I honestly expected Sexton to have a huge 2nd year, but with Garland it becomes quite dicey.

To me, Sexton's 2nd year is of much greater importance than Garland's rookie season. For that reason, I believe we need to put the ball in Sexton's hands even if the end goal is to have it in Garland's hands more. I don't believe it is wise to take Sexton's freedom this season if we want to maximize his 2nd year growth. Although there are downsides to it if it's not in our future plan to have him as a lead guard.

I believe in Garland's talent, but no matter how you slice it, its going to be difficult and we need to be extra careful to not damage their growth and Sexton's in particular.

I actually think Garlands presence and ability to also handle the ball and hopefully create Collin quality looks while taking pressure off of him could end up being huge positives for Collin. Offensively at least.

I am coming around on it, but yeah I totally get it. Feels bad taking a pg after Collin finished the year looking so good. The other bad thing is that pg is the strongest position in next year's draft and there are some big pg's that would fit nicely with Sexton. Do we take BPA next year if they are a pg? Seems like that reasoning starts to break down on 3 years in a row, but not 2.

I'd love for this to shake out organically, or just have Garland and Sexton to have some chemistry and we just say FU to defense for a couple of years.
I think sexton will see this as a challenge. People should not assume garland will be better than sexton. We have barely seen garland play
We saw sexton improve over a 82 game nba season

I have to look at it as I used to. This may work out..it's a guard driven league, but the 3/4 positions are just as critical. The 5 spot as we know is different then it used to be.
I do not pretend to know whats in the draft next year so I can't comment yet.
Koby needs to be smart and build out, meaning get some talent, but that talent needs to have defense in there also.
At this point the Cavs need some explosive offensive talent or they'll look like their summer league squad a lot and get blown out a ton.

Expectations should be high for Garland in the long run, but I think people are expecting too much of him right away. Considering that he barely played in college, he'll be the least experienced starter in the NBA this year, and among the least experienced starters in modern NBA history. That lack of experience, combined with his youth and the fact that he's coming off a serious knee injury, will make this a seriously difficult adjustment for him even if he is as talented as the Cavs hope he is.

I would expect him to be healthy(if he doesn't get overused and have a setback) next season.
Usually it's the second year when players with knee injuries really feel like themselves.
Clay Thompson will find that out also.

Handling the ball less also should help with decision making. Because you are forced to make more out of the fewer touches that you are getting. And the less you touch the ball, naturally the less you should turn it over as well. So I hope to see his efficiency rise a lot.

Seems like Beilein really hammers home which decisions you should make in his system. That will be very good for Collin. I think he is going to have a monster year.

I am totally bummed Garland isn't playing. Summer league is where i usually start to feel better about Draft picks. Even when Dion was fat, he still had a lightning quick first step and that was exciting.

I think the offensive talent on the team is looking pretty good. We need one more big time scorer, and for all we know Collin may average 20 this year. He did after allstar. Windler looks like a ready made shooter and Garland is also supposed to be that.

What can Henson do defensively? How has Cedi improved his strength? Can Zizic take a step as a rim protector? He was better than advertised keeping guards out of the paint last year and was very good using the rule of verticality. I like his potential there more than most because his arms are so long.

Beileins(Bickerstaffs) defense looks much simpler than Longabardis. I think the guys will be more successful on that end just from the fact that Bickerstaff is known to get guys to defend that aren't great individual defenders. I can't think of anyone that thrived and outperformed themselves for Longabardi.

It was also in summer league that I noticed that Dion's favorite expression is "Aye and 1!":chuckle:

Lol it was amazing because he was such a bad finisher. "you got the foul, but you need to actually make the basket to get the And 1 young man"
I think he was trying to will the ball to go in by shouting aye and 1

To be devil's advocate, if you have reservations about a player, it's almost better for them to sit out.

It's nuclear holocaust on your confidence, as a fan, if a guy you were luke warm on drafting just sucks ass against these terrible G-League players.

I thought it would only be useful to see Garland if Collin were out there as well.....just for Beilein to get some games reps working on how his guard tandem will play off of one another. If the plan is to sit one of them, it just doesn't make any sense to play the other.....at least to me. Just wait until training camp.

Yeah a good case in point was Hawks fans last year skeptical of the Doncic trade watching Trae Young's summer blunders. It's funny now; it was not then.

C'mon man. It is hard enough as is to be a summer league adherent.

:celb (2):

Right here! I'm of the firm belief that Garland will be better than Sexton straight out the gate. Well, maybe Sexton might be better the first 1... maybe 3 games or so.
