Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This may seem random, but Tony Bennett in college was so Delly. Offensively, he was this guy who didn't look like he belonged out there, but he made that Wisconsin-Green Bay offense hum like a V8. Of course, he never defended like Delly, but he did earn a spot backing up Muggsy Motherfucking Bogues for a while. Great to see the Delly early test version win it all.

That's interesting, but really Delly made it on defense more than running the team. Don't get me wrong. The offense was always better with Delly on the floor, and that is why we should have matched and dumped Shump, but Delly without his defense doesn't make the NBA right?

I'd really like to see Delly play tonight just because. That is a hell of a concussion. Get Henson on the floor too, just so we have one healthy game!

The knock on Delly coming into the league was that he struggles to play D.

Dellavedova measured a solid 6-3 without shoes, but sports just a 6-4 wingspan, which hampers him primarily on the defensive end, an area he struggled in both in college and in this setting. His unselfishness and high basketball IQ could nevertheless convince a team to use a NBA roster spot on him as he appears to be more than talented enough to hold his own on the offensive end of the floor at either guard spot.

Anyone think Mike Brown deserves any credit for helping the kid develop into an "in your grill defensive" force?

Well, in his roadtrippin interview he said he realized it was the only way he could make it to the next level(meaning college) was by playing good defense. He said he studied it in that Australian sports science schoo he went to.

Yeah his measurables say he was gonna be bad at defense in terms of wingspan, and fast twitch speed etc. He claims he measures out very well in lateral speed, which I would agree with. Maybe draft express doesn't know what it is talking about? He was good at defense as a rookie. Anyone who watched saw him do pretty darn well and by year 2 he was pissing Curry off. So, he learned all that from Mike Brown in one training camp?

Seems hard to believe that he sucked in college, where he claims he was very good, and that Mike Brown turned a guy who didn't play d into a master. Sure, he gets burnt on pure athleticism sometimes, but his technique is really good.

Delly is super into analytics, watching tape, and squeezing every drop out of his body. That is what his coffee drinking thing was about. It was timed to give him a boost in the 2nd half 45 min after he drank it at half time to close the games. The thing I really admire about his defense is that it is really rare that a guard shakes him with a crossover. He watches the guy and is not taken in by fakes, he knows which way a guy is gonna go. Not sure how he does it. His close outs too are about getting his hand as much in the guys face as possible as opposed to trying to block the shot which he basically can't do.

There is also his ridiculous effort level. He is extremely physical as a defender, constantly bumping and bodying up on guys - like what you said about how he closes out so hard. It pisses off other players and can tire them out. He doubles down on that by being equally aggresssive guarding someone off ball, with a rare degree of intensity.

Watching him guard Curry in 2015 was fun just on its own.

I’d love to see the Cavs keep Delly around as a backup point guard beyond this year. His positive energy & max effort have made him a fan favorite.

I see him as a poor man’s Patrick Beverly. He’s not as good on either side of the floor, but every team needs a selfless guy like Delly on their roster. He’s a good guy to have around our young guards.

I'll never get over his play in Game 3 of the 2015 Finals. I don't think I've ever seen anyone in a team sport give more than he gave in that game.

Wouldn't be a bad thing to sit down your team and have them all watch that -especially the young guys.

Gee you make him sound like he is some run of the mill schmuck from LA or Boston who stumbled into an NBA career and hasnt been expertly trained through the most proven pathway in the world. Let's not change the story here, Delly is an elite NBA player and an Olympic athlete that was taught everything he knows in an elite environment in the city thats produced the most NBA number 1 picks in NBA history, Melbourne, Australia.

No, he isn't. I mean, I love Delly, but he's nowhere near being an elite player in the NBA.

And I'm not sure what being from Melbourne has to do with anything. There may have been multiple number 1 overall picks from there, but Delly himself was undrafted.

Huh? Comparing Delly to Beverly is a compliment, in my book, as I consider Beverly to be the toughest & most determined player in the NBA. The only difference between the two is that Beverly is more athletic and he can be a staring caliber PG, as he is with the Clippers.

And Delly being elite?! C’mon now! Your Aussie bias is shining through more than just your handle.

Okay, it's cute that Melbourne has 3 players drafted #1, but only 2 actually grew up through Australian basketball. Cool story. Akron has 2 MVP players. MVPs over #1 draft picks.

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to spend some time around the Australian National team camp last week in their prep for the World Cup, and I have to say Dellys reworked jump shot is really good. Fast and he was automatic with it off the catch from distance.

My question to you all, is with Sexton and Garland, where does Dellys minutes come from?

Has been terrible in this first half against Canada, his new jump shot needs a lot of work
