Goodbye Larry Nance Jr.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I wonder if the offense initiator role as a big was a team directive or if he's just improvising. I think utilizing this season as a purely pick and pop player would've served us and him better in the long run but it's tough without any inside info on this drastic shift in playing style.

I think it started as a directive from the coaching staff to get the centers involved in the offense. They wanted to take pressure off Sexton and keep Clarkson at SG at the beginning of the season. The development of Sexton and Cedi have basically reduced the need for it in the starting unit. TT has stopped doing it and they stopped asking Zizic to try to do it.

It only came back recently by Nance when Delly went out. Maybe the front office and coaching staff wanted to reexamine it for these last games. Maybe Drew just doesn't give a crap anymore.

The front office needs to tell Nance that they want him to be a stretch 4 next season, not a point forward. They should tell him that if he can't make the jump to a stretch 4 then he will have to fight for limited minutes at center against TT, Zizic, and Henson.

After reading @The Human Q-Tip post in the TT thread about TT and other players gravity. I realize the major problem with Nance wanting to be a point forward. He lacks the scoring ability on the ball to create the necessary gravity to create for others effectively. Without the ability to score, defenses will just invite him to shoot and just play the passing lanes. He doesn't have the ability to create action to get the defense off its heals so he has to wait for off the ball action to create openings. Without him able to score, the offense will just be a bunch of slow developing plays. Add to that the lack of rebounding on Nance's part and you get a real ineffective offense.

I can't remember which game it was but he was standing at the top of the key with the ball and there was nobody uncovered to pass it to. It turned into a turnover and he started yelling at Sexton I think before the camera cut away while the announcers were blaming Sexton and Osman for not moving.

They ignored the obvious and that was Nance is seen a a zero scoring threat by opposing teams so they will just stand back and guard the other 4 guys with their 5 and dare him to shoot because he won't most of the time. He won't even drive when he has clear openings. The whole scenario plays out because he isn't seen as a legitimate NBA scorer.

I also hate his body language. He looks like a guy that hates to play basketball.

It's either passes to Clarkson or draining the clock so whoever he does pass it to has to shoot it. He will make one or two good bounce passes every once in a while but he makes just as many if not more bad cross court passes.

Defenders now know how to play him in transition. Even slow guys like Zubac can be draped around his back and cause him to fumble around the ball when he is trying to bring it into the half court.

My hope is Clarkson is gone in the summer and Nance will be forced to play better team ball. If not, Koby can trade him at the deadline.

The front office needs to also make it clear that they need him to work on post moves and more shooting spots around the arc in the summer.

My favorite is the pass that looks like he is trying to skip rocks across a pond. It's like a whiffle ball at his teammates' knees.

The part that sucks is he is a good passer and he could develop chemistry with Love and others, but he holds the ball too long. Just needs to get it moving. Get the offense into a flow.

When he brings it up, it is just burning the clock.

It's the quintessential example of moving without a purpose, but that pretty much sums up our entire offense to be honest. Telegraphed plays lacking imagination and pointless passes that eventually bleed the shot clock and lead to a terrible shot. I sometimes think I'm watching Northwestern basketball.

Can’t stand him, also think Sexton and Cedi played so much better when he was injured. Gives off this entitled attitude because of who his dad was, always yelling at everybody and calling out the “young guys”. What exactly has he done in his career? He has a few nice dunks that’s it, and what exactly does he know about winning basketball games?

Hard to criticize a guy honing new skills during the tank.. I see Nance as a high energy player. If has in fact added a viable three, he is going to be enough of a problem to keep his own guy busy..Sexton is similar. Lots of minutes are frustrating but he improves as we go.. The key will be how he integrates when we bring on the new players..

This draft is critical in my mind.. While Zion is the consensus, after that our choices are risky. Morant seems a reliable pick, but i am not at all clear he would work with Sexton.. i like the idea of a barrett type, just not sure he is the one..

I have questions about RJ's ability to create separation but there are some extenuating circumstances that help relieve him of some of that criticism. College game isn't as wide open and they surrounded him with poor shooters while Cam Reddish was a non factor all year and it would seem coach K stopped coaching this season as their offense completely stagnated often barely winning games against less talented opposition.

RJ also transitioned from a wing player to a guard who initiates the offense generating a ton of assists and he seems like a pretty reliable rebounder. All of these attributes scream a solid running mate for Sexton. Defense will be worrisome obviously because we're about to finish the season as the worst defensive team in NBA history and this pairing probably won't resolve that glaring weakness.

Is this guy the most hated man on the Cavs? The hate is strong in this thread.

I was a huge fan of signing him, and then extending him. Loved his dad as both a player and a class act.

But his attitude towards Sexton just kind of jumps out, and it's annoying as hell.

This.

I liked the fact that we locked Nance up for awhile, with his legacy connection to his dad. BUT, he just seems like a total asshole to Sexton while preferring to play buddy ball with Clarkson. For those reasons I've cooled a lot on Nance. If I had to choose between LN Jr. and Sexton, I'd choose Sexton 10 times out of 10.

What perplexing about Nance is he has the attitude that he is the man on the team but his game doesn't back it up. I would respect him alot more if he was trying to score and put up big rebounding numbers.

I just don't understand how he thinks that being a non-scoring point forward is his niche for this team or in the league. Even if he or the team thinks he is a gifted passer, why not force him to work on his scoring aspects to compliment his passing and open up his game.

So what I’m hearing is....find a coaching staff that knows how to use him better and also make him accountable for his play while teaching him to “play the right way” and to not be a douche. I agree. Need a good coach.

I fastforward when him and Clarkson share the floor together. I also fast forward when we have the bench lineup on the floor tbh.

In all honesty, fuck him and Clarkson. They both ignored Sexton last night and it make me so angry when he pushes the ball on the break when he has SExton on the wings. Then he does his stupid fake hand-offs and that shit where he holds the ball and fakes a pass just to stagnate the offense. WTF.
