Not sure if there are other tennis fans in here, I wont say the outcome incase some one has it recorded, but Federer vs Nadal #40 was pure tennis porn.

The 2 greatest going head to head. Its like if we got to see Lebron vs Jordan in the playoffs.

The Djokovic vs Federer might have been better. That 5th set was pretty amazing.

For a long time I was waiting for the era of Nadal and Federer to end. I like when the field is wide open and players come on at the right moment to have amazing runs. Djokovic at least adds another player to the top level. The short period where Andy Murray was playing real well a couple years ago made it alot more interesting.

I'm always hoping for the next crop of players to level up and take down Federer and Nadal. Truly I think this era has lasted longer than anyone expected.

Novak might be the best of all time before his career is done. This is number 16 with plenty of time of being number one to pull that into the 20s

Epic tennis. You knew it'd be a good match and it far exceeded that. Tennis is a great game and those two proved it.

This anger surpasses the aftermath of the Rajai homerun for me. Roger about to hit age 38, had 2 match points on his serve against prime Djokovic. Fuck. Me.
Could not watch anything post-match. I will say you have to applaud both guys for just the relentless effort, and I don't know how they don't collapse at any point. Roger's shots (including his serve) more so than Novak's were really breaking down and losing pace at the end. Understandable. Still, this was the one. Roger has had some heartbreakers, but this is off the charts...

The young "stars" of tennis still show no sign of being able to make a deep run and actually win a major. Yes, there are guys (Thiem, Dmitrov, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Kyrgios, Coric) that can beat the big 3 in a single match (for sure in a 3-set match, less likely in a 5-set match), but to beat more than 1 of the big 3 in 5-set matches in the same tournament? No. They don't yet have the physical and mental endurance. I'm hoping Stan could make a run at the US Open. I love him. He beats Novak/Rafa but loses to Roger. :)

The Aus Open will be interesting, 0 corona cases in the city for 35+ days and the players are going to have to abide by strict quarantine rules. Will it favour the younger or older players?
Likely no warm up tournaments I think.
A few players like Djokovic broke rules in NY for the US open + didnt stay in Hotels but they won't be allowed to for the Aus open and would face major backlash given how much effort has gone into getting rid of the virus

Fascinating to see if Djokovic can pull off the slam. He is just so good. He got so locked in after dropping the first set last night. It was painful to watch the Italian kid just get ground down. Now there is a lot of pressure for Novak. He’s clearly the favorite but has two tough matches ahead. I’m hoping he pulls it off.

I am beginning to really like Novak's game. Agassi had the best return game ever till Novak came along. His ground strokes are amazing and since Novak has worked on his serve to become respectable a few years ago, i think he has a chance at 30 slams. Yeah i said it, but he just turned 34, Roger is still a threat at 40, but will be gone soon, so will Nadal with his injury history after he wins a few more French opens.

If Novak wins this year, then 2 more a year for the next 4 years, 30 isnt out of the question. Who is out there to sop Djokovic except Nadal on clay?

30? Ok 25 I can see but I guess anything is possible with this guy. Fridays Olympics rematch has me hyped. Though I imagine Nole in 4. It is hard to see any NextGen as a real threat.

Who do you have as the GOAT?

My heart has Roger as the GOAT and my head has Novak as the GOAT if that makes sense. How about you??

First, let me say it’s nice to find another tennis fan.

So I started to casually follow tennis about 10 years ago since I had two friends who were huge Roger stans. And once Novak started to have some success against him and Rafa I became a Nole fan more for the spoiler aspect. And I say that so you know my bias as a Nole fan. But, as the chase to 20 kept going I really began to appreciate all three. I think you can make a case for all three at some level. But I’m still a casual fan in many ways so I can’t analyze their games like a tennis pro. But my casual goat thoughts are:

Rafa - Obvious clay GOAT, but that hurts him in the overall GOAT conversation as 13 of his slams are on clay and he only has one AO. I think he took fitness to a new level and was the precursor to Novak’s grinding style. Verdict: Best Clay player of all time. Third best overall player.

Roger - Ok so the real conversation is between Roger and Novak. I think Roger is the greatest tennis player of all time as far as skill and pure beautiful tennis. He really is a magician with the racquet. And his longevity is truly amazing. Now…I didn’t watch his early years so I just see them on paper and…the competition was rather weak. Is he the best grass player ever? Probabky. But I know he only has one French so that’s a ding for me.

Novak - His resume is hard to argue against. And his game isn’t as easy to love as he is honestly just a wall and sends everything back until you make an error. He is the mental GOAT for sure. The match points he has saved are incredible. And he has two career slams and a winning H2H against the others and the most weeks at #1. And if he wins the calendar slam…I think he is the GOAT. I do want to point out that his 9 AOs are arguably the weakest and least prestigious of the slams. So that’s a small ding.

If Nole doesn’t win this weekend, I’ll listen to a solid Roger argument and at least entertain an outside Rafa argument. But really I think it’s fair to say that these are the three best male tennis players ever and each has an argument to greatest. Though I think Novak is the only one with the chance to break the three way Tie and claim it outright. And I wanted him to until he got to 20. Now I feel like I can respect the other two more.

The issue is Roger is 40 and done possibly winning anymore Grand Slams. I loved his game, and once he passed Sampras, he was the GOAT. I agree with Rafa, the fact 13 come on clay, just doesnt sit well for me.

Now I was a HUGE Agassi fan back in the day, so I hated Pete, but the more I watch Novak, the more I see him as a better version of Agassi. Those ground strokes and return of serves are amazing. And like Agassi his server sucked, but 3 or 4 years ago, Novak worked on his serve and its respectful now.

One other thing that Roger always had was fitness, lasting the 5 round games in the majors....but Novak is probably more fit, i know crazy, and his mental game is just so fucking strong.

I want to say Roger, but its really not. Novak will be the GOAT very soon if he isnt already. he is a good guy and does great things outside of tennis like Roger, so no problem with him taking the legacy.

Yeah I hear you. Take away the steroids and it’s sort of like how McGwire and Sosa was this awesome, magical and lovable story…and the Bonds just came over the top and crushed them both. That’s how it feels with Roger and Rafa and then Djoker is just taking down all the records before we even had a chance to reflect on those two.

I do like Novak though and wish he was liked more by the fans. Obviously the Wimbledon crowd is way too snooty to like an Eastern European. But I don’t know why the US crowd doesn’t like him.

But yeah, I think I’ll still have Roger the GOAT until Novak gets to 21. I like the chase so not ready to give that up yet. Talk to me on Monday though!

Americans like Roger, thus Novak is the enemy, its as simple as that.
