this is awful, so tragic.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers player Lamar Odom's 6½-month-old son has died, a spokesman for the team said Thursday.

Jayden Odom died Wednesday night, apparently suffocating while sleeping in his crib in New York, according to John Black.

"Lamar is very distraught," Black said. "Both he and the baby's mother are asking that people respect their privacy at this time."

Jayden was born Dec. 15. Odom has two older children -- a son and a daughter.

The 26-year-old Odom came to the Lakers two years ago in the trade that sent Shaquille O'Neal to the Miami Heat. Odom averaged 14.8 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 80 games for the Lakers last season and 19.1 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists in their first-round playoff series against the Phoenix Suns.

I can't see how he could get charged for anything...

A lot of the time babies roll around in their sleep and end up on their stomach.. Which, as you know, their mouth is on the same side and sometimes suffocate from the sheets. So, they don't really get as much air as they can...

Does that make sense to you?

It also could because of sleep apneia... Where the babys' tongue [while he is snoring] rolls back in his throat and ends up suffocating him.

Hope that helps and makes sens...

^yea, thats what i figured, i didnt know if there was some sorta wreckless endagerment or some nonsense like that, i was asking because i simply didnt know, and it would be outrageous for anything to happen.

I can't imagine what it would have been like to wake up in the morning and visit your baby's crib to find your child dead.

I would be completly devistated. Poor Lamaar. It might take him a very long long time to get over this.

Well unless he shook the baby or hurt it in any way, than I can't see him getting in any kind of trouble...

It's just a really sad case for the guy and his wife... I can't imagine what it feels like.

There's no way Lamar can be at fault for this, he's rich chances are the kid was sleeping in a freaking state of the art crib, rolled over and just didn't have the strength to roll himself back..

It's sad, they need to make something to prevent this kind of thing from happening, whether its a sensor in their pajama showing they are on their stomache or something..

I'm not saying this happened in this specific case, but if the child DID roll over and suffocate on a sheet it would be the fault of an ignorant care giver (ie. whoever puts the child to bed). Parenting books for some time have been saying don't put blankets (or anything else like stuffed animals) in your child's crib until they're 1 year old, to prevent that kind of thing. If you're a parent you need to educate yourself. Any good parent would. I'm sure they wouldn't get charged with anything though. For the most part, it's not illegal to be ignorant.

He will not be charged with anything. This is a bogus and mean spirited thread. The man just lost his son, and it can happen to any kid any time. Between the ages of 0 and 6 kids are dangerous to themselves and even the most vigilant parents can and do lose them.

Often a tragedy like this also leads to marital breakups and other disruption. The Odoms are going to struggle for a while with this one.

Say a prayer for Lamar, he is going to need it....

True, but children die every day b/c their parents were ignorant on child safety. My comments are not directed at Odom, as we have no clue what happened in his case. We should not pass judgement on him. My comments are aimed at the ignorant parents who could of easily prevented the death of their children had they even tried to educate themselves.

Regardless of the cause, losing a child is one of the most terible things for a person to have to go through. The parents of the ones were it could of been easily prevented are to be pittied even more than the rest. How bad would that be knowing that you could of prevented the death of your child?

Ignorant parents may anger me, but I still feel sorry for the ones who suffer this tragedy.

At any rate, if feeling that it is very bad when parent ignorance leads to child death that could of otherwise been avoided is "mean spirited", then I guess I'm "mean spirited".
