Fist Fight - 6/10

Was in the mood to watch a comedy after the loss tonight. Fist Fight was better than it had any right to be. I'm now convinced that Charlie Day can carry any comedy and make it both funny and watchable. This kind of reminded me of Office Christmas Party. Both were simple concepts featuring a bunch of solid comedic actors. The difference was that this movie was actually funny. Dumb, sure, but I laughed quite a bit. It also shockingly paid off most of the subplots in the film and featured some actual character development, which are two touches that most comedies neglect these days. And the fight at the end actually lived up to the build.

All in all, worth watching. Not a classic by any means, but it's dumb fun. Day and Ice Cube were both perfect in their roles.

Bad Moms- 4/10

This wasn't the last movie I saw, but man was it awful. It tried desperately to be funny, but never got as much as a chuckle out of me.

Synopsis/ maybe spoilers:
Standard deadbeat scumbag husband is shown the door who later pops up a few times to remind you he's a loser deadbeat that deserved to have been left. Mila gets the perfect more handsome nice guy at the end. Some antics happen between involving alcohol and pta moms. They sure took a bunch of risks with this film!

The Belko Experiment - 3/10

Interesting concept. Lackluster, boring execution and bad writing. Skip it.

Has anyone seen the "All Eyez on Me" Tupac biopic yet?

Was planning on going to see it this weekend. The reviews have been pretty terrible so far, and I'm really bummed about that. I had pretty high expectations after Straight Outta Compton, which was really well done.

Zoolander no.2- 2/10

Simply couldn't finish it. Awful all the way around. Few redeeming qualities. A couple guffaws. The original was no masterpiece but at least it had a few catchphrases. Paul Mooney pulled off his part but that was it.

"I am All"

Literally the only good part.

I watched this a few months ago. 5mins in, you knew it was going to be awful. I love Mila Kunis, but she is not a lead. I somehow thought it would get better, but it never got to the point where it did.

I've been on a horror kick lately, but not the usual fare.

It Comes At Night (7/10)

This movie is deceptively complex and definitely in that "art house" horror category. Don't go into this one looking for jump scares or even a monster. There is a bit of a backlash because the trailers were done so well, but the film lacked the punch promised. What I do appreciate is the atmospheric direction and the overwhelming sense of dread that creeps in over the 90 minutes or so. This is not for everyone, but for the observant movie goer it's worth a look. Little camera tricks help set the mood, but ultimately that's what this movie is, a dark mood piece that hints at horror. That seems to be the trend with this new crop of acclaimed horror movies (The Babbadook for example). Flashes of horror wrapped in metaphor or atmosphere. Of course, this is my grade and my tastes, but I can definitely understand why another person would trash this flick too.

Trail to Busan (8/10)

This was on Netflix, and it's a Korean zombie flick. This movie was just fun. A businessman is taking his daughter by train to Busan to her mother in the midst of the zombie apocalypse, and the virus manages to get aboard. Claustrophobic and intense, if this had a larger scope it would've been the perfect World War Z. There were a few times that I would mutter "oh shit", and that's when you know you've got a good zombie flick. Yes, it features running zombies, but it's all done well and to great effect.

It's two hours long; which I thought would be detriment, but I was engaged from start to finish. There are subtitles too, but it's not bad since there's not too much exposition. I would detract a few points for a few shoddy CGI moments, and some typical zombie movie tropes (you'll recognize these moments when they happen). Still, this was a very pleasant surprise and worth the watch.

Yeah, I don't think she can carry a film. To be fair she wasn't working with the best material. I hated how they had to constantly remind us that her husband was this incompetent loser so that it was okay to immediately get another guy. At least that's what it felt like to me. Standard idiot dad trope along with controlling husband for one of the other wives husbands.

You know what show did a great job portraying husbands/fathers, mothers/wives? Big little lies. I know one is a television series drama and the other is a comedy film. Big little lies still managed to have more humor and didn't rely on film cliches.

I'm out of movies.

Trying john wick on the new 4k. Keanu is... Still doing action with guns with a backdrop of industrial music and Gothic elements. Two decades going strong.

Finally saw Wonder Woman.

Rather liked it.

Now, who wins: Supes v. WW and Zoom (or alternately Reverse Flash) v. WW?

I thought Bad Moms was pretty funny. I did think Mila Kunis was a little bit of a stretch as a lead, but I got some laughs out of it.

So after the critic-bashing and terrible Rotten Tomatoes score that put me off watching what was maybe my most anticipated film of 2016, I finally got to seeing "Collateral Beauty."

I'm convinced that the critical response is a conspiracy. Every person I've spoken to has delivered a contrary verdict and a simple Twitter search suggests a majority of approvals.

It appears that critics discredit films based on ethics and morality, instead, referring to it as "self-righteous" and "pretentious". I'd say it's both self-righteous and pretentious to use those terms to define a movie like this.

Normally I'm right there with critical response but I don't think I've ever seen a film where my opinion couldn't be any further apart from their general consensus.

I would think Zoom wins, because he can manipulate time, right? That extra dimension means he can undo or at least learn from his mistakes and get a redo. As for Superman v. Wonder Woman, well, I think it just ends in them banging so can't decide a winner there.
