The 2013 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
EDIT: I'm apparently wrong.

Glad they won, but this happens too often and could bite OSU in the ass against better teams. Craft has done this on numerous occasions. Tries to take over by himself, completely phases out DeShaun Thomas and puts up horrible shot after horrible shot late in the game.

With the emergence of Sam Thompson, he's the 4th best offensive player on the team behind Thomas, Thompson and Ross, and yet he seemingly took every shot in the last few minutes.

OSU is going to be in a tough spot against Arizona. They have great size in the post which means OSU will be forced to play Williams and Ravenel big minutes. Not digging that game from a match-up perspective.

Yeah that is going to be a very tough game. Arizona was a top 5 team at one point.

Except it is

We'll settle this:

To gain legal guarding position:
To establish an initial legal guarding position on the player with the ball:
a. The guard shall have both feet touching the playing court. When the guard jumps into position initially, both

feet must return to the playing court after the jump, for the guard to attain a legal guarding position.

b. The guard’s torso shall face the opponent.

c. No time and distance shall be required.

d. When the opponent with the ball is airborne, the guard shall have attained legal guarding position

before the opponent left the playing court.

(Exception: Rule 4-35.7)

To apply the charge circle:
The restricted area is defined as the area bounded by the outer edge of the restricted
area arc, which has a 3-foot radius measured from the center of the basket and
extending to the face of the backboard (See court diagram in Rule 1). A secondary
defender is considered to be in the restricted area when any part of either foot is in
or above this area.

So yes, Craft doesn't need to be touching the line to be inside the circle. If his heel is above the line, he's in the restricted area.

Team of destiny!!! :chuckles:

Thursday's game is going to be brutal. They need to be firing on all cylinders if they want any shot at beating Arizona.

Personnel wise I agree it's a tough match up, but I think when you consider the familiarity between Matta and Miller, an ugly game seems likely IMO.

I think an ugly game favors Ohio State.

If there's any team left in this tourney that is good at grind-it-out affairs, it's gotta be Ohio State.

Craft needs to make better decisions than he did today and hit the shots he normally hits (those free throws really killed this team). Thomas needs to put in at least 20 and Ross needs to assert himself off the bench. Thompson needs to keep up his strong play, as does Ravenel (he was a real non factor today but for the most part he has been providing at least a few points and rebounds every game and hasn't been dragging the team down).

Williams needs to be nailed to the bench. He brings very little to this team on either side of the ball.

I'm excited for the game, but I am also expecting another nail biter.

Regarding the Craft call, that call was so close and is extremely tough to make. We're talking if his heel is on the ground, then the part of his heel is probably touching part of the line. Do you know how hard it is to project someone's foot to the ground on a bang-bang play?

It is what it is. It's a close call and it had to go one way. The refs were putrid on both sides today.

I thought the charge call was pretty clear cut, but it's not what decided the game. Like you said, refs were bad both ways.

Plus, Iowa State turned the ball over a ton and had a chance to get the last shot of the game if they grab that rebound with 30 seconds left.

Was a make up call after that crappy call on Shannon Scott that gave Iowa State the lead in the first place.

There's no point arguing the difficulty of the call. Of course it's difficult to call these plays. Likely, the ref looked at the line when Craft gained position, and didn't see a foot on it. Him taking the time to figure out if any part of Craft's body penetrated an imaginary cylinder extending up from that line is asking a bit much.

But the discussion was about whether it either was, or wasn't, a blocking foul. The rules make it pretty clear it was a blocking foul. I'm just glad the break went OSU's way. The refs did blow the call though, and it may have called Iowa St. the game. I'm not sure what else really needs said about it.
