Figured we could have a general gambling discussion thread.

Have some questions. So I know the basics of blackjack, just don’t know some of the numbers to double down on and so forth. Anyone have an app or book or something that they would recommend? Just when I go to Vegas or even the Jack I know what I’m doing fully. This goes for craps as well.

I’m also still trying to get the hang of sports betting. Any sources I could go read up on?

Also, I’m not a degenerate (only slightly)

Most dealers have a card with "the book" on it.

Casino doesn't care. You can bring your own reference card.

Just google blackjack charts.

You wanna double down 11 but mainly if the dealer is showing something with bust probability. You want to assume the dealer is going to flip a face/10 everytime. Also always split 8-8. So if you’re 15/16 and dealer is showing 7-A you more often than not are hitting and living with the busts.

Don’t get insurance. It’s a sucker bet. But yeah just look up charts online and it’ll give you the best statistic odds. But I believe house still has something like 53% edge over you.

If you’re trying to win big money play craps. People have always tried to explain it to me but I was too high to understand lol

Like Bill says, Blackjack is about numbers. Probability.

If you want a game where you have more control, try five card Hold 'Em.

Sure, probability is important in any card game, but if you know the odds, even remotely, and if you know how to read people, and you don't have a tell, you should do well.

I forgot to check this thread. So ya I worked overtime over the weekend and there wasn’t dick going on. Found a good blackjack app that I’ve been learning. Found a nice craps for dummies guide and I have been applying that to an app I found. So basically I got paid time and a half to teach myself how to gamble.

There ya go.. when I was learning how to play pot limit Omaha I played a lot of free money to understand the ins and outs. Good idea! Especially if you got paid to do it!!

forget blackjack and learn Texas hold 'em. If you're betting against the casino, you're guaranteed to lose over time (law of large numbers). If you're betting against other players with the casino taking a fee, you can win over time.

Hint: If you think you're gambling when you're playing Texas Hold 'em, you aren't doing it right and I want you sitting at my table. I tend to do very well against people who sit down to take a break from blackjack.

I definitely want to learn how to play that as well. Have any material I could read over?

It's hard to jump into the advanced stuff, play one of the free online sites and study some beginner books, learn terminology, get a feel for the game. When you think you have the hang of it, sign up for the $60 master class online by Daniel Negreanu. It's a waste of money before you understand all of the terminology, have mastered the beginners stuff, and have a basic feel for playing.

But even if you get to the point where you're playing winning poker before taking that master class, you'll discover you haven't scratched the surface yet of what the pros do when they play. Yet it's probably best to get to the point where you can usually win before doing that class.

Thanks, I’ll take a look.

I learned how to play Texas Hold Em by watching the World Series of Poker on ESPN back in the day

Phil Ivey was my dude

Not a whole lot
Ok, first thing you'll want to learn basic hand rankings. You'll want to learn about things like general starting hand rankings and how they change in comparison in relation to where you're sitting (called position). You'll be dealt two cards face down. A round of betting will occur. After that concludes, you'll see three cards dealt out, called the flop, everyone can use these cards. Another round of betting will occur and a fourth card will be dealt, also called the turn. Another round of betting and then the final card is deal, the river. You guessed it another round of betting, and then the cards are shown face up. Everyone will be using their two hole cards and the five community cards to make their best five card hand.

After you familiarize yourself with the basics, you'll want to start learning about outs, pot odds, bet sizing and hand ranges.

Once you learn that, you'll be better off than 75% of players.

Shoot, I lied, I knew all of that. Ive played before a few times and have watched it before. I guess I just have to learn what trumps what, when to fold, and how to read people.

Do you bet sports as well?
