On The Clock: 2019 RCF NFL Mock Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Niners GM John Lynch didn't have anyone on his draft board taken in at least ten picks, then his top prospect came off the board.

...We here in the home office think he is handling it very well. That's because he had a top three list that still leaves a difficult decision.

With the 104th pick in the 2019 Draft, the San Francisco Forty Niners select:

Kaleb McGary, RT, Washington

Height: 6'7 Weight 318
Arms 32 7/8 Hands 10 1/8

Why McGary?

The Niners are in good shape at this point, they get to select a long term project. They had some of the best tackle play in the league in 2018, despite the quarterback position being in flux due to injury. They have an aging franchise pillar in Joe Staley at left tackle and the best rookie tackle Mike McGlinchey playing on the right side - the left tackle in waiting. The team also cut vet swing tackle Gary Gilliam because he never had reason to play.

What better time to draft the right tackle of the future? McGary has some issues with foot work on the edge, and his arms could ideally be an inch and a half longer. Big whoop. He is a brute and a mauler, PAC 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year. He gets to practice as swing tackle this year, and if/when the injury hits he will get a taste of right tackle in the NFL. Due to his excellent power at the point of attack, his ceiling is a run dominant starting right tackle, floor is a guy who can help at right guard because of his run blocking in a phone booth. His shortcomings on tape were lessened at the Senior Bowl, where he showed quick improvement in his pass protection footwork in a short amount of time.

Niners draft selections:

#2 - Nick Bosa - Fixes the floundering 2018 pass rush, along with Ford and Buckner.

#36 - Nasir Adderely - The best free safety available in my opinion, and someone who will create turnovers now that a pass rush exists.

#67 - Riley Ridley - A solid second receiver who runs great routes and has huge reliable hands.

#104 - Kaleb McGary - Offensive tackle prospect playing the swing tackle spot who could start at right tackle for several teams immediately.

There has been a trade:

The New York Jets have traded pick 105 to the Washington Redskins for their 2019 5th round pick and a 4th round pick in 2020.

Washington is now on the clock. @Out of the Rafters at the Q

With the 105th pick in the 2019 Draft, the Washington Redskins select:

Daniel Jones, QB, Duke

Height: 6'5" Weight 221 lbs
Arms 32.5" Hands 9 3/4"

Why Jones?
A former 2-star recruit, Jones has worked with David Cutcliffe, the guy who groomed Peyton Manning, Eli Manning and Heath Shuler for the past 4 years. This guy eats, breathes, and sleeps football, and it shows. The redshirt Junior has wowed the college game with his ability to execute a pro-style offense. Just look at his highlights compared to anyone else's. The guy processes the entire field, uses his eyes to move safeties around, and then delivers accurate throws like a 10-year NFL veteran.

Jones is our #3 QB prospect this year, and the fact that he's lasted until the fourth round is absolutely absurd. He had first round buzz last year before returning to school, and could go in the first this year. So, we had to pull another trade to snag this premium value. We're excited to have a player of Jones's advanced skillset and work ethic. You need guys who love to play football, and we have the most football-dedicated QB this class.

Also, Jones is the only quarterback among the top 7 QB prospects who had no teammates expected to be drafted. Jones also played the hardest schedule among those seven quarterback prospects.

Washington draft selections:

#15 - Jonah Williams, traded for AJ Green, a true #1 WR that this team was missing

#46 - Chris Lindstrom - The most ready interior lineman in the draft to play in a power run scheme and play action pass. Look what we're doing next year.

#76 - Blake Cashman - An incredibly productive linebacker, the former walk-on posted top notch combine numbers, rating near the top for his position in every single test. It's the guys who love football who continue to get better in the NFL, and Cashman is one of those guys.

#96 - David Long - One of the better corners in the class, Long has all the tools you look for in a corner, plus he's a physical run defender--which fits nicely into a defense whose identity is stopping the run.

#98 - Khalen Saunders - One of the better lineman prospects in the draft, Saunders gives us depth behind our three starting defensive linemen.

#105 - Daniel Jones - Perhaps the most NFL-ready QB in this draft, the guy's exciting in every way I like. He is the most cerebral QB in the class, and can pick a defense apart with good accuracy and a lightning quick release.

Please try to remember to tag the next drafting GM after your pick. @blommen is our European based GM and I see that he was on the website several times last night but he didn't see that he was on the clock to pick.

With the 106th pick in the 2019 NFL draft the Hjalte Froholdt, IOL, Arkansas

Hjalte-Froholdt-Banner.png

Why Froholdt:

Look, I'm drunk it's the 4th round and he's Danish. What more do you want from me?

Per the draft network:

PROS: Impressive athlete who moves well in space. Gets out on the perimeter and finds and latches onto targets. Excellent body control. Gets to the second level and seals off linebackers. Diverse blocking scheme gives him well-rounded experience in variety of systems.

Moves well in pass protection. Doesn’t get overextended, punches from a flat-backed position and typically lands his hands well. Excels from the neck up, knows and executes assignments and keeps active eyes in pass protection to look for work.

CONS: Just not overly physical at all. Doesn’t look to finish and very content with stalemates. Rarely creates movement at the point of attack. Lacks the power and tenacity to really overwhelm opponents at the point of attack. Slow and late with his hands, allowing defenders to get into his frame and dictate terms. Is there a level of nasty to his game that we haven’t seen?

Although he is a good puller, he doesn’t arrive with a vengeance to kick out defenders or open a hole at the second level. Rashaan Evans stole his soul with a good box technique. As a whole, doesn’t always seem prepared for the physicality of certain engagements. Spends too much time on the ground and can be slow to react to counter moves.

@Soda and Tampa Bay are on the clock

My bad. Was going to bed as I saw it was my turn to pick. Had a "here's my pick, I'll write-up tomorrow" in there. Forgot @blommen

I informed @Soda he was on the clock yesterday and he is well past the time limit. I'm giving him one more hour. This is might be the most neglectful draft day snafu from a commissioner since Pete Roselle slipped away from the 1982 NFL draft to sip mint jullips and bet the ponies with Art Schlichter.

With the 107th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select:

Nate Davis, OG, Charlotte

fnt019022019113701.jpg

Height 6'3 Weight 319
Arms 33 1/8 Hands 9.5

Why?

Tampa Bay addressed their need at offensive tackle in round two. Now, they find themselves with a solid left guard in Ali Marpet and replacement level play at right guard. Davis has experience at guard but played the past two seasons at left tackle.

Run Blocking - Capable of generating movement in the run game with powerful leg drive and the ability to uncoil his hips. Illustrates plenty of grip strength to sustain blocks and does well to stay square to his opponents. Works blocking angles to his advantage and battles to position his frame to create lanes.

Pass Blocking - Notably better tape working on the inside than at tackle in college. Can get sloppy with his pass sets and open the door for pass rushers to cross his face. Anchor is only average. Base will narrow and is guilty of crossing his feet. Has enough mobility to stay square. Punch is powerful and capable of stunning rushers. Tools are present but needs development.

Blocking in Space - Moves well and takes good angles to consistently connect in space with moving targets. Plays under control and does well to square up to his opponent. Highly effective as a lead blocker into the boundary and arrives to his landmarks with good timing. Outstanding vertical blocker to the second level.

Power - Has excellent power in his frame that is capable of dominating at the point of attack playing forward. He does well to finish blocks and execute with a nasty demeanor. That said, anchor is only average to absorb contact on account of an inconsistently set base that often narrows.

IQ - Aware and alert in pass pro and does well to react to pressure packages. Hips hinge fluidly which enables him to snap off blocks and help as needed. Consistently looks for and finds work in space and when uncovered. Effectively takes advantage of angels and is committed to playing with leverage.

Feet - Has good foot speed and is able to redirect his weight without laboring. With that said, taking better pass set angles will lead to him more consistently framing rushers on deeper drops. Will get his feet crossed up and not set wide enough. Takes good angles in the run game and when working in space.

Hands - Hands are heavy and powerful. Does well to lock up opponents and fit his hands. Grip strength is outstanding. Punch timing can stand to improve and hand carriage is sometimes low. Has the pop in his punch to stun rushers.

Balance - Contact power and balance is generally good but he is guilty of narrowing his base and crossing his feet. Absorbing power can be problematic when his base narrows. Plays with great leverage but his weight will get too far forward and he folds at the waste. Finds himself on the ground a fair amount and he doesn't have great body control.

@Stark on the clock.

Give me Tre Lamar, LB, Clemson for the Giants at #108. Giants could really use another solid linebacker, and I think Tre fits the bill.
