Judge to make sanity ruling in Jeff Reardon robbery case

A judge, not a jury, will decide whether former Major League Baseball pitcher Jeff Reardon was legally insane when he robbed a Palm Beach Gardens jewelry store on Dec. 26.
On Friday, Circuit Judge Stephen Rapp granted Reardon's request for a non-jury trial. The facts are not in dispute, according to lawyer Mitchell Beers, who said four mental health experts agree Reardon didn't know what he was doing as a result of the interaction of numerous medications.

In June, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that Reardon, 50, of Palm Beach Gardens, planned to rely on a voluntary intoxication/insanity defense. At the time of the incident, he was taking a dozen medications for psychiatric problems related to the 2004 overdose death of his 20-year-old son, according to court documents. Two weeks before the robbery, Reardon underwent angioplasty.
He's accused of telling employees at Hamilton Jewelers in The Gardens mall that he had a gun and wanted valuables. Reardon then apologized to an officer who stopped him in the mall parking lot afterward. He held a bag containing $170.
Sharply dressed in a dark suit, Reardon didn't speak after Friday's hearing, but his lawyer said Reardon is doing well and continuing therapy. He coaches baseball for 16-year-olds in Palm Beach Gardens.
Reardon, who's in the top 10 on the all-time saves list, helped the Minnesota Twins nab the 1987 World Series. He spent 16 years playing for a number of big league teams, ending his career in 1994 when the New York Yankees released him.
I watched SC last night and from what I remember Reardon got off from reason of temporarily insane. I guess he was on 12 different meds and started hallucinating and going nuts. Poor fella.
