JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I fully expect the Cavs to waive JR on it before the 7/15 deadline. He should write them a big thank you for the extra $500k he pocketed, to extend the deadline for two weeks. Must be nice to get that kind of dough for doing absolutely nothing...

While he's at it, he should also thank LeBron for the 4-year, $57M contract that magically appeared under his pen in '16.

Not that big of a deal. If they were going to move him, it was after the elite players were moved.

We’d have gotten a 1st for taking Iggy and then probably another 1st at the deadline for flipping him.

It wasn't never going to happen though because the warriors are hard capped and couldn't even take on the stretched guaranteed amount of JRs contract. They have ~270k before hitting the apron right now. They basically would have to renegotiate Klay, Russell, or Looney's contract if they hadn't sign them yet.

It’s a little frustrating we weren’t able to get any asset for JR’s contract, but I don’t think it’s from a lack of effort from the Cavs front office.

Of all the major players moving around and huge contracts all over the league, it is a little baffling that the Cavs weren’t able to move him and save someone millions of dollars.

I think the front office miscalculated the available caps space that teams were willing to take on a bad contract with. I think JRs contract value actually peaked at the trade deadline. It would be interesting to know what offers they turned down.

Really it was a piece for a contending team over the cap to take on more salary. They needed it at the deadline so they could turn an expiring or a 2 year contract into a more attractive trade piece. Someone like Houston could have used it to take on Crabbe or Bazemore.

The Cavs miscalculated the value of JR’s contract, as other teams had cap room and/or trade exceptions and, thus, the ability to absorb 100% of a contract. JR’s partially guaranteed contract meant the team would have to take back some salary, which made it less attractive, by comparison. I think the value of his deal peaked at the draft and, once draft night passed, it went down from there.

I also think the Cavs shot themselves in the foot by demanding more than other teams were willing to pay and then holding onto the contract, thinking better offers would come. Ironically, I think we’re seeing pretty much the same thing happen now with Kevin Love.

Do we even know any of the deals the Cavs actually passed up at the draft? I know someone said that the Cavs passed up on Crabbe and the Nets 2019 pick at the trade deadline.

I thought Koby did a good job last season of trading guys when deals came along. I think a deal will come along for Love. No one was sure what value JR's contract actually held which made it tricky to trade, the luxury tax implications didn't help.

I wouldn't hold it against Koby if he waives and stretches JR's contract at this point. We have alot of expirings and his job is to get max value from those now.

I would absolutely hold it against him if he stretches jr.

I hate stretching players but it keeps the Cavs under the luxury tax and its like 1.5 million a year. It give Koby the chance to get better value from the expiring contracts on the roster so he doesn't have to seek out trades that take less money.

We don’t know the offers that were on the table and likely won't ever know. Koby brought this criticism upon himself, at the end of the year press conference, when he brought up how the contract was so unique, it held special value, and they were already getting trade calls about it. After that, to then fail to move it, can only be classified as a disappointment. If he truly had no intention of moving it then he never should’ve said any of this publicly.

I agree it's a disappointment. I bought into the hype after the trade deadline but I thought we should have used it at the trade deadline. I never thought it was going to yield a top 10 pick. #17 and Allen Crabbe was good value because Crabbe will be a player that can be flipped at the deadline.

I bought into Altman’s hype as well. Getting the first round pick from Houston probably caused them to re-think the Brooklyn deal, if it was really on the table, that is.
