Because the Lakers are still in win now mode, which makes a high first round draft pick damn near useless to them.

For a rebuilding team such as the Cavs, that pick could be gold.

Nationally, the Lakers have just a bit more support than the Cavs...

And the only team(s) the Lakers may have stolen from are those that may have also had interest in Sessions. If I put something up for sale on Ebay, the winning bidder has only beaten the other bidders; nobody's stolen shit from me.

Lakers never have to worry about building through the draft, they attract players of need every year and have for a long time.

99.9% of people on national chat rooms probably haven't ever seen Ramon Sessions play basketball. Seriously.

Also, many nationally don't seem to know that Sessions can opt out and would have left after the season. I'd gladly take a #1 even if it's in the 20's instead of Sessions only being here for 25 more games as a Cav.

Perception is reality, and in this case both franshises perception is that they each got what they wanted. Market will always dictate value. The Cavs did just fine. What good was Sessions to us for the next couple months? His value to us, given his guaranteed opt out next season, was minimal. The value we get from another first rounder in a decent draft, although dependant upon how said draft pick pans out, is much greater. That same pick, to the LAL, is nowhere near as valuable as Sessions. The LAL are in win now mode. Their core is getting old, their window is closing, and PG was probably their biggest weakness.
    This is a win-win.

The Lakers were doing cartwheels to get rid of Walton's contract. They are likely to amnesty Artest after the season, and suddenly they don't have quite the albatross contracts around that they used to. Walton's deal made Laker fans insane if you look at their message boards because he was totally dead money.

So we can swap the Heat pick next yr for the LA pick ?

Nice, am guessing swaps are not protected right ?

Unclear so far. The Heat pick is lottery protected, so if the Heat finish that badly, the Cavs would have to wait until the next year to have a chance to get that pick.

Correction from earlier: In Lakers-Cavs trade, it is Cavs who have right to swap Heat pick they own with Lakers pick in 2013.
That little caveat makes this a much better deal. I approve of this trade.

Cavs have right to trade 2013 Heat pick to Lakers, if Lakers' pick is better. @NotTheFakeJDM. Not protected.
From Sam Amico. Apparently the Lakers pick next year is unprotected. That allows us to dream up some pretty sweet scenarios.

So what happens if the Lakers trade their pick next year? Or does this not allow them to do that?
