Alright, I'll bite, even though I'm pretty sure I'm breaking NBA financial laws with this offseason. :chuckles:
1. Fire Mike Brown; Hire Lionel Hollins to a 4-year contract
In the last three years of his tenure in Memphis, Lionel Hollins led the Grizzlies to three straight playoff appearances in the powerful Western Conference with a team lacking a true superstar, including a trip to the Western Conference finals in his last season. Hollins led some great defensive squads as well, anchored by defensive guards Mike Conley and Tony Allen, along with a true defensive anchor in big man Marc Gasol. Lionel Hollins is the perfect candidate as an established coach to help lead this young Cavaliers squad to the postseason.
2. Draft Doug McDermott with the ninth pick in the 2014 NBA Draft
Doug McDermott would provide a 6'8'' wing that is capable of scoring in bunches, even if he wouldn't necessarily be a regular starter in his first season with the club. McDermott could help provide a lethal second unit scoring punch with Dion Waiters giving the Cavaliers one of the best bench squads in the league.
3. Sign Kyrie Irving to a max contract extension
Locking up Kyrie Irving for the near future should be one of the main goals of the Cavaliers front office this offseason.
4. Bring LeBron James Home
Bringing LeBron James home would be one of the biggest sports stories of all time and would also make the Cavaliers instant title contenders. With flexibility to play four positions, LeBron will allow the Cavaliers to be very creative with their lineups. Pairing him with Kyrie Irving, the first true PG he'd ever play with, would create one of the best 1-2 punches in the NBA.
5. Let Luol Deng Walk, But Bring Back Spencer Hawes and CJ Miles
Luol Deng was an interesting get for the Cavaliers this season, but his role becomes redundant with the clear upgrade of LeBron James, and makes him not worth the big bucks it'll take to keep him. CJ Miles and Spencer Hawes are two defensive liabilities that can score in bunches, and while neither of them are lethal starters, two floor spacers paired with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving in the starting lineup is just what this team needs. Hopefully Miles and Hawes could be kept for slightly lower prices with the prospect of competing for a championship.
6. Trade Tristan Thompson for veterans
Bringing LeBron in makes the team title contenders, and with Spencer Hawes, Anthony Bennett, Tyler Zeller, Anderson Varejao, and LeBron James all able to play one or both of the big man positions, Tristan Thompson's role on the team becomes a bit unclear. With a potential pay day coming up for Tristan, it'd be a good idea to trade Tristan while we could still get something of value back for him. What LeBron-title contending team is complete without ring-chasing veterans? I'd trade Tristan Thompson to the Clippers for Matt Barnes and a draft pick/prospect.
7. Win the Whole Damn Thing
This team as constructed is an easy title contender, and with Miami losing LeBron James, it would seem that only the Indiana Pacers are the only true threat to the Cavaliers in a still weakened East.
Point Guard - Kyrie Irving / Jarrett Jack / Matthew Dellavedova
Shooting Guard - CJ Miles / Dion Waiters
Small Forward - Matt Barnes / Doug McDermott / Sergey Karasev
Power Forward - LeBron James / Anthony Bennett
Center - Spencer Hawes / Anderson Varejao / Tyler Zeller
Unrealistic and illegal? Probably, but you asked what my perfect offseason was. :chuckles:
