Beer snob thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Has anyone in the Cleveland area heard anything about Crooked Pecker Brewing? Looks like they are going to be based out of Chagrin Falls when they open, and specializing in NE IPA's. The pictures on their Facebook look amazing, but there's not much information about them other than that.

Here's the latest I've seen on Crooked Pecker: https://www.ohio.com/akron/pages/beer/crooked-pecker-brewing-draws-inspiration-from-new-england

Speaking of IPA's, it has been a very good couple of weeks in Cleveland.

There are some Half Acre IPAs (Gone Away) and DIPAs (Navaja) in stores at the moment. Apparently this is related to some event that Half Acre participated in recently and it might be a one time thing. At least that is what the owner of Banter in the Detroit Shoreway told me last night. I'm hoping not though, because I used to live in Chicago and really miss Daisy Cutter as a go to beer. Anyway, I've seen some cans at Heinen's in Rocky River and at Banter for those interested.

Also, I keep seeing SingleCut Beersmiths' brews on menus and in stores. Had Cold Fire (DIPA, 8.2%) at Mabel's on tap before a game a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic, highly recommended for IPA/ DIPA fans. And Banter has a few cans of Full-Stack (DIPA, 8.3%) and Softly Spoken Magic Spells (DIPA, 8.3%). Both of these were highly recommended to me by a friend who lives in New York, so I was pretty excited to see them in the store. Looking forward to cracking these guys in the near future, and, hopefully, seeing more SingleCut in the local market soon.

All that plus it is Brew Kettle's El Lupulo Libre and Fat Head's Hop Juju bottle season. Good times for IPA/ DIPA indeed.

EDIT - embarrassingly, I forgot about Masthead when I first posted. They released two NEIPA's and a session NEIPA today. Good times.

Headed to Buffalo for a day from Canada. I want to buy one or two bottles of beer. Anyone able to suggest some craft brews to pick up from there?

@TheLand1287 or anyone else going to Dark Lord Day?

I’d love to go someday, I’ve actually never tried Dark Lord. I know some say it’s soy saucey and overrated, but I’d still like to try it one day. I heard the festival is a great time though, provided you can last for most of it.

I'll try to give a bit of a summary sometime next week. I'm heading out today after work; staying in a hotel overnight. I've heard the shares are the best part, but I'm angling to get there early and leave early.

From the looks of it, there's at least some good taps going on to start the day. Marshmallow Handjee and Chemtrailmix right at 9am. Good luck on your variant!

I am not. I went down to Jackie O's last weekend to do my bottle exchange and pick up bottles of Vision is Lost. Unfortunately, too much going on to do back to back weekend trips.

Truthfully, I've had Dark Lord and it's just ok. I'd really only want to go for the bottle share and the variant bottle. Keep us posted on the variant you get.

Lol, I got the limit of 6. Just traded one for a Pirate Paradise today. I saw you had one recently and that's one I've been after for awhile.

Welp, I finally have a moment to give a brief recap of Dark Lord Day.

Left from work on Friday; such an easy drive. Sucks it costs $20 per way in tolls, but whatever. We got-in on Friday night at about 9:30 CT to our hotel in Hammond, Indiana. The moment we got there, there was a banquet room open for DLD folks to share in. There were only about 20 folks or so at my hotel, but I got to try some real gems (vanilla abraxas, coffee abraxas, Trill, stuff from all over..). I only stayed up until about 12:30 or so because we wanted to wake-up early on Saturday to get handjee.

Saturday at 6 AM I get-up. My step-bro and I have a ride coming at 7 and we wanted to get a bite to eat before leaving. Ride got there 15 minutes late and took us on the most circuitous route possible, making our 7 mile ride a 30 minute ride. We got to walk-in to the bullpen at about 8; we passed hundreds of folks in the street, drinking-down their bags to the 72 ounce limit. My step-bro and I wiggled-up to near the front of the second entrance and that's where things started to get tasty. Everywhere I turn, there is someone ready to hit me with a pour of their open bottle/can. I opened up my beers and set it on this picnic table in the midst of it all just to give something back.

9 AM, the gate opens and it's like Pamplona. I succumbed to anxiety and made a dash for the handjee line. Ended up being about 40 back and got that sample out of the way early under a slight drizzle that would be the only rain all day. The handjee was fantastic; viscous, vanilla goodness. After that, we walked over to get ChemTrailMix and DAMN was that fucking good. People were trying to wait for the Cavaliero to tap, so they were just waiting for folks to walk to the front of the line for CTM so the keg would kick. Can't believe that...

We were Group B (11 AM to 1 PM). We went and got our bottles (step-bro my proxy) at about 11:30 AM & I got a Brozerker (port) and a Hung, Drawn, & Quartered (rye). After that, we hit the merch line and I got to taste some other guest taps, as well as Hung Drawn N Quartered on tap. The place was already a shit-show by the time I left at like 2 PM or so. Took a nap from 2:30 to 5:30, woke-up and went to BW3 to watch the Cavs and get a real meal. Drove home early Sunday in lieu of going to wait at More for the Henna Swirl release.

I'll probably go back. My step-bro probably won't. We behaved. Didn't pass-out, puke, or make an ass out of ourselves. To be honest, my stomach got pretty damn full from all of that stout (oh yes, I hit a porto-potty #2 style). Didn't stay for the metal concert.

Oh man... I've absolutely blown out a porto-potty at the World Beer Festival in Raleigh before. Drinking a ton of stouts and porters combined with the inevitable drunk food cart purchases is the perfect storm.

It would appear that Richmond has exploded onto the craft beer scene racking up accolades lately and being named in many lists of best beer towns in the US

I think we are now up to 28 breweries with most popping up in the last 5 years

I know some posters are located in the Carolinas or Virginia, have any of you guys had any Richmond brews? If not I’d really recommend a day trip, there’s so much great beer and fun venues in town

Hardywood, The Answer, Strangeways, Three Notch’d, and Vasen to name a few are great spots

Veil Brewing is also an outstanding Richmond brewery. They’ve got some really funky beers.

So everyone has been hootin and hollerin about Aslin Beer Company in DC so Saturday I made the trip up to pick up cans. Unfortunately they don't have a tasting room so I just picked up several 4 packs of cans and split it with some of my friends in Richmond that wanted to try it as well.

They had a PB&J IPA which was surprisingly really good. They're pretty IPA focused which is probably my least favorite style, but I can appreciate that they are quality IPAs. Pictured below is one of their more famous and highly rated beers, Double Orange Starfish. I preferred the single Orange Starfish better, but this was a pretty good beer.

Probably my favorite beer I picked up was a small batch imperial stout they only had 45 cans of called Belly Shirts. I was able to get 2 of them and it was a great imperial stout. Didn't take a picture of it in glass because I shared with my friends, but it had a great after taste and very smooth. No idea how they got this to be 15% alcohol because it had no kick at all to it. Likely magic.

Also I loved the can art for it, hung it up in my cube lol:
