Figured I’d start this thread with Spring Training starting.

News: Giants manager Bruce Bochy retiring after this season. Definitely a hall of famer.

Potential for the CBA discussions to get real real ugly.

2021 is going to be an interesting year for football and baseball.

We could go without a World Series and a Super Bowl.

That would be a real shame considering Cleveland should be participating in each of those playoffs that year.

Just because the MLB Players Union has been so strong for so long, I’m very curious about how that all plays out. Especially with owners and the commissioner starting to get vocal about players and agents.

NFL always seems like it’ll be bad but the players cave rather easily and in a short period of time.

But yeah, lot of uncertainty in both sports with regards to their future right now.

Average MLB career is nearly twice as long as the average NFL career. Much more severe financial implications for sitting out an NFL season for the majority of players (in terms of % of career earnings).

Also guaranteed vs. non-guaranteed contracts may play a part in that as well.

It is going to be interesting to see how much things change. For football I am thinking more guarantees and/or pensions with everyone every playing having medical the rest of their lives type of focus.

Baseball is going to be way more tricky since we have guaranteed money, but big differences between how much teams are willing to pay hence why I almost feel we need a minimum cap and a hard top cap. Teams who are under the minimum cap have to pay a certain amount extra to players on the 40 man roster per day on the roster type of thing.

in addition would love to see a franchise type label in baseball. Right now its too easy for big cities to just wait and offer huge amounts of money to free agents.

Baseball though has a lot better of controlling players than any other sport honestly cause of the arbitration process. I wonder if players will look to change the process or not. Though I know there will be some changes in free agency process.

MLB teams already control players for a LONG time. I wouldn’t anticipate them exploring a means to extend that control.

Some sort of salary cap would accomplish your goal without restricting player movement.

It seems like the luxury tax line has done a decent enough job in recent years of providing a pseudo cap for most teams

I honestly think a floor should be discussed. There are teams paying almost 3 times less in payroll than the luxury tax line. If you can’t afford to spend at a minimum level, you should have to sell your team to someone who can

If Machado is still a perennial MVP-caliber type of player after that fifth year (he'd be 31 years old), I'd expect him to opt out and try to line up another 7-8 year deal for similar money somewhere else.

Wonder when Bryce is going to sign.
