The NBA Trade Deadline is under one week away – Thursday, February 8. As the buzzer rings at 3 p.m. (ET), rosters will be final sans buyout players becoming available. The Cavs are approximately $3 million under the luxury tax threshold, and still have ~$3 million available in their non-taxpayer mid-level exception and ~$2 million from their bi-annual exception. Depending on how the deadline shakes out, the Cavs could be active on the buyout market – like targeting Danny Green last year. Although, the mid-level exception may be used on a CRAIG! Porter Jr multi-year deal which has been a staple during Cavs President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman’s tenure -- converting young, undrafted players to late season cost effective...
Winners of 12 of their last 13 and 17 of 21, the Cavs finish their season series against San Antonio with a road game against the 10-39 Spurs, who are 5-20 at home. These teams met in Cleveland a month ago and the Cavs emerged with a hard fought 117-115 win. The Cavs were up by 13 with 2:42 to go but Pops dialed up a surprise full court press that discombobulated the Cavs, resulting in an 11-0 Spurs run to close the game. The Cavs hung on for the 2-point win. The Cavs seem to play their best against the strongest teams and play down to the competition against weak teams, which we just saw in close wins over Detroit and Memphis. The Spurs, like the Pistons, have been playing better lately, winning 3 of their last 8 games and losing by...
It’s only fitting that in Memphis, the home of the “Grit & Grind”, the Cavs had to develop a little grit and grind to get out of town with a win. The game was a tale of two halves—the Cavs were outscored by 7 in the first half, then proceeded to outscore the Grizzlies by 14 in the second half. After a sleepy start, the Cavs woke up and played more like the team that is 16-4 in their last 20 games. Let’s just burn the first half tape. 9 turnovers, only 13 3PA and just an overall stagnant, lackadaisical first half showing. The Cavs didn’t play terrible and the Grizzlies didn’t play great but when you account for half of the Grizzlies roster being in the G-League this year, it puts things into perspective. One of the things that defined...
Having finished January with an 11-2 record for the month, the Cavs head south for a back-to-back in Memphis against the Grizzlies, who are 18-29 on the season. The Grizzlies have an extremely odd home/away split as they are 13-13 away and 5-16 at home. The Grizzlies have had two days off while the Cavs played last night in Cleveland and had to fly in late. The Grizzlies have been decimated by injuries, starting with All-Star point guard Ja Morant being out for the year. Morant was averaging 25 ppg before going down after just nine games. Their second leading scorer is Desmond Bane at 24.4 points - he is also out. Marcus Smart, averaging 14.5 ppg is out and Luke Kennard, averaging 10.6 ppg, is “doubtful”. So four of their top five...
The Cavs were back to full strength for the first time in almost two months, and the Detroit Pistons almost played spoilers. Playing some sneaky good basketball of late, the Pistons, winners of two of their last three, pushed the Cavs to the brink but thanks to 45 by #45 the Cavs were able to prevail. First things first, it’s good to be back and healthy. With that, it may take a little bit of time to look like a well-oiled machine. Garland was no stranger to finding his shot settling in for 7-12 from the field and 2-6 from three-point range. He was uber efficient inside the arc going 5-6. Despite this he was a -16 for the night. More on this later. Like Garland, Mobley was limited to the 20 minute range and was somewhat productive in...
