Browns Official 53 Man Roster, Future Draft Picks

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
landry's career catch rate is 67% on 720 targets

Higgins has a 62% catch rate on 115 targets.

If landry catches at his average rate last year he puts up 100+ receptions, and 1250+ yards and we arent even discussing this, so lets see how he bounces back
Landry has a career ypc of 10.4 and ypt of 7. If he had a “normal” year last year given his number of targets, he wasn’t getting anywhere close to 1250+.

Higgins on 150 targets would get about 1200 yards at his normal rate.

Oh yay, time to trot out yards per catch and yards per target as if they have anything to do with a WR's ability level.

Can't wait to see first ballot hall of famer Desean Jackson this year! I still can't believe we let Travis Benjamin slip away. He's a certain all-pro with his 9+ yards per target in back-to-back seasons!

This stuff gets even better when you extrapolate it. It's absolute nonsense.

Perhaps and I'm just throwing this out there, maybe there is a reason Higgins didn't get 150 targets.

On 149 targets. Meager 54% catch rate.

Comparatively to Higgins 74%, Higgins younger and cheaper deal, and potential at multiple levels of the field, I’m inclined to believe the arrow is trending in the right direction.

Role is so important. Landry might have been miscast as a #1 receiver because he isn't an explosive athlete. As a #2 he is very high end. On the flip side Higgins was the third or fourth option and worked against the third or fourth cornerback of the opponent. He was great in a mismatch situation, but would he have the same success against a #2 corner? How about the #1 corner Landry faced all last season? I expect Landry to cement his role with the team this year.

Missing four weeks with injury and subsequently having to recover from that would likely answer your question.

There’s a reason they turned to him so much more down the stretch when finally healthy.

It was that efficiency which leads many to believe there is greater opportunity for him to surpass Landry, whom has largely been inefficient.

Landry was playing largely out of the slot, and not matched up against top corners.

Higgins was, as he was largely utilized outside or on the boundary.

I think Higgins stats are a little inflated. Higgins numbers wouldn’t look near as well if he wasn’t lining up against #2 and #3 corners. I’d be very interested to see those numbers if they are available.

We still are the 'Cleveland' Browns. I'm still shocked a premier unbelievable superstar athlete landed on our home team and representing our city with the recruitment of his best friend. I cannot see Dorsey trading the best friend and making Odell feel disgruntled. It doesn't matter how good Rashard is, at worst I can see Landry chopping some salary and keeping things together. Higgins is likely gone.

Landry's role changed dramatically when Todd Haley was let go and Kitchens began calling plays. With Haley, Landry was utilized as an outside receiver as well as a slot receiver. During that time, Landry had a poor ratio of targets to receptions. When Freddie took over, Landry shifted to a full time slot receiver. That should absolutely be reflected in the stats you cited.

Maybe he shouldn’t get that many targets. But Landry definitely shouldn’t either.

Its worth mentioning that the CBA will expire after next season. I would expect the players share of revenue to jump pretty high considering it has risen 50% since this CBA was negotiated. If we can lock in Baker, Chubb, Myles & Demarious to extensions before the cap spike; the cap hits of Landry, Bitonio & OBJ will be much smaller than they are now.

A lot of people are assuming we have a 3-5 year window because of Baker's contract and the talent we were able to put together in year 2. That window could open up significantly if we lock in those guys under this current CBA.

I don’t see why we should ignore a stat that suggests his efficiency is mediocre over the course of his career.

I'm still in the restructure Landry & keep Higgins camp.

Is Higgins a "must keep"? Probably not.

However, I do think some are really underestimating how much it means to have a non-#1 WR that a QB trusts & has an obvious connection with.

Keep & restructure Landry, have him keep eating in the slot. Keep Higgins & have him keep eating in that role.

I'm not advocating overpaying Higgins, but I'd do what I could, within reason, to keep him.

Baker, Chubb and Myles won’t have their extensions kick in until after the new CBA takes affect. They’re obviously not going to sign an extension now.

Only guys we can really do that for are the guys who are FAs this offseason.

It's pretty obvious that Landry's contract was structured to be easy to move off of after this coming season. When he signed it, it had to be easy to see that he was either moving-on after this season or restructuring. For some reason, his contract is the only case where folks refer to total potential value instead of guaranteed money. And for as much as I like Higgins, he is not the better receiver. He's not even ahead of Landry on the depth chart. That whole agenda is tired and has been beat to a bloody pulp by the same people over and over again.

Because, in this sport, what you define as "efficiency" is next to worthless. Efficiency is trying to measure the amount of output given similar input. The input a short-yardage slot receiver like Landry (or Edelman, Golden Tate, etc) is not the same as an ancillary weapon who runs deeper routes. Landry's job isn't to gain inside leverage on a corner 30 yards downfield on a post route. It's to use his ability to consistently get open underneath in man coverage, or to find the soft spot in a zone coverage.

I don't know if it's the (trashy) fantasy football pundits talking about volume over talent, or if it's our desire to apply the advanced metrics that fit baseball and basketball to football. Either way, disregarding a player's talents is foolish. If you want to criticize Landry for his unusually bad season in terms of drops last year? Go for it--they were inexcusable and I'd bet on them not re-occurring. But, if you want to take a guy whose talent is getting open in small windows, and then criticize him because his targets aren't further downfield, or his YAC isn't as high as someone who catches the ball with more space to operate? That's as foolish as criticizing a fish for not being able to climb a tree.

Getting open is a talent. You don't average 150 targets a season if you can't get open. Landry beating a man underneath will either be death by a thousand cuts, or it will force the defense to adjust, which then opens up other things like the running game or a downfield threat (or even Landry himself going downfield after a corner jumps a double move).
