Who will be our "Pau Gasol" when we're in a position to trade ??

I keep reading that we're all about making small moves right now.. Beginning this summer and beyond we'll have a flexibility to be able to acquire a larger piece to the puzzle...

Who are some of the potential targets ??

I would guess anyone thats 6-3 to 6-9 and does not have a clear defined position but in a pinch can guard 2 or 3 spots.

Kirk Hinrich
Jason Richardson
Mike Miller
Peja
Marco Jaric
Kirilenko
Harrington
Diaw

This started out as a joke but the more I think about it these are the types of players the front office and coaching staff love. I'm scared.

Ben,

I find that list both disturbing and disgusting..

I'd only want Miller on that list, maybe Richardson....I would consider AK, but the water in Cleveland would pretty much guarantee a catostrophic injury, followed by a staph infection...

I want to say Redd, as I am nearly certain he will be traded by next years deadline, but i can't see him being traded within the Division.

I'll throw some other names out there that have longer contracts that could possibly be had for expirings:

VC
Z. Randolph
T-Mac
and a longer shot, JET
Crawford

None of those are even that enticing. hmmm

Expensive guys on bad team... regardless of position

Jermaine O'Neal
Joe Johnson
T-Mac
Vince Carter
Michael Redd
Kirk Hinrich
Knicks
Antoine Walker
Anyone on the Knicks

The Cavs would probably have to take on another contract as well, like Bobby Simmons w/Redd or something similar.

Any chance for Elton Brand ?

I'm not sure what the contract is so I don't know if it's even remotely possible ???

Brand has a $16.4M early termination option for 08-09...

Redd, Joe Johnson, Carter and J. O'Neal seem to be the main names of players who fit the profile of those who could be dealt for ending contracts.

I believe O'Neal's contract ends next season so there really isn't much incentive for the Pacers to move him for only ending contracts.

I have more and more doubts the Cavs are going to be able to acquire a big time major talent with the their ending contracts. These type of deals also require throwing in young talent and #1 picks, not just trading the contracts. The Cavs don't really have much of those things to give up.
You're also dealing with trying to trade within the division or with a team like the Hawks whose continuing ownership mess make trades with them just about impossible.

It could end up that they add a couple of players on the Mike Miller level rather than a big time star. That could still work and would improve the team.

The list isn't too bad it just doesn't have that legit superstar quality...

Vince Carter
Andre Iguodala
Ben Gordon
Michael Redd
Tracy McGrady
Jermaine O'Neal
Kirk Hinrich
Mo Williams
Andrei Kirilenko
Corey Maggette
Elton Brand
Lamar Odom
Nene Hilario
Mike Miller

All these guys have a big amount of "if's" on them like whether or not the team would want to blow it up, whether or not the team would be willing to move someone that isn't producing to their level, etc.... There a lot of factors that play into it and they usually play out during the season, like we have seen...

Honestly, I'd rule out all Eastern Conference players as I highly doubt any team would want to help out LeBron... I just don't think any GM is going to trade their star to a team with a 24 year old superstar next year...

I don't see Joe Johnson being on the block as he's still relatively young, the team is headed in the right direction and most importantly he's the face of the franchise...

I dunno, Memphis just gave Gasol to Los Angeles and they're both in the West... I wouldn't discount a player just because he's in the same conference. (Hell, Danny Ainge helped out the Pistons when he sent Chris Mills (expiring contract) to Atlanta in the 'Sheed deal).

I find it very hard to believe a team will trade us a star to go with the best player in the NBA. But even though I find it hard, Memphis pretty much gave Gasol to the Lakers and Kobe isn't too bad.

When it comes down to it, it's going to take a little luck or possibly even a free agent that wants to come here that can force his teams hand. This could lead to expiring contracts, a pick and Varejao or Gooden leaving in a trade.

As the hope dwindles...

Elton Brand would be a big gamble for this year, but he's worth pursuing. Which means we won't.
