I think it's because Matthew McConaughey's performance helps mask the flaws from the first season in a way that no one in season two is capable of.
Kind of like how Heath Ledger's Joker performance in The Dark Knight allows you to overlook all the movie's plot holes in a way that Tom Hardy's performance as Bane in the sequel does not. Both movies had a ton of plot holes, but you really only hear them brought up when talking about Rises, and it's because Ledger was so good no one cared about them in TDK.
I think the first season of True Detective comes together alot better at the end than season two. Both seem to make little sense in the first couple episodes.
Also personally I like Dark Knight Rises alittle better than Dark Knight. I'm a huge Nolan fan and Rises has the feel of a Nolan movie more than Dark Knight does. Dark Knight seems such a straight forward movie to me, which isn't like most Nolan movies.
