Cavs gave him a bunch of guaranteed money, espn has him listed as one of the best undraft free agents this year, and it seems nearly impossible that Quinn could beat him out for 3rd string PG right now. Probably time to give the kid his own thread.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/9472308/five-undrafted-free-agents-watch-summer-nba

Here are five players who entered this summer with Matthews-type dreams of proving to the world that NBA teams were wrong to pass on them in the draft and have the chance to stick on NBA rosters this season.

Matthew Dellavedova | PG | Saint Mary's
Summer league team: Cleveland Cavaliers
NBA role: Backup PG

An Aussie point guard from Saint Mary's who excels in the pick-and-roll game and is a terrific 3-point shooter ... no, we're not talking about Spurs backup guard Patty Mills. Dellavedova was one of the national leaders in assist percentage last season, orchestrating a Saint Mary's offense that ranked fourth in the nation in offensive efficiency. He burst on the national scene as a freshman, when he helped the Gaels upset the ninth-ranked Villanova Wildcats in the tournament, outplaying All-American counterpart Scottie Reynolds.

Dellavedova isn't long or quick, but he brings good size to the position at 6-foot-4 and is deadly in pick-and-roll situations as the rare pass-first player who can make teams pay if they choose to go under screens. He'll struggle defensively when put on an island, but he has a high basketball IQ and could play himself into a third-string PG role somewhere in the league with a strong summer league showing.

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

How much is a "bunch of guaranteed money," because the quotes from his parents in the story below suggest it was small enough that it likely wouldn't cause the Cavs to think twice about letting him go. Is this one of those deals where he is basically getting some cash for his Summer league play (unlike most non-contract players on the team who only get room and board) or is there real money involved? I haven't seen a figure publicized.

“Matthew has signed a partially guaranteed contract,’’ Dellavedova’s father, Mark, said yesterday.

“What that means is that he’ll play for Cleveland in the Summer League and if he keeps ticking the boxes he’ll stay with Cleveland for their final try-outs in September.

“They could also cut him at any time. The positive is that Matthew has a chance to impress at Summer League.”

Would you mind telling us the other 4 guys on that list? I can't see the article because I don't have the membership.

And does anyone know if there is any way to donate LESS than $25 to this site? I just got a lot of graduation money but 25 is kinda pushing it.

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

Being a fellow Aussie I have watched quite a bit of his college ball and international ball.

First off the kid has the right attitude and work ethic. So at worst case we have someone who'll work their butt off every minute of every drill. He is an enthusiastic bugger who is forever in his team mates ear pumping them up. These are things you cannot teach. So if you are taking on a marginal player to sit at the end of the bench, these are attributes you are after.

Talent wise he has good range on his J, great at finding an open man off pick'n'roll situations and won't hesitate to take the big shot if the clock is winding down. He works very hard defensively although struggles with his lack of quickness. He isn't a strong finisher inside which has as much to do with his average athleticism as anything else.

Dellavedova is a pure point guard who if we are not going after an experienced NBA point, then we wont go too far wrong.

For your reference Basketball Australia have placed Dellavedova in Cleveland to get in Kyrie's ear to play for his country of birth. It would be only fair!

Last summer, the Cavs guaranteed $50K to Kevin Jones and $300k to Micheal Eric. I think it's safe to assume that Dellavedova got money somewhere in that range. Both Kevin Jones and Micheal Eric got waived. It's possible that Dellavedova gets waived, but his competition is Chris Quinn, who's roster spots look more than a little vulnderable.

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

Thought he was very good today. Spoke with his Aunt and she said his folks who are over in Vegas supporting him have said he is pretty confident that he will be invited to camp.

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

I'd rather keep him as the 3rd PG than Quinn. He has good size and good PG skills based on the little I've seen and his good assist numbers and assist to turnover ratio at St. Mary's. If one of our PGs went down, I think we might give Waiters some time there before the 3rd PG, but it would be good to have a more developmental PG on the roster.

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

you can definitely see from summer league that he plays with his brain; smart passes knows where everyone should be, etc. which is very good because as the announcers pointed out a few times in the last game, he has a hard time getting by his man in the open court.. but id rather have a subpar athlete with a great IQ as my 3rd PG than a bonehead super athlete who is just gonna pound the rock and chuck the ball at the rim. looking forward to see him develop

edit- does he have an accent? thatd be sweet.

Mate, we don't have an accent, you Americans do.

As for the 3rd string point guard, I would rather it be a pure point then another long line of combo guards we have thrown into this role. In the event of an injury to Irving or Jack, I would like to see an actual point guard playing the backup minutes rather then force someone like Waiters and previously Gibson. Dellavedova certainly fits this mould, but he one of many options out there (prefer it be an Aussie!).

Too right, Mate..

Sort of interesting how he worded this. Do the Cavs not want him on the 15 man?

Considering Chris Fucking Quinn is on the 15 man, if the Cavs don't make any other moves I don't see why they can't sign Dellavedova.

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

Not impressed: has trouble getting off a shot against the interior defense when he drives and he blew some easy passes that a PG should be able to make like a lob to an open player on the break. I think he's been given more leeway from posters because his comparison has been the awful Quinn
