there...

Claims of drug use by biblical figures surprisingly have susbtance,

Seattle Times - In his first public comments since being arrested for drug possession, Shawn Kemp told The Seattle Times there was marijuana in his truck on Friday.

He also claimed that he has not used drugs since April 2004, and that he would take a drug test anytime. Kemp still believes he can return to the NBA, and he doesn't believe this latest controversy will affect his chances at a comeback.

"I don't think it's going to hurt me on playing, but from the fan's standpoint, it definitely hurts me," Kemp said. "Because people are tired of hearing about this stuff. I'm tired of hearing about it, man. In all honesty, this one here probably affected me more than the last one did because I know what I've done since."

You should try it sometime, might open up your mind...:chuckles: Cannibis is lumped into the "drugs" label, and is assumed "bad" like other more dangerous drugs. Notice how they separate alcohol from the drug label, often saying alcohol & drugs. Both weed and alcohol are drugs, and both are "bad" if abused, but IMO marijuana is "safer" than alcohol, a socially acceptable drug.
