JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Magic stretched Timofey Mozgov and waived him. I thought Magic were a good team to flip JR too. Wonder if we really just handed JR and extra 500k for the sake of giving him 500k.

The Cavs knew that there would be a bunch of trades and free agent moves shortly after the June 30 deadline and the JR contract provided the potential to be part of one of them. It looks more and more like they will just end up waiving him but I can see the logic of wanting to stay in play a bit longer just to see what happens.

The Cavs blew it by not trading JR either during the draft or in the days preceding free agency. His contract just doesn’t have much value anymore. They overplayed their hand, when in reality, there were teams with cap space and/or trade exceptions that could make the same or better deals, with the teams looking to clear salary. I can guarantee you Sam Presti would’ve gotten something of value for JR Smith’s contract

Yep, I got a bit nervous about this when there were headlines heading into free agency about how like over half of the NBA was about to become free agents. That means not that many teams were in total salary binds.

Most rumors leading up to the draft had the Cavaliers acquiring a pick in the 15 to 20 range for JRs contract. We got the 30th pick with the player they were targeting all along for 4 2nds 1 of which will never convey and cash. If we don't find a trade and just waive him how did we lose? We got out of the Lux Tax for the upcoming season. If the asset he can bring in doesn't outweigh getting out of tax why make a move just to make a move?

If they are really high with Porter, it maybe just more prudent to pay 5M plus the 2nds, rather than getting a longer contract and paying luxury tax... At the end of the day, they probably just could not find a deal where they feel it is worthed to pay the luxury tax plus the longer guaranteed money...

We don’t know where Porter was ranked on the Cavs draft board. By your reasoning, the Cavs are out 3 second round picks by doing the deal the way they did.

Yeah who cares about 3 second round picks?

Just because the Cavs have whiffed on the second round picks for the last 10+ years doesn't mean they are not valuable.

In hindsight, very disappointed how the draft night trade went down in 2012. Cavs could have had drafted Draymond Green and Khris Middleton instead of Tyler Zeller.

I never said 2nds don't have value. But they can be bought every year. If you can acquire a pick and draft someone you want and the cost is 4 2nds (Only 3 will convey) and cash you do it.

That’s right. Every year there are some bargains found in the second round of the draft.

You don't want to have to buy second round picks. If you aquire them though trades , make the most out of them.

Which is what the Cavaliers did when they went and traded the 2nd rounders they acquired to get Kevin Porter Jr. Right after acquiring the picks from us the Pistons flipped 2 of them + their own 2nd to trade up in the 2nd round for some European dude. They are easy to acquire before the draft or during the draft. Teams are always willing to sell them.

Teams are always willing to sell them.

Teams with too many rookies, a lot of players under contract, or cheap owners that need a buck are willing to sell, but not all teams sell. Smart teams don't sell them. They will draft & stash or find the gems.

It's been said that if the Cavs were to trade into the late lottery on draft night, their 2 targets were Langford and Porter Jr. Cavs weren't able to successfully find a trade partner before Boston's pick (and Boston took Langford).

We acquired Porter Jr. for 3 second picks and 5 million (that we were going to lose anyway as the league switched from 2018-19 to 2019-20 finances shortly after the draft). If I recall correctly, the 3 second round picks included a top-55 protected pick (AKA - who cares?), and at least 1 of the other 2 picks (if not both) were from teams that will likely finish in the playoffs (i.e., they'll end up in the 45-60 range).

I'd much rather give up what we gave up for Porter Jr. (likely 2 mid-2nd round picks at best), rather than use JR's non-guaranteed contract to take on an ugly contract (that would cost us in both salary and likely luxury tax).
